In an apocalyptic world, it’s quite normal to resort to acts of praying to gods and worshipping Buddha, especially in a world that resembled ancient tis where such practices were commonplace. Belief is free, and as long as it didn’t interfere with him, Zheng Yichen would be indifferent. However, now he was facing a completely different situation.
This was not simply offering a pig’s head in ritual, intending to burn so unacceptable offerings, right? If it were paper-made effigies that were being burned, Zheng Yichen might have comnted on the quality of the craftsmanship, but this was certainly not a paper effigy.
Zheng Yichen, observing a man dressed like a charlatan, silently took a gun out from the motorcycle...
"...What are they burning?" Lin Yaoyao asked in confusion. She didn’t have Zheng Yichen’s eyesight, nor did she possess his night vision capabilities, so she couldn’t see the details of the situation in the distance. She only noticed Zheng Yichen pulling out what seed to be a powerful weapon from the motorcycle he was on.
"Sothing that shouldn’t be burned," Zheng Yichen said as he watched the situation. The ritual seed to be sowhat effective. At least Zheng Yichen saw red filants from the sky autonomously circling around the ritual site, leaving the people inside untouched.
But the object of the ritual wasn’t sothing normal—it was a statue resembling Asura, and in the burning pyre, there were charred skeletons. Not too far away were so cages, and inside one of them was a girl who seed younger than Lin Yaoyao.
Another girl...
Suppressing his tangential thoughts, Zheng Yichen aid the gun at the charlatan who was presiding over the ritual. His scope flashed with a lot of parater information, very small numbers. Then the reticle started to float; Zheng Yichen only needed to adjust the barrel aligning the reticle with the fixed marker in the scope.
The benefits of knowing a wealthy woman were now apparent; the sniper rifle he was equipped with had an auto-aim feature.
An expert might not need this gadget, since precision aiming devices can easily break, but Zheng Yichen wasn’t an expert. After aiming at his target, he did not hesitate to pull the trigger; a flash of gunfire sparked in the night.
The speed of the bullet was much faster than the speed of sound. The gun made a loud noise, but by the ti the sound spread, the charlatan’s head had already been split open.
Chunks of Blood Blossom fell into the fire, making the flas burn even more vigorously. The statue fixed in place flashed two red lights in its eyes. Zheng Yichen felt like it was staring at him, and he fiercely glared back, thinking, "Madore, what the hell are you looking at?"
After glaring, he raised his hand and fired another shot. A large shell ejected from the firearm and hit the ground. Cracks appeared on the head of the statue and quickly spread throughout its entire body.
The people who were performing the ritual went completely mad. They had been relying on this evil ritual to avoid being affected by the disaster, regardless of the cost... Initially, they were hesitant, but then they beca numb. After all, there were so many people, as long as they were not affected, it was fine.
To survive, they had already paid a great price, and their bottom line had been broken to the point of nonexistence. They could attack passersby without hesitation, extorting their secrets and using them as offerings for the ritual.
This guaranteed that they wouldn’t be affected by the red mist for one day, and then they could go to a very safe place where they wouldn’t need to perform the ritual anymore.
But now, the god statue that had been slowing down their progress was damaged, and they were left wondering how they were going to survive...
"No, don’t! Think of a way to preserve the statue!" soone scread in terror. After the statue was damaged, they started to see the red filants that had been avoiding them move closer.
Another person, with a cruel expression, quietly approached a luxuriously dressed man. Unnoticed, they slashed at the man’s nape with a firewood knife. The blade was blunt, not killing him in one strike but leaving the man critically injured. The man fell to the ground in shock, convulsing, as his round Jade Pendant was snatched by the attacker.
This secret was extorted from a father and daughter who passed by, who could move within the red mist without being affected. Mutated creatures would also actively avoid them. The father and daughter were not hard by the red mist or the mutant extraordinary creatures, but they were targeted by these people gathered together, worshipping the Evil God.
Exchanging outsiders for a day’s safety didn’t seem wrong to them.
Yet, as the ritual was only halfway done, the lead worshipper was killed, and the idol inexplicably cracked, weakening the protection they had received. If they wanted to live, their only hope was the Jade Pendant that had belonged to the father and daughter!
The red-eyed refugees started fighting over the Jade Pendant. When the lead worshipper was still alive and soone was there to maintain order, they might have had thoughts but didn’t act on them; anyone who dared think about leaving alone would end up being the next day’s kindling.
But now, with the leader gone and the statue damaged, what else was there to say? Getting the Jade Pendant and fleeing was the priority. If you could run far enough, the rest wouldn’t be able to catch up. However, everyone was eyeing that Jade Pendant. Anyone who got it would be torn apart by even more people.
But as the red filants got closer and closer, they couldn’t contain their fear and began to fight desperately for it. It escalated to a point where it was no longer just about the pendant; everyone began to stealthily attack those around them, and the targets were not limited to the person with the Jade Pendant.
