Reaper nudged the carcass with his boot, gripping his machete tighter.
“That was new.”
Leon scanned the ruins ahead, his pulse still hamring from the fight.
“We need to move before another one shows up.”
But Evelyn wasn’t listening.
Her eyes were locked on the black tendrils slithering out of the Apex’s wound, curling and pulsing as if still alive.
“Leon…” she whispered, stepping back.
Before anyone could react, the tendrils shot outward, latching onto the remains of a nearby infected corpse.
The dead flesh twitched violently—then began to change.
“It’s not dead!” Mia scread.
The Apex’s mutation was spreading.
The infected body contorted, bones snapping as the virus rewrote its structure.
Its skin darkened, stretched too tight over mutated sinew and expanding claws.
Its skull cracked open, revealing fresh rows of jagged fangs.
Then it moved.
Faster than anything they had ever seen.
Lucas fired—but the creature dodged.
It blurred past them, its speed unnatural, leaving only a streak of black mist in its wake.
“Shit, it’s adapting!” Samantha shouted.
The thing lunged at Reaper.
He barely had ti to raise his machete before it was on him, claws slamming him into the pavent.
Leon fired two shots—both missed.
The creature’s tongue lashed out, wrapping around Reaper’s throat.
Evelyn moved without thinking.
She grabbed a broken tal pipe and ramd it into the beast’s core.
The creature screeched—a sound that sent chills up their spines.
Reaper gasped for air as the tendrils retracted.
He shoved the beast back and sliced clean through its arm.
The thing staggered—for a second.
Then, its severed limb twitched and grew back.
“Nothing’s stopping this thing,” Mia whispered.
Evelyn’s mind raced.
They needed fire.
Leon realized it too.
“Gas leak.
The wreckage behind us—it’s flammable.”
Samantha pulled the pin on a flare grenade.
“Light it up.”
The creature snarled and lunged—just as Samantha threw the flare.
A wall of fire erupted, swallowing the beast whole.
It screeched, its body convulsing, flesh lting.
The parasite burned, unable to adapt fast enough.
Then, silence.
The charred corpse collapsed into a smoldering heap.
The team stood there, panting, smoke rising around them.
Lucas wiped his brow.
“Tell that was the last of them.”
Evelyn stared at the blackened remains, heart pounding.
“The Devourer is evolving,” she murmured.
“And we’re running out of ways to stop it.”
Leon reloaded his rifle, his expression grim.
“Then we better find one—before it finds us.”
