"Snorlax, use Mega Punch!" Red shouted, throwing a punch in the air to emphasize his command.
"Venusaur, block it with Wood Hammer!"
Venusaur's vines converged into a singular, massive wooden shield. Snorlax's fist slammed into the barrier with a sickening thud. The sheer kiic energy rippled through Venusaur's body, forcing the grass giant to skid back several paces.
"Keep going, Snorlax! Rapid-fire Mega Punch!" Red intended to end it here.
[Venusaur, discreetly release Sleep Powder. If you can just outlast the duration of the Belly Drum frenzy, you win.] Feng Che sent the encouragement via telepathy.
Snorlax hammered away, fist after fist raining down on Venusaur. Venusaur retreated until its back hit the reinforced wall of the arena. There was nowhere left to run. With a final, explosive strike, Snorlax shattered Venusaur's defensive vines—all thirty-two stalks snapped and fell to the ground.
Venusaur cried out in pain, its spirit flagging. Losing its primary appendages was a heavy blow.
"This is it! Snorlax, one last Mega Punch!" Red yelled, a victory smile spreading across his face.
But a second later, the smile vanished. Snorlax froze mid-swing. Its eyes stayed open, but a loud, rhythmic snoring echoed through the stadium. It was fast asleep.
Venusaur wasted no time. Its Leech Seed began aggressively draining the last of Snorlax's health. By the time Venusaur's vines finished regenerating, Snorlax looked gaunt, as if its very vitality had been sucked dry. With a gentle shove from a vine, the sleeping giant toppled over, unable to battle.
"That... was a grueling victory," Feng Che exhaled.
"Dammit, we were one punch away!" Red sighed in frustration, though he couldn't help but feel exhilarated. It had been a long time since he'd faced a losing streak like this. "Alright, let's go again!"
Red recalled Snorlax and sent out his own Venusaur. Feng Che countered by releasing his Red Gyarados.
"Red's Venusaur vs. Feng Che's Gyarados! This looks like a major disadvantage for Feng Che," the commentator shouted. "Will he prove himself an 'Against-the-Type Master' once more, or will Red take this point? Let's find out!"
"Feng Che, I'll show you the power of my first partner!" Red said confidently.
"Gyarados, Hydro Pump!"
Gyarados soared into the sky, a literal flood pouring from its maw. The torrent struck Red's Venusaur, pushing the heavy Pokémon back.
"Venusaur, Leech Seed!"
Green light pulsed from Venusaur as it sprayed seeds toward the sky. If even one caught in Gyarados's scales, the energy drain would be constant.
"Gyarados, Air Slash!"
With a mighty roar, Gyarados manipulated the air currents, slicing the incoming seeds in half before they could land.
"Don't let up! Petal Dance!"
Countless white petals erupted from Venusaur's flower, filling the air like a localized blizzard.
"Gyarados, Flamethrower!"
The sea serpent opened its mouth, and a pillar of fire roared out. The wind from Gyarados's flight fanned the flames, turning the arena into an inferno. The white petals were incinerated instantly. Gyarados then whipped up a storm, drawing the fire into a massive Fire Tornado that spiraled toward Venusaur.
"Holy crap! That's a Water-type, why is its Flamethrower so clean?!" "That Gyarados is too cool. I can feel the heat from here!" "With the wind boost, those flames are lethal. How is Venusaur going to break through?"
Red's Venusaur flinched at the approaching wall of fire.
"Don't be afraid! We've fought Fire-types before!" Red yelled. "Listen: charge up a Solar Beam in secret. While the tornado hits, use Dig to go underground. The moment the fire passes, erupt and fire the beam! We only get one shot!"
Venusaur nodded, steeled its nerves, and dived into the earth just as the firestorm scorched the surface black. To the audience, it looked like Venusaur had been turned to ash.
"Did it just get vaporized?" "No, look!"
A golden beam of light erupted from the scorched earth, aimed directly at the hovering Gyarados.
"I was waiting for that. Gyarados, coil and dodge!"
Gyarados twisted its serpentine body into a tight spiral, leaving a gap in its center. The Solar Beam shot through the empty space, piercing the clouds and clearing the sky with a blinding flash.
"He dodged it like that? I've gotta try that with my own Gyarados," Red muttered, impressed. "Venusaur, come out! Use Razor Leaf into a Leaf Storm!"
Venusaur emerged, caked in soot. It whipped its crescent-shaped leaves into a whirling vortex aimed at the sky.
"Gyarados, Hurricane!"
Gyarados coiled again, air pressure building around it. The Hurricane acted like a meat grinder, shredding the Razor Leaves into green powder that drifted harmlessly away.
Venusaur has Frenzy Plant left, but Gyarados is flying. It won't hit easily, Feng Che thought calmly.
"I can't let this drag on; it'll break Venusaur's spirit," Red calculated. "Even if it's not perfect yet, we have to use it. Venusaur, Frenzy Plant!"
Massive, ancient roots erupted from the ground, surging into the sky to ensnare the flying dragon.
"Gyarados, Flamethrower!"
Gyarados blasted the rising roots with fire, but strangely, the wood didn't ignite.
"Dodge and use Air Slash!"
Gyarados wove through the grasping branches, firing blades of air that clanged against the wood with a metallic ring.
Venusaur: [I'm running out of grass energy... the roots can't go any higher...]
Feng Che, hearing Venusaur's internal exhaustion via his telepathy, knew the match was over. Without the Pokémon's guidance, the massive roots began to collapse. As Venusaur fell from the height of its own creation, Gyarados swept down, creating a gentle whirlwind to catch the Grass-type and prevent it from becoming a pancake.
"Return, Venusaur," Red said softly, seeing his partner too exhausted to even keep its eyes open. The toll of Frenzy Plant was simply too high.
