"We’re here."
"What is this place?" Chen Chaoyang asked, cradling Nannan, whose face was covered in blood-filled blisters.
Looking around, he was puzzled. He had a feeling that he had been here before, but he couldn’t quite place it.
"This is Yan Zhaofeng’s office. It’s actually a door that can be opened. Inside is a secret room, originally used by Yan Zhaofeng for... well, you know..."
When it ca to the purpose of the secret room, the researcher held hostage by Chen Chaoyang and his partner wore an awkward expression. Clearly, Yan Zhaofeng used it for so unspeakable affairs.
"Oh, I see~"
Chen Chaoyang seed to understand. Nannan was burning up. Her rapid, shallow breaths and the blisters filling her face suggested that she had been injected with the evolutionary drug and her chances of survival seed slim.
The fate of Nannan was irrelevant to him. All he wanted to do now was get back to Qinshan Base.
"Uhm... are you letting go?"
"Of course! Wait, no way!"
Chen Chaoyang grinned as he chased after the researcher. However, Li Xiaoyan, standing nearby, raised her rifle and shot him in the head.
Bang!
The researcher fell to the ground, a bloody hole in his forehead from which a bright red stream of blood flowed.
"Let’s go."
With that, Chen Chaoyang opened the door and walked out into what was indeed a secret room, decorated in the sa style as Yan Zhaofeng’s office. A short, ten-ter corridor led to a door.
After opening it, they saw another door, behind which neatly arranged clothes t their eyes.
It was a wardrobe, used by Yan Zhaofeng as a disguise.
As soon as they left the wardrobe, they heard a piercing alarm from outside, imdiately confusing them.
"They’ve triggered the alarm."
"Did the boss expose his cover and escape?"
"Maybe."
Hearing the chaotic footsteps outside, they felt a touch of fear and decided to stay here temporarily.
anwhile, elsewhere.
Wen Yiyan’s group rushed up to the bell tower. Spotting the soldiers on guard, she imdiately asked one of them, "Where’s the zombie? Did it escape?"
"Yes, we have sent people after it!" the soldier confird, nodding.
Disappointed by the soldier’s answer, Wen Yiyan cursed inwardly, "What a bunch of useless idiots!"
There was no hope of catching Tang Ye now. She rembered that Yan Zhaofeng had conducted an experint on an insubordinate New Human. Now, she was only concerned about the subject of that experint.
She carefully inspected the experintal chamber, but failed to find anything. She guessed that Yan Zhaofeng hadn’t carried out the experint in the basent.
"Do any of you know where the experintal subject is?"
To find out where the experint subject was, she had to ask the researchers. But since they had been killed by Tang Ye and turned into zombies, there was no one to answer her query. So instead, she asked the local soldiers of Yindan Base.
The soldiers exchanged glances but remained silent. The clinical trial of a new evolutionary drug was a classified matter - it wasn’t information that anyone could obtain, even if they wanted to.
Amidst the silent crowd, a sergeant who knew a bit more than the others bravely stepped forward and said, "Ma’am, presumably... presumably the subject has escaped."
"Escaped? Explain."
Wen Yiyan’s eyes twinkled as she stared at the sergeant, which made him nervous. He knew a bit about the experint subject, which was an infant girl. Even though the girl was a New Human, an experint on a child not even two years old was inhumane.
Knowing the truth, Yan Zhaofeng had lied to Wen Yiyan, telling her the experintal subject was an adult.
Now, hearing the sergeant say the experint subject had escaped, Wen Yiyan felt thrilled, for the mont forgetting about the zombie Tang Ye. Compared to the detestable zombie, the potential for a mass-produced Level 2 New Human brought about by the improved evolutionary drug was far more worthy of attention.
If the experintal subject could escape, it implied the drug hadn’t hard her and might have even altered her!
However, she couldn’t help but wonder, where had the subject run to? Where did she start running from? How did this sergeant know? The experint was supposed to be classified!
The sergeant didn’t know how to respond, regretting stepping forward to answer the question. This was like asking for trouble.
With Yan Zhaofeng dead, the control of Yindan Base would change hands. The new leader was likely to be Wen Yiyan. If she were to assu control, people would scramble to curry favour with her and try to make themselves visible to her, with the hope of securing a position and thus gaining abundant resources.
The sergeant had had all these thoughts in his mind and carelessly put himself in the spotlight. But when it was his ti to speak, he choked, not able to utter a word.
All he knew was who the experintal subject was. Who knew whether the experint was successful, or whether the drug had had the desired effect?
Under Wen Yiyan’s penetrating gaze, the sergeant swallowed his panic and tried to seem calm. "The new batch of the evolutionary drug has been completed. It’s much more effective than the first one. The chances that the drug was absorbed by the subject after injection are high..."
"Stop, stop, stop! You don’t need to tell all this. If she escaped, where was the experint conducted? Why wasn’t I inford?"
Wen Yiyan was not interested in the sergeant’s speculation - she already knew all of that. His words were nothing but a waste of ti.
Interrupted by her, the sergeant felt a bit annoyed but didn’t dare show it. He was also worried - if even Wen Yiyan didn’t know where the experint was conducted, how could he, a minor officer, know? The experint should have been carried out in the bell tower’s basent. Where else could it have taken place?
He had been down there, and there was no sign of the baby girl. Had she been eaten by the zombies? This explanation seed plausible, but he had just said that the subject had escaped. How could he explain this contradiction?
After so pondering, he decided to make sothing up to tide over this predicant. Why did he even talk himself into this situation?
"The basent?"
"Downstairs?"
"Maybe she escaped in the chaos when the zombies broke in."
"Go on," commanded Wen Yiyan, gently tucking her hair behind her ears. Her beauty was captivating, but no one noticed. Her hand, pale as porcelain, slipped towards the pistol on her waist.
"Furthermore, the experintal subject is from Tang Ye’s camp. He’s notorious for his insolence towards Mayor Yan. Now that he’s fled, it’s highly likely that he’ll return to Tang Ye. If we find Tang Ye, we’ll definitely find him!"
Utterly relieved, the sergeant felt sure he’d deflected any bla towards Tang Ye.
However, a gunshot suddenly rang out. His chest was pierced by a bullet, and he staggered and fell to the ground.
"What, do you think I have no common sense?"
