Adam shut the side door behind him as he walked back inside the house. Long shadows were cast down the hallway by the gray light of dawn that filtered through the windows.

He discovered Sophia, a statue carved out of fear, still standing there. When he got close, she turned.

"What did you do?" she asked. Her voice was barely a whisper a fragile thread of sound. "With the bodies... what did you do?"

"You don’t need to know" Adam replied his voice low and steady. He did not want to give her any visual information. She did not need to think about a shallow grave.

Unable to look him in the eyes, Sophia placed her gaze to the ground. In a tiny defensive gesture, she put her arms around herself. He could see the self-bla and guilt she was carrying written all over her face. He was aware that she continued to bla her bullies for the morning’s assault.

He took a step toward her. He touched her shoulders tenderly. Unspoken fear made her body tense and sluggish

"Whatever you’re thinking it’s wrong" he said softly. "These n weren’t connected to the people who were bothering you. They have nothing to do with them."

His words were a silent confession. He was attempting to relieve her out of her guilt. Sophia’s head leaned upward. Her eyes were wide with a mix of confusion and a sense of hope as she gazed at him.

"But... how do you know that?" she asked.

Adam sighed long and quietly. It was the sound of a man with too many secrets and a lot of lives under his belt. He had to tell her the truth. It was the only way to break the ntal glue she had ford.

"Because they were after " he admitted. "I was their main target. That’s why I didn’t want to co here with you last night."

Sophia felt the truth strike her like a physical blow. She lost all ntal clarity. Her complex web of self-bla and guilt ca undone. She was not at fault for this. He owned it. He was the reason why the assassins took the bodies and the blood. Her face was a blank canvas of shock as she gazed at him.

Adam saw her stunned silence. A small humorless smile touched his lips. "I wasn’t expecting that reaction" he said trying to lighten the heavy atmosphere. It didn’t work.

Sophia found her voice again. It was shaky filled with a new kind of fear. A fear for him. "Why were they after you? What did you do?"

The smile vanished from Adam’s face. His expression beca serious once more. He looked her directly in the eye his gaze intense.

"Sophia" He said in a tone that left no room for debate, "I was not clear with you before, but I am going to be clear now." "Thank you for being concerned about . However, I want you to understand sothing. Your life will beco easier the less you ddle in my affairs. Your life and the lives of your entire family could be destroyed if you beco overly involved."

He drew a cruel line in the earth with his words, an obvious warning. He was pushing her away in an attempt to protect her. However, his caution only made Sophia wonder more. Who were these murderous individuals? How could he have created such formidable foes? The mystery about him grew.

Adam saw the storm of questions in her eyes. He smiled again a quick flash of reassurance. "Don’t worry so much" he said. "Our work isn’t done yet."

He passed her on his way to the store where her sister and mother were hiding. To keep them busy for the remainder of the day, he instructed Sophia to visit them. Then he returned to the kitchen. After locating a bucket and so rags, he began the grueso process of cleaning up the blood. He carefully cleaned the walls and the floor to get rid of any signs of the violence that had taken place.

He did not hear Anastasia enter the room because he was too preoccupied with his work. She watched him for a while in the doorway. She observed how he ticulously rearranged the furniture and restored order to the chaotic kitchen.

"I won’t ask who they were" she said finally. Her voice was surprisingly steady for a girl her age. "And I won’t ask any other questions like that. But I do want to know one thing. How did you kill them all?"

Adam halted his activity. He turned to face her. She was rely a young child, standing there looking grave. Her inquiry was so straightforward and free of the fear he had witnessed in her sister and mother.

"Aren’t you a little young for that question?" he asked.

Anastasia didn’t smile. She just kept looking at him her gaze unwavering. "You were just lucky. That’s not an answer."

Adam sighed. "I was just lucky. That’s all there is to it."

He turned back to his work hoping she would drop it. But she didn’t.

"But then how did you know they were coming?" she pressed her voice still serious. "You were upstairs with ."

This ti Adam didn’t stop his work. He completely ignored her question hoping his silence would be a clear enough answer.

But Anastasia was persistent. "Were those assassins only after you?"

He finally stopped when he heard that question. He dropped the rag he was carrying. Slowly, he turned to her. Her inquiry was too insightful and too near the danger reality. He could not simply lie his way out of that question. He simply gazed at the young girl who had witnessed too much.
