Nobody moved.
The floating object remained suspended above the node.
Its faint silver glow rose and fell in a slow rhythm.
Ethan continued watching.
Waiting.
Observing.
The wolves showed no signs of aggression.
The newcors remained calm.
Everything about the clearing suggested that a process had just been completed.
Not a battle.
Not a ritual.
A process.
The distinction mattered.
Several more minutes passed.
Then the object moved.
Not toward Ethan.
Not toward the wolves.
Instead, it slowly drifted back toward the pillar.
The entire clearing imdiately reacted.
Groups that had remained motionless began repositioning.
The wolves stood.
The newcors rose from the ground.
The atmosphere changed.
The process was over.
Activity had resud.
Ethan's eyes sharpened.
This was the first clear answer he had received since arriving.
The gathering itself had a purpose.
The creatures had not assembled here simply to absorb energy.
They had co because the pillar periodically produced sothing.
And participation was required.
The floating object reached the pillar.
The mont it touched the stone surface, silver light flowed across both.
The object slowly sank into the rock.
Then disappeared completely.
The glow faded.
The clearing returned to normal.
The node dissolved.
The projection vanished.
The silver network beneath the soil dimd until only faint traces remained.
Within monts, the strange phenonon that had dominated the clearing was gone.
Only the pillar remained.
Ethan stared.
The answer was surprisingly simple.
The pillar was a resource.
A resource that periodically produced sothing.
The gathered creatures participated in the process.
Then they left.
No hidden gods.
No ancient ssages.
No mysterious inheritance.
Just a natural system of the planet.
A valuable one.
The young wolf that had received recognition earlier moved first.
Several wolves followed behind it.
Not submissively.
Not fearfully.
Naturally.
The difference was subtle.
But Ethan noticed it imdiately.
The wolf's status within the pack had clearly increased.
The pillar had not made it stronger.
It had elevated its position.
The process appeared to influence social hierarchy.
The thought was fascinating.
Resources affected civilizations.
Resources affected developnt.
Resources affected behavior.
The wolves were proving that principle on a smaller scale.
The first group of newcors began departing next.
The second group followed shortly after.
None showed interest in fighting.
None challenged the wolves.
Each group simply left.
As if they had obtained exactly what they ca for.
The clearing rapidly emptied.
Within half an hour, only the wolf pack remained.
And even they were beginning to disperse.
Ethan remained hidden among the trees.
Thinking.
Analyzing.
Learning.
The Fire Sprite was visibly disappointed that no battle had occurred.
The Water Sprite looked relieved.
The Air Sprite carefully tracked the departing groups.
The Earth Sprite's attention never left the pillar.
Ethan noticed that.
He looked down at the small sprite.
The Earth Sprite pointed toward the pillar.
Then toward itself.
Then toward the Origin Sphere.
The aning was obvious.
It wanted the resource.
Unfortunately, so did hundreds of wolves.
"Not today," Ethan muttered.
The Earth Sprite slumped slightly.
The Fire Sprite imdiately looked amused.
The Earth Sprite glared at it.
For several seconds the two sprites silently stared at each other.
Then the Water Sprite stepped between them.
As usual.
Ethan couldn't help smiling.
His civilization felt more alive with every passing day.
The smile faded as he looked back toward the clearing.
The pillar remained.
The wolves remained.
And that created a problem.
Even if the resource was valuable, he lacked the strength to claim it.
At least for now.
Rushing forward would accomplish nothing.
A creator needed patience.
A creator needed planning.
A creator needed growth.
His eyes drifted toward the departing newcors.
That was when another realization struck him.
The creatures had arrived from elsewhere.
Which ant Planet 042 was larger than he had explored.
Much larger.
Until now, most of his attention had been focused on the forest surrounding the entry area.
But the appearance of entirely new species suggested a wider ecosystem.
More resources.
More dangers.
More opportunities.
The thought imdiately interested him.
Perhaps he had been focusing on the wrong objective.
The pillar was important.
But so was understanding the planet itself.
Planet 042 was still uncleared.
Its objective remained unknown.
Its resources remained largely unexplored.
And now he knew other creature populations existed beyond the wolves.
That knowledge alone made the expedition worthwhile.
The Air Sprite suddenly descended from above.
It landed nearby and pointed toward the departing newcors.
Repeatedly.
Ethan raised an eyebrow.
"You want to follow them?"
The sprite imdiately nodded.
Or at least perford the closest thing a sprite could manage to a nod.
Ethan considered it.
The wolves were beginning to disperse.
The pillar was no longer active.
And following a departing group was far less dangerous than approaching the center of a massive wolf pack.
It was a reasonable idea.
The Water Sprite seed to agree.
The Earth Sprite reluctantly tore its attention away from the pillar.
Even the Fire Sprite appeared interested.
Ethan looked toward the distant forest.
Then toward the pillar one last ti.
The mystery had not completely disappeared.
But it no longer controlled his attention.
He understood enough.
The pillar was a valuable planetary resource.
One that influenced local creatures and social structures.
That knowledge alone was useful.
The rest could wait.
For now, exploration offered greater returns.
Ethan rose to his feet.
The sprites imdiately gathered around him.
"Let's see where they're going."
The Air Sprite shot into the sky.
Excitent radiated from its movents.
The Fire Sprite practically bounced in place.
The Water Sprite organized the nearby sprites into formation.
The Earth Sprite grabbed a small piece of iron ore it had been carrying and hurried after the others.
Within minutes, the expedition was moving once more.
Not toward the pillar.
Not toward the wolves.
But deeper into the unknown regions of Planet 042.
And for the first ti since discovering the clearing, Ethan felt like he was finally progressing again.
The planet still held many secrets.
But now he was searching for opportunities instead of answers.
And opportunities were far more valuable.
