Chapter 1208: Story 1208: The Girl Who Escaped

INT. SECTOR 9 — MAINTENANCE TUNNELS — NIGHT

The shaft descended into silence. Lena’s boots echoed softly as she led Dr. Rho and the containnt pod down a rusted catwalk. Overhead, distant bangs and tallic screams reminded them what they’d left behind.

LENA (quietly):

“If Jason’s still alive… he bought us ti.”

DR. RHO:

“And we waste none of it.”

Suddenly, a ventilation panel popped loose nearby, and a girl—no older than thirteen—dropped from the shadows, filthy, barefoot, and gripping a sharpened piece of rebar.

GIRL (feral):

“Who sent you?! You’re not Harbingers!”

Lena raised her hands calmly.

LENA:

“We’re not with them. We’re running from them.”

The girl hesitated. Her eyes flicked to the pod.

GIRL:

“Is she… still in there?”

DR. RHO (cautious):

“You know about her?”

GIRL:

“She sings when it’s quiet. Not with words… with pain.”

She turned and beckoned them into a side tunnel.

INT. ABANDONED MAINTENANCE ROOM — LATER

By flickering lantern light, the girl unrolled a hand-drawn map on torn plastic—vent routes, barricaded doors, Harbinger patrols marked in red.

LENA (amazed):

“You made all this?”

GIRL:

“I escaped the holding pens four days ago. My family didn’t make it. I hid. Watched. Learned.”

DR. RHO:

“What’s your na?”

She looked up, wary.

GIRL:

“Everyone just called ‘Mouse.’ I bit a guard once.”

LENA (smiling faintly):

“Mouse… we’re trying to reach a signal tower. Warn the outside world.”

Mouse pointed to a circled tower icon.

MOUSE:

“That’s north, through the old aqueduct. It’s guarded. But there’s a forgotten route underground—an overflow pipe. Only I know it.”

DR. RHO:

“If we get this ssage out, we can bring help. Real help.”

Mouse’s face hardened.

MOUSE:

“No one’s coming. I’ve heard the transmissions. You don’t know what’s outside anymore. But… I’ll still help you.”

Suddenly, a distant alarm sounded. The walls shook.

LENA:

“They found the shaft. Jason’s gone or worse.”

DR. RHO (clutching the pod):

“We move. Now.”

INT. OVERFLOW PIPE — MINUTES LATER

The trio squeezed through narrow tunnels, water sloshing at their ankles. Mouse led fearlessly, crawling through tight bends and beneath rusted grates.

Behind them, the pod began to hum faintly. The interior lights flickered blue.

LENA (whispering):

“She’s waking up.”

DR. RHO (tense):

“She senses sothing. Or soone.”

Suddenly, ahead—light. The exit. Mouse rushed forward and pulled a sewer grate aside.

But as Lena erged, she froze. Figures stood silhouetted in the mist—cloaked, armored… Harbingers.

MOUSE (panicking):

“No… no, this wasn’t marked—this wasn’t—”

A flashbang exploded.

WHITE OUT.

INT. HARBRINGER STAGING SITE — LATER

Lena awoke tied to a chair. Dr. Rho was unconscious. The pod sat undisturbed. Mouse was nowhere in sight.

A voice echoed through the dark.

“You thought you escaped. But she’s ant to return to us.”

A monitor flickered on. Mouse stared back—surrounded by Harbingers. Her face blank, eyes glazed.

She hadn’t been captured.

She had led them there.
