Wang Ye tossed his 48-hour survival pack onto the bed and walked over to the window to pull back the curtains, allowing sunlight to stream into the room.

He had left Yin Country two or three months before winter set in to join the Black dicine Investigation Team of the United Council.

This unit was different from the peacekeeping forces; it was smaller in size, with just 1,200 mbers on a five-year enlistnt, stationed at the Cold Mountain Base in the Sethiyan Federation under the managent of the Federation Army in Jige State to deal with the Black dicine smugglers who had beco increasingly active in recent years.

After the incident in Fengrao City, many soldiers in the military started to consider retirent, and he was one of them. So stayed until their discharge then lost contact after returning ho, while others joined PMC.

He then received a call from his forr superior, Commander Lu, who invited him to take the foreign legion’s entry test for the United Council.

He wasn’t close with Commander Lu, knowing only that the field training camp he had previously trained in was in his combat zone. Wang Ye was surprised that a man with a tarnished reputation like himself would be rembered by him.

After completing the preliminary selection and physical tests in Yin Country, Wang Ye had co to the Sethiyan Federation.

He did not change his nationality but applied for a work visa instead.

There was nothing left in Yin Country to hold his affection, not family nor mission; all had turned to ash. A feeling of freedom so vacuous enveloped him, leaving him restless.

In the blink of an eye, he was already 24 years old, his experiences of the last decade felt like they happened yesterday, yet they could now be condensed into a single sentence: killed a few people, served a few years as a soldier.

The dormitory was for six people, quite spacious, with the vast parade ground of the base visible outside as well as the distant helipad.

Gray military trucks rumbled past, while several Federation soldiers were chatting by the roadside.

"Hey?"

Wang Ye turned around to see a black soldier with his bag on his back, standing at the door and greeting him.

He wore headphones and could understand the other person, and likewise, the other could understand him.

"I haven’t got the wrong room, have I?" the black man laughed.

"This is Room 12A, you’re in the right place," said Wang Ye.

"I’m Da Gu! Nice to et you! I guess you’re Wang Ye, right? After all, you’re the only one from Yin Country in our dorm," Da Gu said.

Wang Ye nodded. Of the six soldiers sharing the dormitory, there were two other black n from Heisai State, and two Caucasians, one from Libitelli and one from Prussia.

Da Gu walked into the dorm, found his bed according to the naplate, and stuffed his luggage under it.

"You’re right above , Wang Ye!" Da Gu laughed.

Wang Ye looked at him, trying to guess his age but failed. He couldn’t tell the age of black people.

This black man had a long reach and was rather solidly built, unlike the emaciated black n he had seen on TV. They exchanged casual conversation for a while, and others started trickling into the dorm.

Everyone joined the chat and got to know each other.

Pepe from Libitelli had the longest nose in the room and orange short hair; he was a guy who liked to joke around.

Schweinsteiger from Prussia was not one for small talk, speaking very formally and was the oldest, but to fit into the atmosphere of the room, he still forced out a few cold jokes, leading to a long silence.

Malum’s Parika, once a warrior from the small state, was very young. He had earned glory in his country’s civil war, and now, he was here seeking new challenges.

The other soldier from Heisai State, Mika, on the other hand, appeared much more laid back—everyone called him "Easy Guy" because he didn’t carry the air of a military man.

They got along quickly; perhaps this was a soldier’s unspoken understanding. Da Gu was the most enthusiastic and lively of them, acting like a glue, trying to keep everyone in the dorm together.

The people in the dorm were all very curious about the accident in Fengrao City. They all knew of Wei Tianyang, and Wang Ye revealed that he had indeed been present that night.

Even soone as socially reserved as Schweinsteiger was curious enough to co over, wanting to hear what Wang Ye had to say.

"I did see it; the Emperor turned into so kind of monster that night," Wang Ye rembered.

"Your superpower special forces must have been really busy then," Mika said.

"I didn’t see the Superpower Special Departnt; maybe they were elsewhere..." Wang Ye shook his head.

"That’s unusual. In such a situation, the Trinity is bound to be deployed," Da Gu said.

"In the end, it was Wei Tianyang who solved the problem. It was the first ti I saw him, even though I had heard rumors about him since I was a child and had heard about him on the news," Wang Ye said.

"That must have been a big deal, Wang! Your country must have given you a hero’s dal!" Da Gu laughed.

Wang Ye didn’t laugh but just shook his head and said, "That night, we lost the Emperor, and many people lost their loved ones. There were no dals, only scars."

"Oh..." Schweinsteiger sighed and patted Wang Ye on the shoulder.

"No dals? That’s not glorious at all!" Parika felt a little indignant for Wang Ye.

"What good is a dal? It can’t bring back a life," Wang Ye said.

"It’s a door, Wang Ye; when you touch a dal, it brings you back to that day, that mont. You see the people who died in that incident again. You can talk to them, sit with them; you can see them anyti, anywhere," Parika said.

Wang Ye smiled, nodding in agreent.

"Tell us about Wei Tianyang; the news said, he turned into a huge, black giant! Wow! That must have looked so cool! What did he look like when you saw him?" Pepe asked.

"I couldn’t see clearly; it was too dark that night. It was raining, with fires on the ground. I only saw so red light... I guess those were his eyes," Wang Ye said.

"That’s so damn... Seriously, I don’t know if it’s a good thing that he exists in this world," Mika said.

"I’ve heard so bad rumors about him. He killed a lot of people, though it was by accident... But considering how big he can get... From a military standpoint... I’m not sure how to defeat him if I considered him a hypothetical enemy," Schweinsteiger said.

"Don’t be so pessimistic; militaries of various countries should be propagandizing him as a hero by now, right?" Mika said.

"Buddy, in this world, whether a person is a hero or a terrorist, it’s just a matter of what those in charge say," Da Gu whispered.

"Does he count as a soldier? Isn’t he with the United Council?" Pepe asked.

"Of course, technically, he’s our colleague. But he’s been missing for several years; no idea what his current situation is," Mika said.

"I don’t care about him... Anyway, soone like him... he doesn’t intersect with our lives..." Wang Ye shook his head.

After he spoke, a whistle suddenly sounded outside the barracks, and all six stood up.

The first training session since their arrival was about to begin. Wang Ye adjusted his breathing, hoping to imrse himself in sweat and training to shake off the unease and emptiness.
