What’s happened now?
Tan Xiao tossed aside his sword and hurried up the stairs!
Just two flights up, he ran into Max and Ken, who were also drawn by the noise, clearly.
The incident took place in the hallway, out in the open; the body lay there, half against the wall, half against the floor, recently dead with blood still flowing out.
Max closed his eyes, feeling both helpless and sowhat annoyed.
“Who found him first?” he asked.
“Louis and Lucia,” soone from the team imdiately answered.
The two, a man and a woman, were still in shock from their companion’s death, the man looking angry and the woman trembling.
Max asked them, “Weren’t you supposed to stick together? How did he die?”
The man nad Louis replied, “Even if we were moving together, I can’t keep my eyes on him all the ti! We saw there were many rooms along this hallway, so we thought if we each searched a room, we could save ti. Who knew that when I ca out, I would find him dead! Damn it! What’s going on with this ga?!”
Max, in disbelief, said, “You an to tell … at such close quarters, neither you nor Lucia heard anything when he was in trouble?”
“I really don’t know what happened!” Louis said anxiously, “I swear!”
Max looked at Lucia.
Her eyes were red-rimd and her voice trembling as she spoke, “I didn’t hear a thing, and by the ti I ca out… it was just too frightening. Please, let’s not split up again, it’s too scary…”
Ken couldn’t help but say, “Think again, how long was it from when you split up to when you found the body? Was there anything unusual? Think!”
“Definitely no more than three minutes!” Louis said with certainty, “We were checking the rooms, and besides the noise we were making, I didn’t notice any other sound. If there had been, it must have been very quiet, or I would have heard it for sure.”
Ken looked at Max, his eyes clearly asking: What do we do now?
“Let’s keep searching,” Max said with a glance at the body on the floor, his forehead wrinkled in irritation, “This ti let’s stick together and move as a group.”
Everyone agreed.
The unexplained death left them all on edge; now only six of them remained.
Tan Xiao thought for a mont, then followed them.
Soone whispered in the front to Max, “That kid is following us…”
“Of course I’m following you!” Tan Xiao, with sharp ears, heard it and loudly grumbled from behind, “Otherwise, if soone dies later, you’d pin it on ! How can I get an alibi if I don’t stick with you?!”
His words, firm and reasoned, sounded almost comical.
“Let him follow,” Max said indifferently, “If he is the killer, keeping an eye on him will enable us to monitor him.”
Ken caught up with Max and whispered, “You don’t seem to be very cautious around that guy.”
“There’s no need,” Max glanced at him, “Do you think that silly kid looks like a murderer?”
Ken hesitated, then shook his head.
As they walked, Max said worriedly, “That kind of fool can be dealt with anyti. What concerns more… is the Princess who’s nowhere to be seen.”
Ken had a sudden realization, “You an…”
“Yeah,” Max gazed at the dense vines outside the window, his voice somber, “People don’t just die for no reason. If it wasn’t that guy and it wasn’t one of our own, then the only possibility left is…”
Ken’s expression changed, “Right… if it’s the Sleeping Princess, that would explain why those people died without a struggle, without making any noise.”
Max patted him on the shoulder, “Anyway, be careful.”
