Devourers?
The swordsman who took action glanced at the spot where the twisted air vanished, and imdiately looked in the direction where the guiding light spikes had flown. With the guidance of the light spikes, a concealed Devourer that had not yet revealed itself appeared from far away.
For a mont, the swordsman had no ti to pay attention to Zheng Yichen’s whereabouts; the opponent’s concealnt ability was too formidable. To continue hiding, that was sothing they could not detect.
However, the approaching Devourers posed the greatest threat, at least the person hidden who had spoken out warned them.
The Dusk rcenaries had braced for battle in advance, and as the Devourers got closer, a range of different attacks bombarded them—magic, Sword Qi, saber Qi, and fighting Qi assaults.
They managed to catch the swiftly approaching Devourers off guard, but this barrage had little effect on them thanks to the advantage brought by the Sky Pillar.
They had a strong resistance to external attacks.
"Shouldn’t we help?" Tanshia Filo tugged on Zheng Yichen’s sleeve and asked.
"Later, we’ll just follow the Sky Pillar straight into their world and solve the problem at its root," Zheng Yichen replied, gently patting Tanshia Filo’s head.
Despite saying so, he had still lent so extra assistance by using soul control to release the Eye Pupil of Life. Under its watchful gaze, the Dusk rcenaries imdiately felt their bodies healing.
So were wounded, but their injuries quickly healed completely, without consuming their Life Force. It was a unique type of Blessing.
"Hm? Another expert?!" The swordsman who had ’discovered’ Zheng Yichen swung his long sword, the fierce Sword Qi sealed off the Devourer’s retreat in front of him, and then a layer of blood glow was added to the cold blue Sword Qi.
This sword strike directly pierced through the Devourer’s defenses and through their throat.
The successful swordsman quickly retreated, and after taking a brief mont to catch his breath, he confird that he had received so kind of Blessing linked to Life Force.
With this Blessing, he gained an extra Life Force that allowed him to use techniques that depleted life without worrying about the damage these moves would cause to his body.
Dusk rcenaries, after all, have a few forbidden moves up their sleeves. Things like depleting life or potential are no big deal in the face of Dusk’s top-notch dical services!
The Dusk rcenaries had their own confidence.
But now with an extra layer of Life Force protection, they could afford to use those life-draining forbidden moves early in the battle.
As for whether the master who helped was the one who had previously warned them, that could be discussed later. Right now, the priority was to repel this wave of attacking Devourers.
Devourers varied in strength; they only beca stronger under the Sky Pillar’s Blessing. So of them lacked combat experience compared to the Twilight rcenary Guild.
Even so, this battle was not an easy one. The fact they were found indicated that this place had been exposed.
The Formation prepared here was immovable; until it was completed, the Dusk rcenaries could only directly confront and stop as many Devourers as possible.
Boom—
In the distance, deafening sounds erupted. Zheng Yichen looked over, where an attack like an eight-part light wheel had occurred. A colossal light wheel flew towards the Devouring Sky Pillar and collided violently with it.
Brilliance burst from the point of impact, with the light wheel ultimately shattering under a beam of light that appeared atop the Sky Pillar.
Where the light wheel had touched, a distinct mark was left.
If not for the light pillar’s strike, perhaps that light wheel could have sliced through the Devouring Sky Pillar. However, it was intercepted.
"The Twilight rcenary Guild really does have a strong foundation," Zheng Yichen remarked sincerely, watching the mark left by the light wheel, unsure if the rcenary who released the light wheel was connected to this side.
Using thermal vision, Zheng Yichen checked out the Formation that was being protected. The energy converging in the Formation was not creating the trajectory of a light wheel; it seed to be of a different type.
This made him sowhat excited.
He had never seen the Twilight rcenary Guild in the early stages of battle against Boundary Breakers or Devourers. Moreover, as a Proxy Agent who always played the role of saving the day, he couldn’t help but develop an incorrect impression that the Twilight rcenary Guild mbers were all weak.
In fact, their performance was not bad at all, especially those with large teams. Not to ntion their excellent coordination, the combat power they exhibited far exceeded the average level known to Zheng Yichen.
Just like these Dusk rcenaries here, even with the ’little help’ from Zheng Yichen, they had the capability to hold their ground, though the sacrifice would have been greater, but still within an acceptable range.
With Zheng Yichen’s help, they combined their efforts perfectly and nearly blocked this wave of attacks without any losses.
However, this was also due to the relative weakness of this batch of Devourers.
When even more formidable Devourers appeared later, the outco might not be so simple.
"Let’s go." Zheng Yichen picked up Tanshia Filo and left the place.
Not long after he left, the Dusk rcenaries who had just resolved the combat suddenly felt that extra surge of Life Force disappear. They breathed a sigh of relief, their expressions easing sowhat.
After all, the one who had lent a hand might be a fellow rcenary, but with their identity unknown, they couldn’t be sure of their intentions. If they wanted to collaborate, they should have made their presence known from the start.
Instead of sneakily concealing their tracks like a ghost, the person now gone allowed them to completely relax. It was better to leave these mysterious figures to their lofty acts, rather than deal with unnecessary complications.
They hoped that it was indeed such a hidden master, a powerful figure roaming by who ca across the enemy and lent them a hand, then discreetly retreated without seeking fa or credit.
Yes, that’s the kind of peer they appreciated...
"Hurry and get ready; our position has been exposed, and the Devourers won’t go easy on us!" bellowed a Dusk rcenary, who then stuffed a few dicinal pills into his mouth, hastening to recover his condition.
They would need at least another two hours here. During this period, the attacks from the Devourers wouldn’t be few, but since the attack Formations were already set up, they couldn’t just give up.
Even though it’s unlikely that these things would directly destroy the Devouring Sky Pillar, as long as they can inflict enough damage on it, that would be considered ’scoring points.’
The Dusk also recognized such acts of scoring, as when they were doing it here, they were truly putting in their effort and risking their lives. It wasn’t like they were scoring points on purpose, but rather, it was an inevitable ’compromise.’
If possible, they also wanted their prepared attack Formations to blow up the Devouring Sky Pillar in one go.
However, that was not achievable. But once the Devouring Sky Pillar was damaged, its efficiency would inevitably drop, and securing enough ti would also be considered a contribution.
If the devouring efficiency of that thing decreased, they’d have more ti to set up stronger Formations to attack, thus increasing the probability of blowing up the Devouring Sky Pillar.
This was a tug of war, gradually enlarging their advantage through such pulling, otherwise, the group of Devourers was just too difficult to fight.
The battle against the Devourers is not combat, but war.
Supported by the Devouring Sky Pillar, the Devourers can directly render useless the special powers within this world, significantly impacting the world’s creatures, while the Devouring Faction can exert their strength normally.
From the outset, their advantage was the greatest. How can one fight without tugging?
Launching a full-scale attack as soon as the Devouring Sky Pillar hasn’t caused deep impact on this world?
Forget it, the Dusk rcenaries aren’t nurous enough. As for the local forces... even if they are inford of the dangers of the Devouring Faction, can we expect them to gather on a large scale in a very short ti?
Can we expect them to fully believe the Dusk rcenaries?
Even if they do believe, it’s not certain they will act without reservations. They would first send people to investigate, and then start gathering in large numbers. By the ti several days pass, it might be too late, and then those people would regret not taking the Dusk rcenaries’ words seriously from the start.
The experienced Dusk rcenaries had seen too much of this kind of situation. To put it nicely, it was being sufficiently wary of a stranger’s words, and there was nothing wrong with such behavior.
But... when the crisis arises, they just have to bear the consequences. Initially, so new Dusk rcenaries were helpless and conflicted over this, but as ti passed, they got used to it, they understood.
How the natives decide is their business. The Dusk rcenaries did everything they should have done, and having a clear conscience was enough.
This ti, the world’s response was quite rapid. They managed to gather in large numbers within two days, thus the Dusk rcenaries here were also willing to contribute more.
There is great hope this ti, plus the world was already aware of the existence of Dusk rcenaries, which allowed for perfect cooperation with the local military, enabling coordinated combat between the Twilight rcenaries and the army.
More importantly, the local commander wasn’t the kind of fool who believed they could control everything; knowing about the Dusk rcenaries, they didn’t try to make them obey orders or take commands.
Instead, while they were in action, the local army would cooperate as much as possible, which made the rcenaries quite comfortable.
While the rcenaries were resting, the local army arrived, and the soldiers swiftly set up a defensive position. They hadn’t called for reinforcents before when they needed to conceal their location, but now that they were exposed, it would be quite the oversight not to call for support given the local army’s readiness...
There’s strength in numbers. Even though the individual prowess of these soldiers was not formidable, people in this world were trained in combat, so "not strong" was only relative to the Dusk rcenaries; these soldiers were actually quite powerful.
Every soldier present, once they activated Vajra Body, could withstand bullets with their flesh. In any other world, they would be considered top-notch Super Warriors.
As for Zheng Yichen, he brought Tanshia Filo to another uninhabited area. He had previously been worried about alarming the Devouring Faction, but after seeing how effective the Dusk rcenaries were in the early stages of the conflict, he was reassured.
He also understood why the Proxy Agents left behind so few Dusk rcenaries as a minimum guarantee. It wasn’t that they weren’t persistent, but that such a large investnt in the early stage didn’t lead to victory, so the later stages were even less hopeful.
Later issues will be dealt with later. For now, Zheng Yichen reached out and smashed open the ground, ready to search for the hidden roots of the Devouring Sky Pillar.
It had been a long ti since he last tasted this thing.
