“Ling Ning, I think this dish is pretty good. You should try it.”
“Ling Ning, try this one too.”
At a restaurant, Ling Ning stared in exasperation at her bowl, which was nearly overflowing with food. Ever since the dishes started arriving, the two people with her kept piling food into her bowl. Honestly, she hadn’t even eaten much herself yet—were they trying to make her burst?
“Uh, I think this is plenty for now. You two should eat as well. I’ll help myself,” Ling Ning said cautiously.
“Huh? Well, okay then.”
Finally, the two stopped adding food to her bowl, and Ling Ning breathed a sigh of relief. However, the atmosphere at the table felt a bit off. Although both won were smiling, their eyes had a chilling coldness that made Ling Ning feel like she was in the presence of legendary bosses who could kill with a re glance.
After a brief, tense silence, Zhou Xiaoxiao suddenly spoke. “Ling Ning, I still rember the first ti you ca to the café. You were so shy in that maid outfit. But now, you’ve turned into a seasoned pro. Ti really flies, doesn’t it?”
“It just took so getting used to,” Ling Ning replied, a faint smile tugging at her lips as mories of her early days in this world resurfaced.
Hearing their conversation, Su Ya raised an eyebrow. She suspected Zhou Xiaoxiao was bringing this up to subtly assert that she had known Ling Ning longer.
After a brief mont of thought, Su Ya’s face lit up with a radiant smile. She turned to Ling Ning and said, “Ling Ning, do you rember when I ntioned a trial dating period? I think it’s about ti you got an official promotion.”
Ling Ning blinked in surprise. Didn’t Su Ya declare the trial period over so ti ago? Why bring it up again now? And how was she supposed to respond to this?
“Ling Ning, my parents want to et you. I told them I’m dating you,” Su Ya added with a sly grin.
Ling Ning felt like spitting blood. This topic again? She vaguely recalled Zhou Xiaoxiao saying sothing similar at her study session. Why bring it up now?
As the two won continued bringing up topics to one-up each other, Ling Ning felt like she was being roasted over a slow fla. Several tis, she even saw them rolling up their sleeves. Thankfully, her diplomatic efforts managed to keep things relatively peaceful—for now.
Lunch ended without any outright explosions, though the undercurrent of tension was palpable.
As they left the restaurant, Su Ya cast a glance at Zhou Xiaoxiao and remarked, “If I’m not mistaken, Zhou Xiaoxiao, aren’t you in your third year of high school? Should you really be so carefree right now?”
“I agree, I probably shouldn’t be. Ling Ning, why don’t you co to my house and help study?”
“Alright, hold it right there!” Ling Ning interjected quickly. “I feel like going to the café right now. Do you want to co along?”
“Wherever Ling Ning goes, I’ll follow~”
“Why not? Let’s go.”
With their answers settled, Ling Ning flagged down a taxi. On the ride to the café, the two began debating over who should sit next to Ling Ning.
In the end, the three of them ended up in the back seat, with Ling Ning sandwiched in the middle. She sighed, feeling utterly resigned to her fate.
As they neared the café, Ling Ning began to question why she even decided to go there. Her apprentice was working there, as was Li Si. And if Ye Xuan and Xia You showed up, she might be in for an even bigger headache.
Still, it probably wouldn’t be that bad. At least she could hide near Chu ngyao if things got out of hand.
Traffic was smooth, and they soon arrived at the café. Chu ngyao, who was manning the counter, bead when she saw them enter. “Well, if it isn’t my lovely employees! Is this a team shift?”
“No, no. I’m just here to slack off. These two are the ones here to work.”
Both Su Ya and Zhou Xiaoxiao gaped at her in disbelief. Since when did they agree to work? How did things end up like this?
Despite claiming she was there to slack off, Ling Ning still changed into her maid uniform.
Noticing the ring on Chu ngyao’s finger, Ling Ning was reminded of her proposal to Luo Xiaoyu. Judging by Chu ngyao’s radiant smile, things seed to be going well for her.
“So, now that you’re engaged, when’s the wedding?”
“Soon. I’m just picking a date.”
Ling Ning’s gaze landed on so bruises on Chu ngyao’s hand, as if she’d been in a fight. She couldn’t fathom anyone being able to land a hit on Chu ngyao.
Sensing Ling Ning’s curiosity, Chu ngyao smiled wryly and explained, “A couple of days ago, I told my dad about the wedding, and sohow, we ended up fighting. The old man didn’t hold back. At least he didn’t aim for my face.”
Recalling the incident, Chu ngyao felt her muscles ache all over again.
Ling Ning chuckled dryly, imagining Chu ngyao’s family might all be as fierce as she was. Well, except for Chu Feng, who seed gentler—though probably not by much.
“Anyway, I’m picking an auspicious date. Got any suggestions?”
“I’m not really good with this stuff. But if you need a bridesmaid, I might be up for it.”
“You as a bridesmaid? That sounds perfect! I’m not inviting too many people—just so close friends,” Chu ngyao said nonchalantly.
“This is your wedding. Should you really be so casual about it?”
“Hey, we’ve already registered, and everything else is done. The wedding’s just a formality. If it were up to Xiaoyu, she’d rather spend the ti gaming than bother with all this.”
Ling Ning fell silent. Knowing Luo Xiaoyu’s personality, she could absolutely see that happening.
“Anyway, let know if you need my help. I’ll go lend a hand now.”
