Simply said, after receiving the encouragent from his father, Cedric worked very hard to improve himself that is help people whenever, be kind to everyone and just beco a better person while still taking chances with Emily. A few years passed and on a snowy morning, there were two people on a small hill. There was a singular tree on the hill, it was the place where Cedric confessed to Emily for the first ti. Despite that being a mory of his rejection, he learned to face it and it beca the place whenever he confessed to her.

’How many tis has it been’

’Hmm, 51st I think’

The thought went through Cedric’s mind but then ...

"Yes"

His mind went black and silence continued on for minutest till he finally comprehended her words. He looked up to see Emily wearing a beautiful smile. She didn’t smile often and most of the ti had a flat expression and seeing her smile, Cedric was entranced by her beauty. Ti passed and eventually they married. It should have been a happy life. But sothing was missing.

Despite their love, despite the years, they never had children. Not because they haven’t done the deed but because Emily didn’t want one yet. His father passed away as well as his dog, and for a ti, it was just them until one day,

"I need to go"

"How long"

Cedric was stunned and worried but asked calmly. He lived with her long enough to know that she wouldn’t go unless she needed to. Seeing that she didn’t answer Cedric sighed and said with a smile.

"I will be waiting for you"

He knew that there was sothing she didn’t explain such as her past and her background. Though the clothes of her from the first day he saw her made him know that she had so type of a background. He never asked her about it, just waiting for the day she would tell him herself. He also knew that the day she would need to go back would appear sooner or later but he didn’t expect it to be today.

Then she left and Cedric was left waiting. He waited and waited, years passed. Till one day while he was walking around managing the farm he had inherited from his father, he could feel sothing different. He felt as if he could see the illusion of his dog who had passed away barking at him trying to take him to the forest where he t her before disappearing.

"Could it be"

He went to the first place he saw her but didn’t find her. His expectations were broken and sighed as he looked at the sky in response. He forcibly stopped the tears from flowing from his eyes. Throughout the years, many thoughts passed his mind such as whether she was coming back. Is this the end of their story.

Cedric could only feed his mind with good answers and hope of a future that would include her. He returned back to his house and the first thing he could sll was the sll of food. There was no one to cook food for him inside the house at the mont or so he thought. When he went into the kitchen, he finally saw her, Emily.

"You’re back," Cedric whispered, his voice cracking.

She was wearing an apron with a spatula in her hand. She walked to him, lifting a hand to his face. Her fingers were cool against his skin as she gently wiped away the tears he hadn’t realized were falling.

"I’m ho" she said softly.

Cedric swallowed the lump in his throat.

"Welco ho"

A beautiful smile similar to the first ti she smiled at him which was during his confession was present on her face. Cedric hugged her as if not wanting her to leave from his life again. Emily also patted his back.

From that day on, things changed. Emily smiled more. And one day, it was not Cedric who brought up the idea of children, but Emily.

"Do you want children?" she asked one evening.

Cedric looked at her, surprise flickering in his eyes.

"Are you sure"

She chuckled, a rare sound.

"I think I’m ready."

They tried, and it was not easy. Years passed before they finally had a child. And then another. Two children, a boy and a girl, the elder one was the girl. Cedric would have had more, but they had to try so hard just to have these two. He was content.

Life was good, decades passed. Their children had already beca adults, and left ho for their own journeys. Well the older one at least that was. But happiness never lasts forever.

One day, Emily fell ill. The doctors in their countryside could do nothing for her. He could only co to the nearest city to cure her. It was also the city where his son was at. But upon hearing the cost of the treatnt, he sold everything his farm, his ho, everything he had cherished all his life. Even then, that was not enough. When he asked the bank for a loan, they refused to lend him the amount he needed. Without collateral, without soone to vouch for him, they would not lend him a single coin.

He turned to he person whom he thought he could depend on. He had heard so news when he asked about his son’s na. Most said that he was a successful businessman.

If his son was the supposed rich man that people said about then, if he signed as Cedric’s guarantor, the bank would approve of it without hesitation. Relief flooded Cedric’s heart. His son would surely help him. Family was family. Even if their interactions had waned over the years, even if they had grown apart, this was his mother’s life at stake.

So Cedric went to see his son. It had been years since they last t. His son was no longer the quiet, introverted boy. Unlike his elder sister who went for a journey, he just stayed at ho most of the ti. Cedric worried for him and sent him to the city for education which he was interested in and his bet paid off as his son changed and beca more confident.

He ca back ho from ti to ti unlike his sister who sent letters back ho. But only for a few years he did this, then he stopped. He stopped coming back, there was no way to contact him.

But contacting him, he was able to get a eting with him. Then he finally saw him, He had transford into a confident young man, well dressed and composed, surrounded by an air of authority that Cedric had never seen before.

For a mont, Cedric felt a glimr of pride. His son had succeeded. He had made sothing of himself. But when he explained the situation, Emily’s condition, the need for treatnt, the money he needed.

"You want take a loan from "

"Yes," Cedric said, his voice filled with urgency.

"I’ve sold everything, but it’s not enough"

"Even if you don’ have that much money"

"The bank said if you authenticate it, they’ll grant the loan. Please, son, your mother..."

"I can’t do that."

The words struck Cedric like a blow. He blinked, unable to comprehend.

"What do you an?"

His son sighed, leaning back in his chair.

"I have my reasons"

"I can’t sign this for you"

"Then the money"

He didn’t speak and Cedric felt the room spin. His mind struggled to grasp the aning behind those words. His own son his flesh and blood was refusing to help. He had expected warmth, understanding, perhaps even imdiate action. Instead, he was t with cold indifference.

"But she’s your mother"

Cedric tried again, his voice hoarse with disbelief.

"She’s dying"

"Do you understand that?"

"We raised you, we sent you here to study so you could have a better future so you could have a life beyond the farm, a life better than us"

"And now you tell you won’t help? Why? What reason could be more important than your mother’s life?"

"I don’t have to explain myself to you"

"I have my own responsibilities, my own life to take care of. I can’t just throw money away"

Cedric recoiled as if he had been slapped.

"Throw money away? Is that what you think this is?"

His voice beca louder

"This isn’t about money. it’s about saving your mother!"

"Do you even hear yourself? What happened to you?"

"This old geezer"

Though it was just a whisper, Cedric heard it. He couldn’t even believe his ears. Cursing his own father. Cedric searched his son’s face for sothing remorse, regret, hesitation but there was nothing. The boy who had once played in the fields, who had once clung to his mother’s apron, who had once laughed and cried in their ho he was gone. In his place stood a stranger.

"Security"

And that was how Cedric was thrown out, Cedric begged him but he was thrown out by him and that was how he t with Rex.
