Lavaz Town, Camille has been restless lately.

Although there was good news everywhere about Shire’s victory, and she even saw related news in the newspapers, she marveled like the neighbors: "How did he think of using the River Som to encircle the Germans?"

Camille was not interested in this, as always.

But as long as it was related to Shire, she wanted to know, as if a kind of magic power pulled her to understand. It seed that only by doing so could she put her mind at ease.

However, the reality was quite the opposite. The more she knew, the more anxious she beca.

"Oh God, that’s the River Som." Camille complained to Dejoka:

"How could they send Shire to such a place, he’s been stationed in Belgium all this ti, and he just finished a battle!"

"I heard that 100,000 British died that day, and the French Army also suffered 40,000 casualties in one day."

"It’s too dangerous there. They can’t rely on Shire to solve everything. He’s only 18!"

Dejoka looked at Camille incredulously: "But we all know that Shire defeated the Germans there. He’s already won, Camille."

"That’s now." Camille retorted: "The Battle of the Som isn’t over yet, is it? So the danger still exists!"

Dejoka was speechless. What Camille said seed reasonable.

But on second thought, as long as Shire was in the army, as long as the war continued, the danger would always exist. It had nothing to do with whether Shire was at the River Som.

Still, Dejoka said nothing.

He understood that a mother worried about her child would never put down her anxiety, unless Shire stood in front of her.

...

At around four in the morning, a beam of blurry headlights suddenly flashed through the dark town, and the sound of a few dogs barking faintly ca through the rain.

Camille suddenly woke up, she sat up straight from the bed, listening carefully to the noises outside the window.

"What’s happening?" The awakened Dejoka turned over and asked groggily.

"Soone’s coming." Camille replied: "It’s the sound of a car!"

"Oh please, Camille." Dejoka couldn’t help complaining: "You’re too tense, a bit neurotic."

But the next second, the car engine’s noise roared downstairs.

Camille hurried to the window and lifted a corner of the curtain.

Dejoka covered his head helplessly: "Do you check every car that passes by? That can’t be Shire, Camille, he’s still at the River Som, now the commander of the 6th Group Army, commanding over 200,000 n. He can’t just leave the troops anyti to co back!"

But Camille scread: "Luo Lang’s car, it’s Shire, Dejoka, it’s Shire!"

Saying this, she excitedly ran downstairs, quickly returned with an umbrella, and rushed out again, a series of rapid "thump, thump" sounds from the wooden staircase.

Dejoka couldn’t believe it, could this be telepathy? Could Camille sense Shire?

Half-believing, he got up and walked to the window, just in ti to see Camille in her pajamas under an umbrella welcoming Shire out of the car downstairs.

She guessed right, Dejoka shrugged, he could only be convinced.

...

After Shire ca back, he didn’t even take a bath, just exchanged a few words with Dejoka and Camille, then went into the room and fell asleep.

He had slept for several hours on the train, but for so reason, sleeping on the train always made one feel tired despite being asleep.

However, it was still much better than sleeping in the trenches.

It wasn’t until after five in the afternoon the next day that Shire woke up groggily.

He glanced around his room, finding this familiar yet unfamiliar environnt very clean, only he appeared out of place with his dirty clothes. The mud on his pants and cuffs had dried and turned stiff.

Shire took so ti to shower and change into clean clothes, discovering he was so hungry his legs were weak.

Calculating, he realized it had been over twenty hours without food or water, along with a bit of a headache and a stuffy nose, like he was about to catch a cold.

Shire frowned, perhaps he overexerted on the battlefield, and once back in a comfortable environnt and relaxed, beca unusually fragile.

Going downstairs, Shire unexpectedly saw Dejoka and Camille both there, sitting on the sofa discussing sothing in low voices.

Seeing Shire, Camille stood up and hugged him, then affectionately patted Shire’s still wet hair: "Hungry, right? Dinner is ready!"

"I heard you have a week’s leave?" Dejoka stood up and sat at the dining table.

"Yes." Shire sat down: "But a day has already passed."

"Many people are curious about your battle at the River Som." Dejoka’s smile held pride: "No one expected you to use the navy’s landing craft and amphibious landing ships on the River Som."

Camille served a steaming apple pie, carefully cutting it with a dinner knife: "The key is the River Som. Originally, everyone was wondering how our Shire would break through the Germans’ impregnable defense, and he ended up using the river."

She passed a piece of pie to Shire as she spoke.

Shire accepted the pie and looked at Camille in surprise, this wasn’t sothing she would normally say.

Dejoka understood Shire’s expression, he laughed: "Don’t doubt it, Camille has been reading the newspapers, she’s learned a lot about military matters now."

"How did you think of it?" Camille asked, her eyes shining, discovering that the person she admired most was her son.

Shire, chewing his food, answered indistinctly: "Actually, it was simple. If we couldn’t co up with a suitable thod, there might only have been one outco..."

Shire suddenly realized he had spilled the beans, quickly stopping, and stealing a glance at Camille.

After a pause, he covered it up: "I an, that might have caused massive casualties. To avoid that, I had to do my utmost."

Camille nodded lightly, understanding, pretending not to grasp the original aning and maintaining a smile, but there was a hint of heaviness in it.

Dejoka shifted the topic, he asked Shire: "Last ti you ca back, we seed to have an agreent."

"Did we?" Shire feigned ignorance.

In truth, he rembered well Camille’s words: "Next ti, you must bring her over. I know her na is Lucia."

Camille raised her eyebrows, leisurely eating a piece of pie, presenting an indifferent appearance: "I know she works at the officer’s club. If we ask Major Lauren to bring her, would she be willing?"

"No, mom..." Shire beca a bit anxious.

Dejoka chid in: "Major Lauren said, if it doesn’t work, we can have Major Fernan intervene, as Major Fernan knows her well."

This bastard Lauren, Shire cursed inwardly, knowing the guy wasn’t reliable!

"Choose one." Camille stared at Shire: "Will you tell her, or shall we..."

"I’ll tell her." Shire answered in despair, for what else could he do?
