Chapter 427: Chapter 424 – Silver Market and Adventurers’ Whispers
Morning in Silvermist arrived gently. Golden sunlight seeped through the gaps in the wooden windows of the inn room, illuminating the cold stone floor and the thick wool blanket on the bed. The air was still cool with the morning breeze carrying the aroma of fresh bread baking in the kitchen downstairs, mixed with the scent of dew on the paving stones and a faint sll of horses from the backyard.
Sylvia, Stacia, and Alicia woke earlier than most of the inn’s guests. They had a light breakfast in the still-quiet dining hall: warm, crispy bread with sweet wild fruit jam, steaming thin beef soup, and a glass of fresh water. They ate in comfortable silence, occasionally exchanging glances to plan the day ahead.
After breakfast, they got straight to work. The trade carriage had already been pulled into the inn’s backyard by the servants. The two zombie horses stood calmly in the clean wooden stable, their pitch-black coats faintly gleaming under the morning sunlight. Their red eyes glowed softly when they saw Sylvia approach. Sylvia touched the necks of both horses for a mont, sending a ntal command: Stay alert, but don’t scare anyone. Protect the carriage.
Stacia and Alicia helped arrange the trade goods skillfully. Sacks of fragrant spices were neatly stacked: sharp dried ginger, expensive golden-red saffron, sweet-scented cinnamon sticks, and black peppercorns. Rolls of thick wool cloth in mountain gray and earthy brown were arranged into an attractive display, while simple household items, sharp kitchen knives, small clay pots with carved patterns, and wooden spoons and forks were placed at the front of the stall.
Once everything was ready, they headed to the expensive stall they had paid for the previous night. The spot in front of the main square near the large fountain was indeed very strategic. The stone fountain sprayed clear water that sparkled under the sun, becoming a eting point for many people. The simple yet sturdy wooden stall was empty when they arrived. Quickly and coordinately, the three of them arranged their goods.
Stacia arranged the spices into beautiful small piles so their aroma would spread widely when the wind blew. Alicia arranged the wool cloth into soft pyramids inviting to the touch, while Sylvia put up a small stall sign that read "High-Quality Spices and Household Goods from the Eastern Mountains" in elegant, easily readable letters from a distance.
Silvermist Market began to co alive as the sun rose higher. Other rchants opened their stalls one by one. The sounds of promotional shouts, creaking cart wheels, and early buyers’ laughter filled the square. The aroma of street food, spicy at skewers, lting cheese-filled bread, and steaming hot soup mixed perfectly with the scent of spices from their stall.
"Fresh spices from the eastern mountains! Best dried ginger to warm the body in winter! Real saffron for luxurious cooking!" Stacia called out in a loud enough but still elegant and appealing voice. Her faint smile drew many housewives closer.
Several housewives and inn chefs imdiately crowded the stall. They bought spices in moderate to large quantities, praising the quality and more competitive prices compared to local rchants. Sylvia served them calmly and coolly, her voice soft but firm as she weighed and bargained. Alicia helped wrap the goods in clean neutral-colored cloth, her gentle smile making buyers feel comfortable and valued.
Between serving custors, Sylvia and her sisters did not forget to gather information. An adventurer dressed in thick leather with a long sword at his waist stopped at the stall. He bought several bags of black pepper and dried ginger for his journey supplies.
"You three are new here, right?" the man asked while counting silver coins. "I heard a large group from Eldridge arrived yesterday. They say the city is in complete chaos now."
"True," Sylvia replied while carefully weighing the spices. "We heard there’s a new dinsional rift north of the city. Is the story true?"
The adventurer chuckled, his voice rough from shouting in the forest. "Very true, Miss. It appeared about two weeks ago. Thick, strange purple mist, and occasionally small creatures like fast-moving shadows co out. Lord Harlan’s noble family controls it very strictly. They’re recruiting experienced adventurers and mages to guard and explore it. The rewards are quite good gold, ancient artifacts, even special material weapons. But the risk is high. Dozens of people have already gone missing inside that rift."
Stacia joined in while serving another housewife. "How is the condition of Nocture lately? We only heard vague news during our journey."
The adventurer shrugged while putting the spice bags into his pack. "Nocture? That zombie kingdom? They seem to be getting stronger. So rchants who passed the border said the city is safe and orderly. Their shadow zombie troops are smart and don’t bother ordinary people who co to trade. But who dares get too close? They say Queen Sylvia is traveling with her two sisters to strengthen herself. If she returns with new power, this world will definitely change drastically."
Sylvia only nodded slowly, her face remaining flat like an ordinary rchant. In her heart, she felt slightly relieved to hear reports about her city.
Throughout the morning until noon, their stall remained busy. The first day’s turnover was quite satisfying for new rchants. Many families bought spices for the upcoming winter stock, while adventurers and hunters bought thick wool cloth and household items for their expedition supplies.
In the afternoon, a burly bearded hunter with a longbow on his back stopped for a long ti at the stall. He bought two rolls of wool cloth to make new cloaks.
"That northern rift is very strange," he said while chewing on a stuffed bread he had bought from a neighboring stall. "It’s not like ordinary rifts full of fierce monsters. It’s more like a door to an ancient, forgotten dinsion. There are ancient runes on the cave walls that glow when touched. So adventurers say they heard ancient whispers inside their heads. I myself haven’t dared go too deep. Just reaching the first gate already gave
chills."
Alicia asked in a soft, concerned voice. "Is there any newer news from Nocture? We’re worried about that neighboring kingdom."
The hunter shook his head while stroking his beard. "Nocture is staying quiet, but their troops are increasing and becoming more organized. So say Queen Sylvia is traveling abroad to seek new power. Several minor gods in the northern region are starting to feel uneasy. They’re afraid Nocture will beco too strong and disrupt the balance."
Information after information was gathered throughout the day. Sylvia ntally noted everything with her sharp mory. The rift to the north sounded very promising, especially after their experience with Azure Dragon. anwhile, the news about Nocture made the three of them slightly more at ease. Sofia and Zark seed to be managing their duties well.
Afternoon turned to evening. The sun’s heat began to ease, replaced by a cool breeze blowing from the hills. Buyers started to decrease, but their stall was still busy with adventurers and mages who had just returned from hunts or patrols.
A young mage with a rune-carved wooden staff stopped at the stall. He bought a pinch of expensive saffron for his magic concoction.
"I heard Nocture recently destroyed several groups that tried to attack their border," the mage said while paying with silver coins. "They don’t play around. Their shadow zombie troops massacred the intruders without leaving a trace. They say Queen Sylvia is traveling to seek greater power. If she returns with new strength, this world will change drastically."
Sylvia smiled faintly only in her heart, her outer expression remaining calm and professional like an ordinary rchant. "We are just ordinary rchants trying to make a living. But thank you for the news, Master Mage."
As night approached, they neatly packed up the stall. The first day’s turnover exceeded expectations. After locking the remaining goods and paying the daily stall fee to the guild representative, the three of them walked back to the Silver Moon Inn with slow steps, enjoying the city’s atmosphere at dusk.
In the inn’s dining hall, which was busy again even though it was late, they ordered a more luxurious dinner: grilled venison steak with spiced sauce, warm mushroom cream soup, freshly baked buttered bread, and a glass of weak wine for Stacia.
At the surrounding tables, conversations continued to flow with valuable information.
A resting city guard captain spoke in a low voice to his colleague. "The northern rift has beco more active lately. Lord Harlan is requesting more experienced adventurers. The rewards are big ancient artifacts and bags of gold. But many have died or gone mad after going too deep."
Sylvia listened while elegantly sipping her herbal tea. Stacia and Alicia also quietly noted every important detail.
The night grew late. In their room on the second floor, the three sisters sat around a small table under the soft lantern light. The room air was filled with the scent of spices still clinging to their clothes.
"Tomorrow we’ll continue selling while gathering deeper information," Sylvia said softly, her voice cold but full of determination. "The rift to the north seems worth exploring. We need thorough preparation supplies, maps, and perhaps so contacts in the adventurer community."
Stacia nodded while leaning back. "And Nocture seems safe under Sofia and Zark’s watch. That news is reassuring."
Alicia smiled gently, her eyes sparkling. "This journey is getting more interesting. Who would have thought pretending to be rchants could provide so much information."
