Chapter 314: Audience with a King
"Your Majesty," Joseph III said, his voice carrying practiced formality that barely concealed his fury underneath. "Thank you for granting us an audience. We co seeking justice for a grievous wrong committed against House redith."
King Eric leaned back in his throne, one hand supporting his chin. "Justice. Define the wrong you believe requires royal intervention."
Joseph III’s jaw clenched briefly before he found his composure again. "House Kaiser. Specifically, Jack Kaiser. The heir to Duke Alaric’s holdings. He..." Joseph paused, as if the words physically pained him, "...murdered our son. Our only heir. And he delivered the boy’s severed head to our ho in a wooden box, presented by a butler and a child as if it were a gift, thanking us for hospitality."
Silence greeted the pronouncent.
Then King Eric laughed.
A genuine, belly-deep laugh that echoed off vaulted ceilings and made both rediths’ faces flush with humiliation.
"I’m sorry," Eric said, wiping at his eyes as his laughter subsided. "That was rude. But the image, a butler and little Annabelle Kaiser delivering a severed head like it’s a basket of fruit... that’s genuinely hilarious."
"Your Majesty, with all due respect..." Josephine started, her voice tight with barely controlled fury.
"Respect?" Eric interrupted, his tone still carrying amusent but gaining an edge as he stared them down like a couple of bad children about to be punished. "You co here demanding justice because House Kaiser responded to provocation, and you expect
to take your side? Let’s examine facts before we discuss respect."
He gestured to Aurelius, who stood to the king’s right. "Tell them what we know."
Aurelius stepped forward, his amber eyes locking onto Joseph III with intensity that made the older man shift his weight uncomfortably. When Aurelius spoke, his honey-smooth voice carried weight that transcended volu.
"Your son, Joseph redith IV, conspired with Marcus Thorne. He participated in the kidnapping of Annabelle Kaiser, the youngest daughter of Duke Alaric. The evidence is substantial. Multiple witnesses. Physical proof that your heir knowingly aided an enemy of House Kaiser in abducting a child from a noble family."
Joseph III’s face went pale. "That’s... we did not know of..."
"Your knowledge is irrelevant," Aurelius continued, as a faint smile crept onto his face. "Your son’s actions created the situation. House Kaiser responded appropriately under noble law. Jack Kaiser executed judgnt on soone who threatened his family. The thod of delivery was... creative, admittedly, but well within his rights."
"But to associate us with Marcus Thorne...." Joseph III protested, finding his voice again. "That exile is a disgrace! A sub-clan of House redith that we disowned generations ago. We have no connection to his actions. No responsibility for his choices. If you want soone to bla for this disaster, bla him! We’ll handle Marcus ourselves if that settles this matter."
"Handle him?" Aurelius’s brow furrowed. "Jack Kaiser already captured Marcus. He personally killed fifteen thousand rcenaries Marcus hired, then dragged Marcus and his commanders through a dinsional portal to a place where they’ll experience eternal tornt. Marcus Thorne insulted a noble house, waged war against them, and compounded the insult by kidnapping one of their own. His punishnt was absolute and justifiable."
The numbers hung in the air as they listened.
Lady Josephine’s hand flew to her throat. "Fifteen thousand? That’s... that can’t be possible. One person can’t..."
"One person did," Aurelius interrupted. "I watched Jack Kaiser stand in a field and kill and laugh about it. Not through so elaborate magical ritual. Through pure, concentrated violence that lasted perhaps ninety minutes from start to finish."
He paused, letting that sink in before continuing. "So when you say your son worked with Marcus Thorne, when you say Jack Kaiser murdered your heir, what you’re actually describing is the natural consequence of threatening soone who can kill armies. Your son made a catastrophically poor decision. He paid for it. You’re fortunate the paynt stopped there."
Joseph III’s composure was cracking. "Fortunate? Our heir is dead! Our bloodline ends with us! And you tell us we’re fortunate?"
"Yes," Aurelius said flatly. "You got off light. I’m genuinely surprised more harm hasn’t co to you. Marcus Thorne insulted a noble house, waged war against them, and insulted them again. What happened to him, what happened to your son, was justifiable under every law governing noble conduct. So anything you have to say is irrelevant."
King Eric leaned forward slightly, his amusent fading into sothing colder. "Let’s be clear about your position. House redith is neutral. You have no major allies. No significant military force. No particular value to the crown beyond paying your taxes on ti. You exist because larger houses allow you to exist. After all, conflict with you isn’t worth the resources required to erase you."
He gestured dismissively. "House Kaiser, by contrast, commands dark magic powerful enough to level cities. They have divine backing. They have an heir who can kill thousands of n alone. They have connections to every major house in Elysium and several beyond our borders. So when you co here demanding justice against them, what you’re actually doing is asking
to start a conflict with soone who could burn half my kingdom before I could mobilize a proper response."
"Your Majesty, surely you can’t condone..." Josephine started.
"I condone reality," Eric interrupted. "And the reality is your son participated in cris against a house that could destroy you without breaking stride. The fact that Jack Kaiser chose to only execute your heir rather than your entire family line demonstrates remarkable restraint. You should be grateful. You should be taking whatever remains of House redith, finding a nice quiet corner of the kingdom, and never drawing attention to yourselves again."
Joseph III’s hands clenched into fists. "So we’re supposed to accept this? Accept that a child murdered our son, and we have no recourse? No justice?"
"Justice was already served," Aurelius said, his honey-smooth voice carrying finality. "Your son helped kidnap a child. Jack Kaiser responded. The scales balanced. You want to pursue this further? Want to challenge House Kaiser? Want to demand retribution?"
He stepped closer, his amber eyes blazing with intensity that made both rediths step backward involuntarily. "Go ahead. Try. Challenge Jack Kaiser formally. Demand satisfaction through combat. See what happens. Because I promise you, absolutely promise you, that if you take one more step toward ssing with House Kaiser, I will personally pay you a visit. And unlike Jack, who has family teaching him restraint, I have no such limitations. I will burn House redith so thoroughly that historians will debate whether you ever existed."
The threat hung in the air like smoke after an explosion.
Joseph III opened his mouth. Closed it. Opened it again and managed, "This is... we ca seeking justice, and you threaten us?"
"I’m not threatening you," Aurelius replied calmly. "I’m explaining reality. You wanted to know where you stand. Now you know. You stand exactly nowhere. You have no leverage. No allies. No recourse. Your best option is to go ho, mourn your son privately, and pray House Kaiser considers the matter settled."
King Eric waved his hand dismissively. "Audience concluded. Royal guards will escort you to your carriage. I suggest you leave the capital quickly. And for your own sake, never speak Jack Kaiser’s na again unless you’re praising him for his rcy."
