# Chapter 23: You Cannot Na the Darkness "Gerald"
It started, as most problems at Halcyon Academy did, at breakfast.
Kael sat across from Yuuji with the expression of a man who had spent the entire night in deep communion with ancient, unknowable power — which he had — and had erged from that experience with one singular, pressing announcent.
"I have nad it," he said.
Yuuji looked up from his porridge. "Nad what?"
"The Shadowfla."
A pause.
"...Okay," Yuuji said carefully. "What did you na it?"
Kael straightened. Folded his hands. Looked Yuuji dead in the eyes with the gravity of soone delivering a prophecy.
"Gerald."
Silence.
Sowhere in the cafeteria, a spoon fell.
[System Notification: Unexpected Developnt Detected]
➤ Event: Ancient Forbidden Power Has Been Nad
➤ Na Selected: Gerald
➤ System Response: ...
➤ System Response: We Have No Protocol For This.
➤ Suggested Action: Ask Follow-Up Questions Carefully.
Yuuji set down his spoon. "Kael."
"Yes."
"You awakened a Tier-Unclassified Shadowfla power that cracked a stained glass window and sent two dozen ravens to haunt our dorm hallway."
"Correct."
"And you nad it Gerald."
"He felt like a Gerald."
Yuuji stared at him for a very long ti.
"Does Gerald have opinions about this?"
Kael tilted his head, as if listening to sothing only he could hear.
"...He says it’s distinguished."

## Elira’s Reaction (Which Was Worse Than Expected)
Elira arrived at the table four minutes later, set down her tea, looked between the two of them, and said: "Why do you both look like that."
"Kael nad his Shadowfla," Yuuji said.
"That’s normal. Ancient powers require a binding na to—"
"Gerald."
Elira stopped.
She picked up her tea.
She put it back down.
"I’m sorry," she said. "Gerald."
"Gerald," Kael confird.
A muscle in Elira’s jaw did sothing complicated.
[System Notification: Elira Vorter — Emotional State Update]
➤ Current Status: Trying Very Hard Not To React
➤ Internal Conflict: Dignity vs. Genuine Amusent
➤ Result: Dignity Winning. Barely.
➤ Margin of Victory: Approximately One (1) Sip of Tea
She took that sip.
"Fine," she said, with the tone of soone filing sothing away to deal with never. "Does Gerald have a preferred combat form?"
Kael considered this with genuine seriousness. "He prefers to erge dramatically. From the left."
"Of course he does," Yuuji muttered.
-----
## The Problem With Gerald
The issue, as it turned out, was not the na.
The issue was that Gerald had heard the na — really heard it, apparently, in whatever way sentient ancient fla heard things — and had decided he liked it.
Which ant Gerald was now responding.
To being called.
By na.
Yuuji discovered this during second period Enchantnt Theory when Kael, startled by a misfired spell from the next table, whispered "Gerald—" on pure reflex.
The shadows in the room lurched.
Every candle flickered black for exactly one second.
Three students yelped. Professor riton’s tea levitated off her desk and spun slowly in the air before returning to its coaster.
The professor looked at Kael.
Kael looked at the ceiling.
"...My apologies," he said. "Gerald overreacted."
[System Alert: Shadowfla Incident — Minor]
➤ Cause: Accidental Summoning Via Na
➤ Damage: Zero (Structural), Moderate (Psychological)
➤ Professor riton’s Response: Resigned Acceptance
➤ Note: This Is The Fourteenth Incident This Sester Involving Kael Zyrion
➤ Additional Note: Last Sester’s Record Was Eleven. He’s Improving.
Yuuji leaned over and whispered: "You cannot just say his na out loud in class."
"I didn’t an to," Kael whispered back.
"Then stop getting startled!"
"I was not startled. I was caught off guard. There’s a difference."
"What’s the difference?!"
"Startled implies I wasn’t expecting danger. I always expect danger. I was simply surprised by its timing."
Yuuji opened his mouth.
Closed it.
Turned back to his notes.
[System Note: Yuuji Has Decided This Argunt Is Above His Pay Grade]
➤ Wise Choice.

## Gerald Has Opinions (A Continuing Problem)
By midday, it was clear that Gerald was not just a na. Gerald was a presence. And Gerald, much like his nasake, had thoughts about everything.
Yuuji first noticed it in the library.
He was helping Kael research Shadowfla stabilization techniques — which mostly involved Kael reading and Yuuji holding books open at the right pages because Kael’s hands kept accidentally making the pages curl away from shadow contact — when the temperature in their corner of the library dropped two degrees.
"Gerald disagrees with this Chapter," Kael said.
Yuuji looked at the page. "It’s about containnt thods."
"He finds them reductive."
"He’s fire."
"He’s *ancient* fire. There’s a distinction."
Yuuji squinted at the shadows pooling faintly around Kael’s chair. "Can he actually communicate or are you just projecting?"
Kael paused. Listened. "He says you’re projecting."
"I— that’s not— he can’t—"
[System Notification: Gerald — Status Update]
➤ Sentience Level: Debatable
➤ Communication thod: Vibes, Mostly
➤ Current Opinion: Yuuji Is Loud For Soone Who Thinks So Much
➤ Relationship With Host (Kael): Symbiotic, Occasionally Arguntative
➤ Relationship With Yuuji: Warming Up (Literally and Figuratively)
Yuuji pointed at the shadows. "Tell Gerald I said hi and also to stop eavesdropping."
The shadows flickered.
"He says hi back," Kael said. "And he wasn’t eavesdropping. He was observing."
"Sa thing!"
"He disagrees."
Yuuji dropped his head onto the open book.

## The Part With Heart (Snuck In While Yuuji Wasn’t Paying Attention)
It happened in the late afternoon, when the academy’s enchanted skylights turned gold and the training yard emptied out and the three of them were just sitting on the steps outside the east wing because Kael said Gerald needed air.
Yuuji had stopped questioning these things.
They sat in silence for a while. The comfortable kind that had taken a while to develop but now felt easy.
Then Kael said, quietly: "He nad himself back."
Yuuji looked up. "What?"
"Gerald." Kael was looking at his hands, where faint traces of shadow drifted like smoke. "When a power accepts its na, it nas its host in return. It’s old tradition. Binding."
"What did he na you?" Yuuji asked.
A pause.
"Keeper," Kael said.
Sothing in his voice was different. Not sad exactly. But careful. Like the word ant more than he was letting on.
Yuuji didn’t push it.
Elira, sitting two steps up with her grimoire open but unread, said nothing for a mont.
Then: "That’s a good na."
Kael glanced at her.
"It ans he trusts you with him," she said simply. "Not just that you carry him. That you’ll keep him."
Another silence. Longer this ti.
Kael looked back at his hands. "...Yes," he said. "I think that’s right."
[System Notification: Bond Deepened — Kael Zyrion]
➤ Hidden Trait Unlocked: Quietly Carrying Sothing Heavy
➤ Note: He Doesn’t Talk About This Often
➤ Note: He Talked About It Just Now
➤ Reason: He Trusts You Both
➤ Gerald’s Assessnt of This Mont: Satisfactory
Yuuji leaned back on his hands and looked at the sky.
"Keeper and Gerald," he said. "That’s either the most intimidating duo in academy history or the most unexpectedly wholeso."
"Both," Elira said.
"Both," Kael agreed.
Gerald flickered warmly at Kael’s wrist, just once, like punctuation.
-----
## Evening: Back to Chaos (As Required By Law)
Of course, the mont couldn’t last forever.
Because as they stood to head back inside, a first-year ca sprinting around the corner, skidded to a stop in front of them, pointed at Kael, and yelled:
"IS IT TRUE YOUR SHADOW IS NAD GERALD?!"
Kael stared at him.
"...Word travels fast," Yuuji said.
"There’s a betting pool," the first-year gasped, "on whether Gerald could beat Ajax in a fight—"
"Gerald is not a fighter," Kael said with great dignity.
The shadows behind him surged six feet tall, crackled with dark fire, and knocked three potted plants off a nearby windowsill.
The first-year ran.
[System Notification: Gerald — Additional Status Update]
➤ Gerald’s Response To Being Called Not A Fighter: Noted
➤ Damage Report: Three Pots, One Student’s Dignity
➤ Kael’s Assessnt: "He’s sensitive about that."
➤ Current Gerald Mood: Vindicated
Yuuji watched the first-year disappear around the corner.
"You were saying."
Kael smoothed his cloak. "He has a complex."
"Gerald has a complex," Yuuji repeated slowly.
"Most Gerolds do," Elira said, completely straight-faced, and walked inside.
Yuuji stared after her.
[Bonus Objective Progress: Make Elira Smile (4.5/5)]
➤ Note: That Was Almost A Joke. She’s Evolving.
