Chapter 119: Elevator_1

“What was that just now?”

Chen Danshen broke out in cold sweat behind, sowhat curious.

“I told you, the ghostly soldiers borrowing the way,” Lu Ban responded matter-of-factly.

“But isn’t that superstition? Moreover, wouldn’t sothing like that only happen after so major disaster?”

Chen Danshen hesitated, expressing doubt.

“Not necessarily. The land here in Jiangcheng has always been fraught with disasters. Have you guys heard about the rumors surrounding the n’s dormitory at Jiangcheng University?” He Youwu suddenly spoke up at this mont.

“What rumors?”

“Look, the two especially tall buildings at Jiangcheng University’s n’s dormitory, they’re both twenty stories high, right?” He Youwu’s voice was very low, as if afraid sothing outside might hear.

“It’s said that was an ancient battlefield. In the past, Jiangcheng was considered a critical military location. Several hundred battles were fought in the areas outside the city. The dead were buried in wastelands. In modern tis, when developing the new district, those old burial grounds beca part of the real estate developnts, and Jiangcheng University’s campus is one of them.”

“Really? You’re not fooling , are you?”

Chen Danshen felt a tingling in his arms, a physical reaction to the excessive tension he had felt earlier.

“It’s true. Because of the heavy yin energy, two tall buildings were constructed there, housing only male students, to suppress the spirits of the ancient battlefield. So, during school ti, generally there’s no problem, but during holidays, when the students go ho and the yang energy is insufficient, that’s when incidents tend to occur,” He Youwu elaborated importantly.

Upon hearing this, Lu Ban also chid in.

“That’s right. I’m from Jiangcheng University myself. I heard from my senior that during his junior year, he stayed at school for a sumr internship and didn’t go ho. By then, there were hardly any people in the dormitory building. One night, he returned to school from the company, alone. The dormitory building was dark, with only the light from the dormitory supervisor’s room on the first floor.”

“He lived on the fifteenth floor and was planning to take the elevator directly. As he passed by, he noticed that the dormitory supervisor seed to be sleeping, lying in her room, covered with a white blanket.”

“The senior didn’t pay much attention, entered the elevator, pressed the button for the fifteenth floor, and started checking the ssages on his phone. After waiting for a while, he heard the sound of the elevator arriving. He opened the door and, without paying much attention, stepped out.”

“But as he walked towards his dorm room, he felt sothing was off. He tried to unlock his door with his key, but no matter how he turned it, it wouldn’t budge.”

As Lu Ban described the story, Chen Danshen felt cold sweat erging from his back once again.

“Can you not tell ghost stories at a ti like this…”

“What happened next?”

He Youwu urged Lu Ban on, probably with the thought that he shouldn’t be the only one scared until he almost peed himself.

“Hmm.”

Lu Ban nodded his head and continued.

“The senior tried again and noticed that the decorations around him seed different. He saw that the room next door seed to be lit, so he knocked on the door. It opened quickly, and a sickly looking student stood at the door—the senior didn’t recognize him at all.”

“He asked a question, to which the other replied that this was the thirteenth floor. Only then did the senior realize he had gotten off on the wrong floor.”

“He quickly thanked the person, turned to leave, but then he glimpsed inside the dorm room. On one of the beds lays a large portrait in black and white, with two greenish candles flickering beside it.”

“Although the senior felt indescribably strange, he didn’t dare to ask more and hurriedly left, taking the stairs to the fifteenth floor.”

“He found it strange as he was the only one who took the elevator and no one had pressed for the thirteenth floor, so why did the elevator stop there?”

“Why would there be a portrait laid out on a bed in the thirteenth-floor dormitory?”

“The next morning, the senior went downstairs and asked the dormitory supervisor about the previous night’s events, but the supervisor strangely stated that they had a group eting last night. They were in the building next door, and there shouldn’t have been anyone in the dormitory supervisor’s room at that ti.”

“He urgently inquired about the thirteenth floor, and the dormitory supervisor blinked in surprise, asking how he knew about that.”

“The senior was bewildered; he didn’t understand what the dormitory supervisor was talking about and asked again.”

“The dormitory supervisor then told him that the thirteenth floor was occupied by seniors, one of whom couldn’t earn enough credits and was stuck on his thesis, unable to obtain his degree and diploma. So, during the day, he committed suicide by jumping from the building. Their eting the previous night had revolved around this incident.”

“At that mont, the senior suddenly recalled why he found the man and the portrait a bit odd.”

Lu Ban lowered his voice.

“Because the person in the portrait was that very student!”

The atmosphere inside the car fell silent. After a while, Chen Danshen managed to squeeze out a smile.

“…This is one of those ghost stories every university has, right?”

“Anyway, things aren’t that peaceful around Jiangcheng University. Even my old seniors have told

as much.”

He Youwu felt as if he had been through an ordeal and had gone from a firm atheist to sowhat superstitious.

No matter who it was, having seen such a scene just now, they would be sowhat frightened.

“I’m sorry, it may be because you were giving

a ride that this problem occurred.”

Lu Ban said this and urged He Youwu to continue driving.

Strangely enough, after driving a few hundred tres more, He Youwu’s phone suddenly made a noise.

“Turn left at the upcoming intersection, be aware of changing lanes…”

He looked at the navigation, and the straight “Yin Yang Road” had disappeared, replaced by the familiar streets of Jiangcheng.

After taking a turn, they could see shops again and the occasional passerby.

“It seems, it seems like we made it out.”

He Youwu’s clothes were soaked through, and only then did he dare to relax, slowing down the car.

The police car attracted quite a bit of attention, with people seeing it entering the neighborhood and Lu Ban getting out of the car and heading downstairs, chatting amongst themselves.

After seeing off the two police officers, Lu Ban walked into his building, entered the elevator, and pressed the button for the thirteenth floor.

He glanced at his phone, and there were already discussions on Weibo about whether a criminal had appeared in his neighborhood.

Ding—

The sound of the elevator reaching its destination rang out, and Lu Ban stepped out.

“It’s so dark.”

He stamped his foot, but the voice-controlled light did not co on. Lu Ban turned on his phone’s flashlight, only to find the corridor looked worn, dirty, unlike the clean hallway at his own front door.

He turned to look at the floor number and saw it was the seventh floor.

“Strange…”

Lu Ban could only press the elevator button to go up, waiting with his phone in hand.

The surroundings were relatively quiet, with only the occasional sounds of conversation, cars, and dogs barking from outside.

Lu Ban watched the elevator coming down from the thirteenth floor, gradually nearing the seventh.

At that mont, he picked up on a different sound.

Creak—

A faint sound of a door opening reached him, and Lu Ban turned his head to see at the end of the corridor, under the ergency light’s green glow, a door slowly opening.

Peering inside, it looked like soone was sitting there.

Ding—

The sound of the elevator arriving went off, and Lu Ban turned to see the elevator stopping at the eighth floor.

The only logical reason for the elevator to behave like this would be if soone went from the thirteenth to the eighth floor.

The sound of the steel cables running started again, and Lu Ban’s gaze moved from the elevator floor indicator back to the door that had just opened.

Then he saw an old person, bent and stooped, standing right beside him.

The old person said nothing, just staring blankly at Lu Ban.

Ding—

This ti, the elevator truly arrived at the seventh floor. The door opened, and Lu Ban stepped in.

He had thought the old person would take the elevator too, but they just stood at the elevator door, unmoving.

“Are you going down?”

Lu Ban asked, simultaneously pressing the button for the thirteenth floor.

The old person only shook their head and waved at Lu Ban.

That gesture was like that of a marionette, stiff, wooden, and awkward.

Lu Ban waited until the elevator doors had completely closed, and this ti made sure he really was on the thirteenth floor before stepping out.

Familiar corridor, familiar security door.

He was back ho.
