Su Man held her phone, staring blankly at the chat window.
Any other woman might suspect Lu Yuwen had grown tired of her, didn’t like her anymore, or had his eye on soone else.
But Su Man wouldn’t.
She hesitated for only two seconds before suddenly realizing: “He must have been working late last night and, like , overslept!”
Feeling reassured, Su Man got up, washed up, and had a al that was closer to lunch than breakfast. By around 11 o’clock, she figured Lu Yuwen should be awake by then, so she called him.
No one answered.
This was even more unusual.
Su Man found it odd. No texts, no answers—what’s going on?
Any other woman might have started guessing things again, but not Su Man. She kept calling persistently. On her fourth attempt, the call finally connected—
On the other end of the phone ca a man’s hoarse voice: “Manman…”
Su Man was startled. “What’s wrong with your voice?”
“I have a cold…”
His voice was low and sounded weak, devoid of energy. Su Man felt her heart clench tightly and asked anxiously, “How did you catch a cold in this hot weather? Did you check your temperature? Did you take dicine?”
Lu Yuwen replied, “Not yet…”
Su Man got up to grab her bag, speaking quickly: “Wait for , I’m coming to see you right now!”
Afraid sothing might happen to him while he was alone, she began preparing in a hurry, saying as she went, “Lie down and rest for now. Don’t hang up the phone—I’ll be there in no more than half an hour.”
Lu Yuwen said, “I’m fine. Just be careful on the road…”
“Got it, got it!” Su Man grabbed her bag, rushed downstairs, and shouted as she ran, “Mom! Do we still have any cold dicine at ho? Quick, get a box! And a thermoter!”
Her mom was downstairs arranging flowers, enjoying her leisurely mont. Hearing Su Man’s loud shouting, she turned her head curiously.
“Why do you need cold dicine? Are you sick?”
Su Man rarely got sick—an event as unusual as the sun rising in the west.
“No, no!” Su Man shook her head firmly. “It’s Lu Yuwen who’s sick. He has a fever, and he’s alone at the hotel with no one to care for him. I’m going to check on him.”
“Oh, Xiaolu is sick?” Her mom got up to fetch the dicine and asked Su Man, “Is it a wind-heat cold or a wind-cold cold?”
“What?” Su Man was completely baffled, frowning as she replied, “Just grab one of each! Hurry up—I’m in a rush.”
Her mom found a few boxes in the dicine cabinet and handed them to Su Man. “You can’t take dicine arbitrarily. When you get there, check his symptoms to see which one fits, then give him the appropriate dicine. The instructions are in the boxes—make sure you read them.”
“Got it!” Su Man took the dicine, packed it into her bag swiftly, then dashed out the door like a gust of wind.
She drove to the hotel and headed straight for Lu Yuwen’s room.
Even though she had dropped him off at the hotel many tis before, this was her first ti entering his room. Normally, she would just drop him at the entrance and drive away.
The phone was still connected, but there was silence on the line. Su Man wasn’t sure if he had fallen unconscious due to the fever. She knocked on the door multiple tis and spoke into the phone, asking:
“Lu Yuwen, I’m here! Can you hear the knocking? Open the door for .”
Still, Lu Yuwen didn’t respond.
But from inside the room, the sound of slow footsteps could be heard. Su Man waited patiently for a mont, and finally, with a click, the hotel room door opened.
Standing behind the door, Lu Yuwen looked pale, his eyes red, with a dazed expression that hinted at the delirium caused by his high fever.
Su Man’s heart instantly started pounding. Without thinking, she reached out and touched his forehead, quickly pulling her hand back as if burned. She said nervously, “You’re burning up! Forget the dicine—I’m taking you straight to the hospital!”
