The low hum of machinery reverberated through the dimly lit room as Zara stood by the window, her mind racing. Outside, the Vanguard Collective's soldiers moved like clockwork, their rigid discipline a constant reminder of how precarious her situation was. Behind her, Callum limped into the room, fresh from the d bay, his bandages peeking out from under his torn shirt.

"Not exactly the warm welco I was hoping for," Callum muttered, dropping into a chair with a wince.

Zara turned to face him, her expression unreadable. "This place feels off," she said, her voice low. "Too organized. Too controlled. It's not a sanctuary—it's a fortress."

Callum nodded, his eyes drifting to the door. "Yeah, and that Commander Kade guy? He gives the creeps. Feels like he knows more about us than he's letting on."

Before Zara could reply, the door swung open, and Captain Renna stepped in, her presence as imposing as ever. "Kade wants to see you both. Now," she said, her tone leaving no room for argunt.

They were led through a labyrinth of steel corridors until they reached Kade's office. The man himself was waiting, leaning against his desk with a file in hand. He looked up as they entered, a faint smirk playing on his lips.

"Ah, Zara. Callum," he said, gesturing for them to sit. "Let's cut to the chase. You're valuable assets, and I intend to put you to good use."

"Assets?" Zara echoed, her tone sharp. "We're not soldiers, and we're definitely not signing up for your little army."

Kade chuckled, his eyes narrowing. "Oh, I'm not asking. You see, Ravenwood thrives because everyone contributes. And with your skills—tactical expertise, survival instincts—you'll contribute a great deal."

Zara crossed her arms, her jaw tightening. "And if we refuse?" Enjoy new tales from My Virtual Library Empire

Kade's smile didn't falter. "You won't. Because outside these walls, it's death. And in here, it's survival. Your choice."

The room fell silent, tension crackling in the air. Zara t Kade's gaze, her mind working overti. She knew his type—manipulative, calculating, and dangerous. But for now, she needed to play along.

"Fine," she said finally. "What do you want us to do?"

Kade's smile widened. "There's a supply run leaving tomorrow at dawn. High risk, but essential. You'll lead it."

Callum shot Zara a worried look, but she ignored him, her focus on Kade. "And if we succeed?"

"Then you've earned your place here," Kade replied smoothly. "Fail, and... well, let's not dwell on that."

As they were escorted back to their quarters, Callum grabbed Zara's arm. "This is a setup," he hissed. "He's testing us—or worse."

"I know," Zara said quietly. "But we need to buy ti. Play their ga, for now."

That night, as Zara prepared for the mission, she couldn't shake the feeling that Kade was watching, waiting for her to slip. She glanced at Callum, who was sharpening his blade, his face set with determination.

"Tomorrow," she whispered, "we figure out who's really in control."
