Chapter 69: 068. Who is watching you_1

“Let’s sleep together tonight.”

Upon hearing Lu Ban’s words, Cui Siter was taken aback.

In the upper echelons of Abandoned Capital, indeed, so wealthy individuals harbored unspeakable hobbies, including fencing with those handso young n.

As a respectable detective, Cui Siter had also taken on similar assignnts in Abandoned Capital, which were, of course, to help those madams collect evidence of their husbands’ infidelities.

Could it be that Lu Ban had interests of that sort as well?

It is said that the stronger and more muscular the n, the more they are inclined toward this, with so even preferring to be the one who lies down.

No way, right?

Cui Siter instantly beca wary.

“Can’t you sleep in your own room?”

“If we sleep together, we can look after each other in case sothing happens at night.”

Lu Ban spoke righteously.

The quilt had already been placed beside Cui Siter’s bed.

“Besides, don’t you find it strange? We were invited to attend the wedding, yet they didn’t let us enter the house. The Hai Family’s mansion is so spacious, they must have guest rooms, it’s too much!”

Lu Ban sounded like soone complaining about a good friend who hadn’t invited them to their wedding in the first instance, with the tone of a deeply aggrieved woman from the inner chambers.

“Now that you ntion it, indeed…”

Cui Siter stroked his chin.

“No, that doesn’t an you have to share a bed with , does it?”

He realized.

“What if you fall asleep and a female ghost climbs onto your bed, and you can’t resist her? What then?”

Lu Ban spread out the quilt, preparing to undress.

“???”

Cui Siter edged towards the corner of the room.

“Why are you undressing?”

He instinctively reached for the gun under his pillow.

“Do you sleep in your coat? Don’t worry, you can trust , this bed is big enough. If we squeeze a bit, two people can lie down for the night without a problem.”

Lu Ban earnestly explained.

“There’s sothing off about you.”

Cui Siter firmly refused.

“…Alright, then I’ll sleep on the bench outside.”

Lu Ban picked up the quilt and spread it on the chair.

Cui Siter watched as Lu Ban placed the crowbar next to him and burrowed into the quilt.

After waiting a mont, seeing that Lu Ban seed to have fallen asleep, Cui Siter dared to lie down.

Perhaps it was the nightlong journey or perhaps the harrowing experiences had worn out too much of his energy, but Cui Siter soon beca drowsy and was on the verge of falling asleep.

Just as his consciousness was about to slip away, Cui Siter felt a hand suddenly grab his quilt.

He imdiately opened his eyes and scooped up the revolver from under his pillow.

Before the barrel could even be pointed in the right direction, he saw Lu Ban shaking him.

“…What’s wrong?”

Cui Siter felt extrely helpless.

“I just thought of sothing.”

Lu Ban said very seriously.

“We ca to Dried Water Town through the fog, and if it weren’t for those incidents, we might have been delayed further, or might have arrived only in the morning. Why would the Hai Family arrange for soone to receive us in the dead of night?”

“…”

The sowhat sleepy Cui Siter imdiately beca alert.

“Are you saying, they knew we were coming?”

Lu Ban nodded, then added.

“When we arrived at Dried Water Town, only two militian saw us, we didn’t encounter anyone else on the way, and those two had been on guard all night, not leaving to send a ssage. So there shouldn’t have been anyone to inform the people at the Hai Family’s place.”

And yet, as soon as Lu Ban and Cui Siter had just arrived, before they had walked far, they encountered that servant from the Hai Family.

“He couldn’t possibly stay awake every night just to et guests at the door, so I think he must have known we were coming and tid it perfectly.”

Lu Ban shared his speculation.

“But how did they know… There’s no one watching us… Wait, you an those monsters?”

Cui Siter felt a chill down his back.

Those wandering in the mist, without heartbeats, with eyes protruding like humans, only they had witnessed Lu Ban and Cui Siter erge from the fog.

There were also the emaciated villagers who had seen the carriage’s trail.

If it were these creatures surveilling them, reporting their arrival to the Hai Family…

“This wedding doesn’t seem very peaceful…”

Cui Siter had tackled tasks with Corrosion difficulty before; they were always full of unexpected developnts. He even began to wonder whether the bride and groom he would see at the wedding the next day might just be those with bulging eyes, sothing between a fish and a human.

“I’m going to sleep.”

Lu Ban said, then burrowed back into his blanket.

“??”

Cui Siter looked at Lu Ban in disbelief.

He just blurted that out and then lay down again on his own?

Now he left

unable to sleep; what was he up to?

Cui Siter set down his gun and lay back down as well.

Tossing and turning, his mind kept replaying those weirdly shaped people in the fog and that horrifying fish-headed statue. By the ti he finally felt sleepy and was ready to close his eyes, dawn was already breaking.

Cui Siter felt a noise near his ear.

Clang clang—

Clang clang clang—

So noisy…

Cui Siter opened his eyes, slightly confused and unsure how long he had slept.

He saw Lu Ban sitting at the table, which was set with several bowls, apparently breakfast.

“You’re awake? They offer free breakfast here; the seafood porridge tastes pretty good!”

Lu Ban said excitedly.

“…You got up early just to eat a free breakfast?”

Cui Siter yawned and got up.

He saw a big bowl of porridge on the table, filled with various fish and shrimp. In addition, there were fried fish and stead crabs, quite a feast.

Taking the bowl, Cui Siter ate a mouthful in a half-asleep daze. The mild porridge with its sweet seafood flavor helped him recover slightly, his thinking gradually becoming clearer.

He looked at Lu Ban.

This person was so spirited; had he really just slept soundly last night without any vigilance?

No, wait a minute.

Cui Siter seed to grasp sothing.

“You woke

up in the middle of last night to say those things so I would stay awake for your night watch?”

He blurted out.

“How could that be, right, when I went down to get breakfast just now, I inquired a little, and it looks like we won’t be able to attend the wedding today.”

Lu Ban answered as if it were only natural, then added another comnt.

“What happened?”

Cui Siter’s hand, holding the seafood porridge, suddenly stopped.

Could sothing have gone wrong?

Was the woman in the red bridal gown he t last night the bride?

This town feels increasingly dangerous!!!

Watching Cui Siter’s serious expression, Lu Ban smiled and picked up a crab, skillfully breaking it apart.

“Because they said the wedding is tomorrow.”

“Ah?”

Cui Siter’s movents froze.

“The wedding is tomorrow; we actually arrived early. Perhaps if we had followed the usual route, even if trapped by the mist, if we stayed put patiently until the fog lifted at dawn, we could have arrived at Dried Water Town.”

With a snap, Lu Ban cracked open the crab shell.
