Additionally, both the supplenting thod and draining thod have seven techniques.
These are twisting supplenting and draining, insertion and extraction supplenting and draining, swift and slow supplenting and draining, along and against supplenting and draining, breathing supplenting and draining, opening and closing supplenting and draining, and balanced supplenting and draining.
Lu Xuan used two of these:
Twisting supplenting and draining and insertion and extraction supplenting and draining.
Twisting supplenting and draining distinguish between supplenting and draining techniques based on the strength of twisting, angle size, frequency speed, operation ti length, and the direction of twisting force.
The supplenting thod involves needle insertion, achieving qi, with small twisting angles, slow frequencies, and light force. Thumb forward, index finger backward (left twist) force is predominant, characterized by repeated twisting and short operation tis.
Draining needle insertion, achieving qi, involves large twisting angles, fast frequencies, and heavy force. Thumb backward, index finger forward (right twist) force is predominant. Like the supplenting thod, it features repeated twisting operations, though operation ti is relatively longer.
It is worth ntioning that twisting supplenting and draining should be perford once qi is achieved, though twisting supplenting and draining thods can be applied to most acupuncture points.
Regarding insertion and extraction supplenting and draining, techniques are distinguished by the strength of insertion and extraction, range size, frequency speed, and operation ti length.
For supplenting in the insertion and extraction technique: needle insertion and achieving qi is necessary, but different in that the needle must first be shallow then deep, with heavy insertion and light extraction, small amplitude of insertion and extraction, and slow frequency. Like the twisting supplenting thod, it also features repeated twisting and short operation tis.
For draining: based on achieving qi with the needle, it requires first deep then shallow insertion, with light insertion and heavy extraction, large amplitude of insertion and extraction, and fast frequency. The characteristics align with those of twisting draining thods, also featuring repeated twisting operations with relatively long operation tis.
Lu Xuan was busy with the needles. While Song Xiaoyun and others were curious, they knew little about Chinese dicine and couldn't really ask anything.
