"What did headquarters say?"
After the First Team officer ended the communication, Bai Liang and another officer quickly gathered around. The First Team officer shook his head, "I don’t know their stance either. Hopefully, it’s not what we’re fearing."
"When are the people from Shen Dong arriving? Did headquarters ntion that?"
"Yeah, they did. Seems like they’ll arrive in two hours."
"Two hours? Ma De, the zombie horde is already here! We’ve thrown so many zombie attractants along the way. How the hell are we supposed to fight?"
"Headquarters said we just need to hold on for a little while."
"Sure, they’ve told before that we’re just here for show. We’re only supposed to hold the line for a bit. Those big guys upstairs surely won’t let us lose too quickly. After all, we’re Linhan soldiers, gotta make sure we don’t embarrass Linhan."
"You still trust headquarters? What if..."
"What else can we do? Should we just take our n and leave right now?"
The three officers fell into a silence, as if conformity was their only choice. This was rely a guess—they couldn’t even confirm whether their suspicions were true. To take such a big risk and flee based on a hypothesis would be utterly absurd.
"Let’s hold out for a while and see. If it becos impossible, we’ll pull back. Damn it, this is giving such a headache!" Bai Liang remained as irritable as ever, cursing loudly. However, everyone knew once the fight started, there would be no turning back. While the zombie horde itself wasn’t an overwhelming threat, the high-level zombies within it were plenty. Retreating halfway if things go south? Practically impossible.
Still, Bai Liang wasn’t wrong—this stuff sure was maddening. And there was no margin for error either. After Bai Liang walked away, the other two exchanged glances and shook their heads. All they could do was hope the events unfolding wouldn’t be too catastrophic.
"Everyone, gather up!"
Bai Liang climbed onto the tallest platform, using his booming voice to bark orders at the soldiers below.
Upon hearing him, the soldiers quickly halted their idle chatter. All sounds ceased instantly as they hurried to assemble, forming three phalanxes.
When Bai Liang finished speaking, another officer climbed onto the platform and cleared his throat. "First Team brothers, go to the lifting platform on the right. Break into six batches and gather by the defensive corpse walls. Second Team, head to the middle lifting platform. Third Team, go to the one on the far left."
"At ease! Attention!"
"You’ve got five minutes. If you’re not up there in five minutes, don’t bla for being harsh!"
"Dismissed!"
As Bai Liang’s dismissal echoed, the freshly ford phalanxes scattered instantly, each group running toward its designated lifting platform. Ghost Head and a few others exchanged glances before nodding.
"Let’s move."
Brother Shi spoke briefly, leading his group toward an old Level 3 New Human soldier. Yong seed slow to react, but luckily Snapper tugged at his sleeve to snap him out of it.
"Hey, wait! Hey, wait a mont, big brother!"
Brother Shi’s shout made the Level 3 New Human glance around before finally zeroing in on their group. He confird they were addressing him.
"You calling ?" That old soldier asked.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah," Brother Shi nodded hurriedly.
"What’s up?"
"We just want a little convenience, uh... You know what I an."
"And why are you asking that?"
"Should we just go outright? Our regint head said we need to be up there within five minutes. If sothing happens... who do we report to?"
"Just go report directly to your regint head."
"Alright, thanks, thanks,"
Brother Shi quickly expressed his gratitude, but the old soldier didn’t respond, simply turned away and left.
"We’ll go talk to Bai Liang." After the soldier walked off, Brother Shi’s smile vanished, prompting Crooked Neck to nervously ask, "What if Bai Liang doesn’t let us go?"
"We’ll wing it then. Worst-case scenario, once we’re up there, we’ll play a quick ga of rock-paper-scissors. Loser has to drop one in their pants and see who can stomach the sll."
"Alright, sounds like a plan."
Their expressions turned sowhat peculiar—of course, except Yong, whose face rarely showed much emotion. Though let’s be honest, who wouldn’t feel humiliated doing sothing like this?
They took a mont to prepare themselves emotionally before setting off to Bai Liang’s position, sporting expressions as sour as if they’d swallowed flies. Brother Shi noticed Yong maintaining his serene deanor and couldn’t resist giving him a reminder.
"Hey, bro, try acting a bit! It’s fine if you can’t get out, but don’t ss things up for the rest of us."
Upon hearing this, Yong froze for a mont, then nodded blankly. He imitated their postures—one hand clutching his stomach, slightly bending forward. This startled Brother Shi for a brief mont; Yong seed to have sothing off about him, which made his movents appear stiff and even a bit twisted. Oddly enough, this awkward and distorted imitation of Brother Shi’s actions made it visually frustrating to watch.
"Perfect!"
Brother Shi praised Yong, slinging "Tianguang" over his back, and jogged ahead with the group toward Bai Liang.
Bai Liang soon noticed the group heading his way. Naturally, he knew who they were.
"What’s your deal?" He asked as they approached.
Brother Shi and his companions "painfully" arrived in front of Bai Liang, twisted faces staring at him. They spoke "weakly," "Regint Head, we want to go... relieve ourselves real quick."
"You need to relieve yourselves? Do it right here." Bai Liang cut them off before Brother Shi could finish speaking.
"But... we need to go for a big one."
"Hmm?" Bai Liang’s eyes landed squarely on Brother Shi, making his guts churn.
"All six of you have stomachaches at the sa ti?"
"Yeah, we ate so bad food on the way over."
"So you all know each other?"
"Yes."
"Then what did you eat?" Bai Liang kept his gaze fixed on Brother Shi. The group found it nearly impossible to exchange glances. Fortunately, Brother Shi thought quickly and answered, "We rummaged so leftovers—things people hadn’t finished eating, like flatbread or sothing. We don’t even know the nas of them."
"Must’ve been that stuff. No wonder the taste was weird when we ate it," Brother Shi concluded, prompting Ghost Head to imdiately latch onto his story and continue the explanation.
"Regint Head, can we go? I really can’t hold it anymore!" Brother Shi pleaded, looking sincerely desperate.
Bai Liang’s eyes flickered. Nobody could tell what he was thinking. After a mont, he replied, "Do it right here. No one’s watching you."
"But..."
"I said, deal with it here. You didn’t understand ?"
"It’s just... a little embarrassing."
"You’re all grown n—embarrassed for what? Afraid soone will poke your asshole? Trust , I’m standing guard here; nobody will watch you. Hurry. I’ll give you an extra two minutes. Seriously, can you people stop whining?"
Bai Liang was ruthless, offering no leeway. At this point, the group had lost all hope. They nearly forgot this guy wasn’t one for compromise.
Were they really going to do it here, in front of everyone? How humiliating would that be?
