Chapter 772: 771. Divine Idol_1
The dawn, at last, brought so light to the surroundings.
Despite still being enveloped in thick fog, visibility had significantly improved.
Lu Ban glanced at the ti—it was already seven in the morning.
The outside was cold, the mist itself being water vapor that condensed upon encountering tiny particles in the air; at this mont, the white fog was like crystals made of ice, making tiny noises as they pitter-pattered against the car windows.
Just as he was about to go online, he suddenly realized there was no signal.
“Do you have a signal on your phone?”
Lu Ban asked Scott, the driver who was waiting for others to wake up so he could switch shifts. Yawning, Scott decided to pull over onto the roadside.
“No, it seems we’re still so distance from Miskatonic.”
Scott glanced at his own phone and shook his head.
“I’m going to have so water while waiting for them to wake up.”
He grabbed a bottle of water from the car’s cooler, took a big gulp, and splashed so on his face, appearing sowhat refreshed.
Lu Ban also stepped out of the vehicle.
Taking a breath of the air, thick with gray fog, he felt as if his lungs were burning.
Scott didn’t smoke; instead, he grabbed the cara and began filming the surrounding environnt.
Lu Ban watched him, his gaze drifting towards the distance.
He saw that the gray fog seed to be dissipating.
“Hmm?”
Lu Ban noticed what appeared to be a building erging from the mist.
“Look.”
He pointed ahead, prompting Scott to turn around.
In the midst of the fog, the outline of a house with a spire unveiled itself as the fog lifted, resembling a church with its pointed roof and stained glass.
Only, this church looked long abandoned.
“What’s up?”
At the RV door, Wes yawned and slowly stepped down from the vehicle.
“There’s a church over there, and a road sign.”
Scott said, noting a highway sign by the road next to the church, indicating that Miskatonic was less than twenty kiloters away.
“That church doesn’t look half bad.”
Wes looked up at the church, which, if a proper church was filled with a sense of the sacred, this one was evidently more derelict, with a sowhat eerie air to it.
“Hey, wake up, Jas, we’ve found sothing good.”
He imdiately went back to rouse his companions, the other three still groggy, not quite grasping the situation.
“Let’s go in and shoot, co on.”
Wes called out, quickly pulling Scott along with him.
Lu Ban followed them into the church.
Indeed, the church had been abandoned, for besides the part visible from the front, the rest had collapsed—whether due to neglect over the years or natural disaster was unknown.
In these kinds of wastelands, tornadoes were easily spawned, those gale winds ravaging farmland, pastures, and easily demolishing houses.
The weather-beaten pews were in a state of decay, the wood already mottled; the prayer podium had collapsed, and faith was no longer present.
Scott’s cara lens roved, quickly turning toward the Divine Idol behind the pulpit.
Normally, such a church should not have a Divine Idol.
In churches used for prayer, it’s usually either a cross or so objects—rarely a specific Divine Idol.
Yet this church had a tall Divine Idol.
This divine idol looked as if it had been ravaged by wind and rain, the originally gray-white statue had beco sowhat dirty and slightly damaged. The cara panned down to the face of the idol.
This should have been a statue of the Virgin Mary, her arms ant to hold the Holy Child. But now, the idol’s arms were empty and the emptiness was not due to wear over the years; the break was very clean, as if whatever had been in her arms had life and had crawled away on its own.
There was nothing wrong with the facial features of the idol, except for the eyes, which were covered by a black cloth.
The black cloth was clearly placed there later; it covered the eyes of the idol, adding a touch of darkness and eeriness to what was originally a sacred statue.
“Damn, this idol is cool as hell!”
Wes exclaid as he moved closer, stepping over the collapsed lectern to reach the side of the idol. He reached out to touch it, feeling its rough texture.
“Why would they cover her eyes?”
He said and then attempted to climb the idol.
“Wes, what are you doing?”
Scott was still holding the cara, recording everything. He called out, even though he wasn’t a devout follower, the act of climbing the idol still felt like a taboo and made Scott uncomfortable.
“This place has been abandoned.”
Wes had already climbed to the shoulder of the idol, his hand on the neck of the Virgin Mary, reaching for the black cloth covering the eyes.
“Hey, what are you doing?”
Just stepping on the rubble and entering the church, Jas called out, making Wes pause for a mont.
“Let’s see what this really is.”
As he spoke, he had already grabbed the piece of black cloth.
The black cloth was coarse in texture and didn’t feel like fabric, giving an odd sensation. Wes didn’t think too much of it and tried to pull the cloth off directly.
However, the black cloth was wrapped tightly, and Wes had to exert force. But just then, the cloth suddenly loosened, and he lost his balance, falling backward.
“!!!”
Scott was about to help him, but Wes, quick as ever, grabbed the arm of the Virgin Mary. His foot slipped, and he ended up hanging from that arm.
Thankfully, it wasn’t too high. Wes looked down, let go, and jumped, landing steadily on the ground.
“That scared the hell out of .”
Wes exclaid, looking at the black cloth in his hand, before he looked up at the face of the Virgin Mary’s statue.
There were a pair of eyes.
Unlike the idol’s gray-white abstract style, the Virgin Mary’s eyes were very realistic, as if they had been intricately carved and set in place.
The eyes shimred with iridescent starlight, as if capturing the galaxy within them. On the gray-white stone, these eyes could be described as enchanting, causing Wes to be montarily transfixed.
Scott was also stunned; his cara faithfully recorded the sight of that pair of eyes. For so reason, he felt that the eyes were staring at him.
Jas was also drawn to the pair of eyes; he took a breath, his voice trembling a bit.
“This shouldn’t be like this. How could it be?”
“It seems that these eyes are the reason they covered the idol.”
Lu Ban said, the eyes not human but rather resembling those of so indescribable, great entity, or at least, they may have witnessed sothing.
“I think we’d better restore it to its original state.”
Lu Ban took the black cloth from Wes’s hands, carefully rubbed it with his fingertips to roughly identify the material.
“This isn’t fabric, but rather so kind of treated leather, like cowhide or deer hide…”
Thinking this, Lu Ban had a suspicion.
He did not say anything but instead climbed the statue and re-covered the Virgin Mary’s eyes with the black cloth.
“Let’s get going. We are about to reach Miskatonic.”
After Lu Ban completed these tasks, Jas, who was still absorbed in the pair of eyes, finally ca back to his senses and said faintly.
