"Yeah... this place is definitely hell.

His boots made faint squelching sounds on the slick terrain as August advanced cautiously.

He pressed forward, navigating through narrow tunnels and strange, vine-like growths that seed to twitch as he passed by.

His heightened senses were at high alert and every step felt like he was walking into a trap.

Then it happened.

A low growl echoed through the cavern.

August froze.

From the shadows erged two humanoid beasts with grotesque forms that were illuminated by the faint glow of the fungi.

Their eyes glowed crimson, and their grotesque, elongated limbs twitched unnervingly. They were both towering over him with their levels flashing ominously above their heads.

"Oh, shit." August didn't hesitate...

He bolted.

The creatures lunged after him, moving their heavy grotesque forms with alarming speed.

"Co on, co on!" August muttered under his breath as he sprinted through the uneven terrain.

The Void Hounds snarled behind him with their footsteps pounding the cavern floor. August ducked under a low-hanging stalactite, only to see the creatures tear right through it with frightening ease.

Suddenly, a chorus of eerie, guttural voices filled the air.

"FRESH AT!"

August's eyes widened as other figures erged from the shadows—nightmarish creatures of various shapes and sizes, all locked onto him with hungry expressions.

"You have GOT to be kidding !" he groaned while sprinting faster.

He zigzagged through the cavern, narrowly avoiding snapping jaws and outstretched claws. A vine-like appendage lashed out, nearly catching his leg, but he sorsaulted over it at the last second.

A large, boulder-like creature rumbled after him, sending tremors through the ground with every step.

August swiftly turned down another narrow tunnel, but just as he thought he might escape, he hit a dead end.

"Damn it!" he hissed while spinning around. The beasts were closing in.

Just when he thought he was done for, a hand shot out of the darkness and yanked him sideways.

He was dragged through a concealed opening into a side cavern, and the passage sealed behind him almost instantly. August landed hard on the ground, gasping for breath.

A cloaked figure stood before him. Their face was obscured by a dark mask with weird engravings. The figure crossed their arms, observing August with interest.

"Well," the voice was deep, neutral, and calm. "That was quite the entrance."

August coughed before wiping sweat from his brow. "Yeah, I like to make an impression. Who the hell are you?"

The masked figure leaned against the wall, watching him carefully. "I'm soone who knows better than to run headfirst into the jaws of death. Unlike you."

"What?"

"From the looks of things, you weren't thrown in here like the rest of us since you apparently still have weapons in your possession. It was foolishness to co here."

August rolled his eyes while pushing himself up. "Look, thanks for the save, but yes I did co here of my own volition. I'm looking for an old man, a forger nad Sir Dumblore. Have you seen him?"

The figure's body language stiffened slightly. "Whoever that is… he's probably dead."

August frowned. "Probably? That's not a great answer."

The figure sighed and walked over to a small pile of supplies tucked in the corner. "Hollow Dusk isn't a place for the living. Anyone thrown down here is left to rot. Beasts don't just roam here; they thrive. If your friend is still alive, he's in the deepest, darkest part of this place. But getting there…" The figure shook its head. "It's suicide."

August clenched his fists. "I don't have a choice."

The figure studied him for a mont before sighing. "Then you're either very brave or very foolish."

August squared his shoulders, adjusting his gear, and t the masked figure's gaze.

"Regardless of what you think, I'm going to find Sir Dumblore," he said firmly. "Dead or alive, I need to know what happened to him."

The masked figure sighed while shaking his head slightly. "You've got guts, I'll give you that. But guts won't keep you alive down here." He glanced towards the tunnel ahead which was filled with darkness yawning like a beast waiting to swallow them whole.

"Look, there are a few so-called 'safe zones' in this hellhole—fortresses of sorts, built by those who've managed to carve out so semblance of order. But getting to them..." He trailed off with a grim look. "It's not as simple as walking in and saying hello."

August narrowed his eyes. "Let guess—whoever rules over these places isn't exactly welcoming?"

The masked figure let out a dry chuckle. "Welcoming? No. Brutal? Absolutely. The strongest run the show, and everyone else? Slaves. Entertainnt. Or worse." He crossed his arms and sized August up. "If you're hell-bent on going there, you better be ready to fight. And I an fight to survive, not just to win."

August smirked. "I've been in tough spots before."

"Not like this," the figure replied sharply. "There's no coming back in here if you screw up. You fall, and you're done. The monsters aren't the worst of it—it's the people. People who've been trapped here for years, who have no intention of letting soone like you walk out alive."

August's smirk didn't falter. "Then it's a good thing I don't plan on walking. I'll be running circles around them before they even know I'm there."

The masked figure tilted his head in amusent. "You talk big. Let's see if you can back it up." He turned towards a narrow passageway that wound into the deeper shadows. "Follow , and whatever you do—don't make a sound."

August fell into step behind him, activating Perfect Veil.

His body blended into the darkness seamlessly as they began their journey through the twisting labyrinth of Hollow Dusk.

They stepped forward carefully, avoiding the crumbling bones, sharp pointy rocks, and the twitching vines that reached out from the walls as if sensing their presence.

---

Their path wound deeper, and the air thickened with the stench of decay. Low growls echoed through the tunnels, and distant wails reminded August that this place was alive in the worst ways possible.

As they crept forward, the masked figure gestured for August to stop. He pointed ahead, where a crude barricade of bones and tattered cloth blocked their path.

Two massive humanoid figures stood guard with their eyes glowing faintly in the gloom. One of them was gnawing on sothing—sothing that looked suspiciously human.

"Scavengers," the masked figure whispered. "They patrol these parts. Their senses are sharp, but they rely too much on their eyes. Stay close, move slow."

August nodded while creeping forward carefully. The guards sniffed the air, grunting in guttural tones, but the pair managed to slip past unnoticed. As they pressed on, August exhaled slowly.

"Smooth," he whispered.

"Not yet," the masked figure shot back. "The real fun starts ahead."

...

...

Hours later, an underground settlent of sorts stretched out before them like a grim caricature of a city.

The walls of the cavern glowed faintly from the bioluminescent fungi clinging to the rocks, giving the entire place an eerie green hue.

Crude structures, carved from stone and assembled from debris, dotted the landscape. The air was heavy with the stench of sweat, blood, and desperation.

The entrance gate was made of twisted tal and reinforced with boulders. Guards ard with crude spears and spiky blades stood watch with faces that had been hardened by years of survival in this forsaken place.

As August and the masked figure approached, one of the guards barked, "Halt! New arrivals, eh? State your business."

The masked figure stepped forward. "We're here for sanctuary. We an no harm."

The guard's eyes narrowed as he scrutinized them. His gaze lingered on August. "We don't trust outsiders. Got any proof you're not here to stir up trouble?"

Before August could respond, the masked figure pulled a small, glowing shard from his pouch—a token of sorts. The guard eyed it suspiciously before nodding. "Alright, you can enter. But cause any trouble, and you'll end up in the fighting pit—or worse."

The gate creaked open, and August and the masked figure stepped inside.

The sight before them was both fascinating and horrifying. Tents made of rock and tattered cloth sprawled across the cavern floor, forming haphazard alleys where emaciated figures scrounged for scraps.

Fires burned in small pits, casting flickering shadows over the grimy faces of the inhabitants. So people bartered with strange items—bones, glowing stones, and even what looked like chunks of flesh.

But the most prominent feature was the fighting ring at the center of the settlent.

A crowd had gathered, cheering and jeering as two bloodied figures exchanged savage blows. Find more to read at My Virtual Library Empire
