The giant creature moved faster than anticipated.
Even the helicopter couldn’t keep up with it, and Wei Tianyang was quite satisfied with its performance. By the ti they arrived, the city would likely be almost destroyed.
Commander Lu’s voice ca through the earpiece.
"Yaha, we’re now calling that guy ’Death Knight’. The drones have captured clear footage, and I’m sending it to you now." Commander Lu said.
As soon as he finished speaking, a small window popped up on the HUD. The Knight’s arms hung at his sides, but his slender legs moved as if wound up by springs, creating afterimages as they moved.
Its upper body was shrouded in a black mist, with a large group of unidentified flying creatures following it.
This scene reminded Wei Tianyang of his first encounter with Baphot, surrounded by a swarm of giant blood-sucking flies.
These were companion creatures, residents in the grand narrative where each acts as a character, their behaviors forming Chapters, while those companions were like punctuation marks.
Wang Ye was also reminded of that night in Yin Country, with mutated Zhao Ling surrounded by a swarm of mutated monsters. These were the residents of Fengrao City who got affected—could it be that similar creatures always accompanied these giants?
"We can’t get any closer! Those flying creatures are heading towards us!" the pilot said.
Wei Tianyang opened the helicopter’s door and swung the machine gun to the front.
"Aren’t you going to do sothing about it?" Wei Tianyang asked with a smile.
Wang Ye opened the other door, and the night wind rushed into the cabin. The silver moon hung high in the sky, and the wilderness was like a sea of ink. In an instant, he had an illusion that he was back in Fengrao City.
The flying creatures attacked from the 12 o’clock position, and as they got close, the helicopter’s front laser scanner quickly modeled them. Through the HUD, both Wang Ye and Wei Tianyang saw their appearance and realized they were human-sized, bat-like creatures.
"No good, it’s too dense, we can’t fly through there," the pilot said, changing course, turning the helicopter to the right. Wei Tianyang saw the city lights on the horizon and the towering giant.
It had already entered the city, its massive body easily toppling skyscrapers, like a child wading in water, plunging into a concrete puddle, causing splashes everywhere.
Commander Lu’s urgent voice ca through Wei Tianyang’s earpiece: "Wei Tianyang! The Death Knight has invaded the city! Hurry up and do sothing!"
"The helicopter is being obstructed by the companion creatures. We’re preparing to proceed on foot," Wei Tianyang replied.
"Aren’t you... Can’t you fly?! Didn’t you effortlessly deal with the situation in Fengrao City?!" Commander Lu couldn’t stay calm.
"Look, there’s a fog spreading around that thing, I don’t know what it is, it could be toxic, who knows? I’m not sure if it will affect ," said Wei Tianyang.
"Then... then act as quickly as you can, the casualty numbers won’t look good," Commander Lu said.
Wei Tianyang turned off the communication and patted the cockpit partition.
"Land, land," he said.
The helicopter descended rapidly, and when they were about 2 ters above the ground, the two of them jumped out, then watched as Moby Dick flew away.
"Good luck to you, we’re going back to refuel," the pilot said.
"We’re still 9 kiloters from the city, and I’d say a lot of people have already died," Wang Ye spoke with what seed like anger.
"People are always going to die; those things have always been a threat, but governnts around the world don’t see it that way," Wei Tianyang said.
They said no more and began to make their way quickly on foot toward the city. Wei Tianyang jogged to test Wang Ye’s physical ability, and to his surprise, Wang Ye was able to keep up even after half an hour.
"You’re well trained," complinted Wei Tianyang.
"That’s not the point!" Wang Ye, drenched in sweat, shouted loudly.
"Why didn’t they give you the Black dicine?" Wei Tianyang asked.
"Don’t even think about it!" replied Wang Ye.
"You’re a decent warrior, have you considered changing employers?" Wei Tianyang said.
Wang Ye ignored him this ti.
Wei Tianyang had already probed his mory, and he approved of the soldier before him. He was resilient, his thods cruel, yet he had a heart that couldn’t bear injustice. If Wang Ye would join, he would beco a perfect warrior.
"I know what you’ve been through, Wang Ye, I know your anger, I like your anger. But clearly, your unit doesn’t know how to make good use of you," Wei Tianyang said.
"You talk too much," Wang Ye said.
"Co on, don’t be so serious," Wei Tianyang said.
"Do you know, Wei Tianyang? I used to imagine what you looked like, they said you were a hero," Wang Ye said.
"The title of ’hero’ is an insult," Wei Tianyang said, laughing.
"Don’t make shoot you," Wang Ye said.
"If you kill , what about that big guy?" Wei Tianyang asked.
"I’ll kill you first! Then go kill that big guy!" Wang Ye yelled.
"You really can’t take a joke, getting angry all at once," Wei Tianyang laughed.
"Shut up! Shut up! Shut up!!!" Wang Ye, grinding his teeth, dashed forward, quickly running ahead of Wei Tianyang.
Wei Tianyang laughed, quickening his pace.
The two of them jogged into the city. The overhead bridges were collapsing, the streets were jamd with vehicles trying to leave the city, explosions were heard sporadically, along with the screams of people.
The buildings near the suburbs had already turned to ruins. Navigating through them, as they ran past the glass do plaza of a large shopping mall, the advertisent signboard above suddenly fell, shattering the glass and landing near the entrance.
Wang Ye couldn’t see Wei Tianyang’s figure. He saw soone dart out of the hall in front, followed by the massive porch stones crashing down, shaking the ground, and blocking the entrance.
There was a small gap just big enough for him to crawl through, so Wang Ye imdiately got down. As his ear touched the ground, he heard the echoes and tremors of the Death Knight moving, as if the earth was breathing.
He pushed his Gauss rifle out first and then crawled out himself, with two-thirds of his body sticking out of the mall’s wreckage, but the equipnt bag on his lower body got stuck in the crevice.
He twisted a bit, then braced his arms, held his breath, and pulled himself out.
Wang Ye tried several tis but still couldn’t pull himself out.
Then, the person who went out before him returned, his tall figure blocking the city’s light, casting a deep shadow on the ground.
Wang Ye looked up with difficulty and saw Wei Tianyang, backlit with the light, enveloped in dense darkness.
"We need to hurry."
As Wei Tianyang spoke, he extended his bandaged hand.
Wang Ye reached out to grab it, but Wei Tianyang wasn’t trying to pull him out. Instead, he grabbed the edge of the debris, and the stones cracked audibly, astonishingly lifted with ease.
Wang Ye quickly crawled out, picked up his Gauss rifle.
The stones thudded down, sealing the path completely.
"A lot of people died."
Wei Tianyang slapped Wang Ye on the back and laughed. Wang Ye noticed his face was sared with dust, and his pupils were crimson.
"You could have taken care of it easily, right?" Wang Ye challenged.
Wei Tianyang lifted his bandaged hand, squeezed his fist, and laughed, "Depends on my mood."
