Leng Kai took the straps from his teammate and pressed Mokrev down on the ground, securing his hands behind his back.
No matter how Mokrev cursed, Leng Kai ignored him.
At this mont, the burly white man had finished communicating with headquarters and said, "Now cos the hardest part, we need to get this guy out of here."
"Don’t go near the electronics market in the city; they have electronic interference there. We’ll evacuate from the south side," Leng Kai said.
He had been underground here for six months and had long understood the ins and outs of Mokrev’s operation.
"Do they have any anti-vehicle fire positions?" the burly white man asked.
"There are so on top of several buildings, but they evacuated first, and I don’t know where they are now," Leng Kai said.
"Understood, we’ll move through the insides of buildings to avoid the main streets. The convoy in the vehicles will be waiting for us in the countryside to the south," the burly white man said.
He made a rallying gesture, and the others ford a defensive formation; at the sa ti, soone handed Leng Kai an ICR rifle and a pair of AR glasses.
Leng Kai took the weapon, gripped the handle, then put on the glasses. The HUD indicated that the rifle had confird his pheromones, and the firing system was online; next, he linked into the team’s encrypted frequency, and seven vital sign signals appeared as green dots in the upper left corner.
The burly white man, leading two others, went first, with Leng Kai escorting Mokrev behind, followed by four teammates—two n and two won—covering the rear.
The nine-person line quickly left the main street and darted into the gaps between unfinished buildings in the slums, moving south along the narrow alleyways.
All the way, Mokrev kept cursing and mocking, which made Leng Kai suspicious.
"Do you think capturing will be that easy? Without , the power balance in Heisai State will be disrupted, and the conflicts between nations will quickly end. This is definitely not what they want to see,"
Mokrev turned to look at Leng Kai with a grin.
"Shut up!" Leng Kai snapped, jabbing him hard in the lower back with the butt of his rifle.
Mokrev staggered to the ground, and Leng Kai grabbed his arm with his left hand, hauled him up, and urged him to keep moving forward.
"Damn it... I thought you East State people were trustworthy. The price I offered was well above the market average. And this is how you treat ?" Mokrev said again.
Leng Kai did not respond.
"Need so tape, Kai?" the burly white man looked back and smiled.
They reached an intersection, and the burly white man switched his rifle to the other shoulder, pressed against the left wall, and peeked to the right of the corner.
With a wave of his hand, the line of people followed swiftly across the street and into the next intersection.
Leng Kai saw a shadow flash across the ground; he looked up—no matter how narrow the gap between the unfinished buildings, it was about four ters across, too far for an ordinary person to leap.
"Did you hear sothing?" a female teammate from behind asked.
"Watch the rooftops, there could be an ambush," Leng Kai said.
The black man at the rear tapped his earpiece softly twice and said, "Eagle Nest, requesting drone support."
"Roger, five minutes ETA. Should the feed be sent to the captain?" Headquarter’s voice ca in.
"No, give it to Lion. He’s with the VIP, not engaging in combat," the White Captain said.
The team continued moving forward, the burly white man projected a city map onto everyone’s AR glasses HUD and marked a clear path.
On Leng Kai’s HUD, a green dotted line indicated the route, and when he looked at his teammates, their call signs, health status, stress levels, and weapon information were highlighted.
"Did you bring a power bank?" Leng Kai asked.
The burly man turned and pulled out a power bank the size of a smartphone from his belt and handed it over.
With these glasses using full cooperative visual capabilities, the battery would only last three hours.
Leng Kai put the power bank in his pocket, pulled out the charging cable to connect to the glasses, and continued walking for a few more minutes. The entire right lens of Leng Kai’s glasses beca a real-ti aerial view from the drone.
"Got the feed, alert if you see anything," the burly white man called back.
Leng Kai nodded, his glasses’ HUD was now half occupied by the aerial view, so the left side was completely clear, obscuring much information, and he had to rely on his teammates for alerts.
The view in his glasses was an overhead shot of the entire slum—a dense maze of unfinished buildings forming a patch of gray-brown, like a scar on the earth.
The team mbers navigated their way through these gaps, represented by a large red dot indicating their rough location.
Leng Kai slung the ICR rifle over his shoulder, freeing his right hand; he pinched his thumb and forefinger in front of the cara on the glasses twice, and the aerial view zood in a bit, quickly focusing in on a range of ten ters.
Although the image quality had beco rougher, Leng Kai could still make out the figures of his team mbers, as well as the area atop the deserted buildings.
He extended his index and middle fingers together, then moved them left and right. At an altitude of 1200 ters, the spherical cara mounted on the drone’s head began to rotate.
"The rooftop is clear, but there are people on the street, I see twelve ard with rifles. Twenty ters ahead, then sixteen ters to the left," Leng Kai said.
The White Captain imdiately gave a hand signal, and the squad turned into another alley.
Everyone was silent, but Mokrev couldn’t stop shouting.
"Kai, shut his mouth up," the White Captain urged.
Leng Kai pressed Mokrev against the wall with his left hand, and then, a right punch landed directly on his mouth.
"Ah!!"
Mokrev let out a scream, then fell silent. Trembling from the pain, he opened his mouth to spit out a bloodied tooth.
"I’m gonna curse your mother..." Mokrev hadn’t finished cursing when Leng Kai delivered another punch to his abdon, doubling him over and leaving him unable to straighten up his waist.
"Silent now. Let’s go," Leng Kai commanded.
The team continued their advance in the scorching weather, everyone drenched in sweat. With 4 kiloters left to the evacuation point, they ran across another street and dashed into the last cluster of unfinished buildings.
Once again, a shadow swept across the ground; this ti, even the White Captain took notice.
Four team mbers aid their guns upwards, carefully watching, while two others looked front and back.
Leng Kai waved his fingers in mid-air and said, "No targets on the rooftop..."
"Optical camouflage?" the White Captain asked.
"Heat imaging can’t detect anything, it’s not optical camouflage," Leng Kai shook his head.
"Hehehe..." Mokrev started to laugh.
"Who’s following us!?" Leng Kai seized Mokrev’s collar, demanding an answer.
"It’s not that you can’t see them, they just don’t want you to," Mokrev said with laughter.
"There’s soone following us," the White Captain said softly, noticing the dust compacted into the ground.
"It’s not optical camouflage... it’s a ! ignoring... Ugh!!" The female teammate behind Leng Kai had not finished speaking, when her throat suddenly split open, splattering blood all over Leng Kai’s face.
"Open fire on all sides!!!" the White Captain shouted in rage.
Gunshots erupted imdiately.
Leng Kai felt a poke at his waist, but in an instant, he subconsciously reached down and indeed grabbed a wrist.
Looking down, he saw a knife one-third buried into his abdon, an invisible wrist clasped in his hand. Then, the assailant suddenly beca visible, his arm was black.
He was struck hard, flipping to the ground, stunned for 2 seconds, his glasses flung three ters away.
The black assailant stumbled over him, falling to the ground. He fired behind him only to be shot twice in the face, dying instantly.
The White Captain sustained several stabs, bleeding uncontrollably; he reached for his rifle to find the assailant but was seized from behind.
By then, the attackers had all beco visible.
They were several tall black n, seemingly feeble but having the upper hand due to their superpowers.
Leng Kai rolled over, his face kicked, his gun pinned to his chest by a foot, unable to use. He turned his head to the side, seeing another female teammate’s hand being gruesoly chopped off. Three n held her against the wall, incessantly stabbing at the gaps in her bulletproof vest.
The other teammates also perished within monts of the attack, not unloading even a single magazine.
The black n had subdued both the White Captain and Leng Kai, and then, Mokrev patted his sleeve, shifting from his previous hysteria to a confident deanor once again.
He approached the White Captain and said, "Whoever can provide the antidote is the goddamn god here."
"Go to hell..." the White Captain spat blood as he spoke.
Mokrev took a knife, stabbed it into the White Captain’s abdon, then pulled it sideways, causing intestines to spill from the wound.
He fell to his knees and a final kick to the neck laid him flat, motionless on the ground.
Mokrev dropped the knife, turned to Leng Kai pinned on the ground, and sneered, "Take this son of a bitch with us, I’m going to show him what happens to traitors."
