"Co, good girl. Repeat what you said in my office. And tell us—who exactly organized this?"
Umbridge shoved Marietta forward.
Then she added with a smile toward Fudge,
"Minister, her mother is Mrs. Edgecombe from the Ministry—Magical Transportation Departnt, Floo Network Office. She's been helping us monitor the Hogwarts fireplaces…"
"Well then, with a mother, a wife, and a daughter to think of! Good girl, speak quickly!"
Fudge praised her while urging her on.
Marietta looked into Darren's eyes. Suddenly, she scread and covered her eyes tightly with her hands.
"Hurry up! Hurry up and tell everyone what you said when you ca into my office today!"
Umbridge shouted.
But Marietta only cried louder, burying her face in her robes.
Fudge frowned.
"Her face…"
"This young lady ca into my office and told she wanted to report sothing—sothing that would benefit . She said there was a place called the Room of Requirent. And the mont she said that, the curse on her face activated. After that, she couldn't say another word…"
Umbridge said loudly.
Marietta let out another wail of pain.
Fudge said impatiently, "Can't you remove this curse?"
"We don't have the conditions for that at the mont…"
Umbridge said in frustration. She couldn't even break Hermione's curse.
Still, she forced herself to continue,
"If she can't speak, then I'll speak for her. Minister, do you rember the incident I reported to you last October…"
She was referring to Harry and the others gathering at the Hog's Head. At the ti, Dumbledore had argued that the decree hadn't yet taken effect and demanded proof that Darren had organized anything after that.
Umbridge pointed straight at Marietta.
She said viciously, "Child, if you did continue holding etings, just nod your head. I don't think you're even capable of doing that, are you?"
Harry's heart leapt into his throat.
He saw Darren close his eyes in frustration.
Harry was already preparing himself—if Darren was expelled, he wouldn't let him end up on the streets no matter what.
Then he heard a strange sound. It seed like Fawkes's cry.
Everyone looked on.
Fudge stared at Marietta.
"You tell us—did those later gatherings still exist?"
Marietta's gaze went blank.
She whispered,
"No… we never held that kind of gathering again."
Harry saw Darren's eyes fly open in shock.
It seed even Marietta herself hadn't expected to say that.
Darren, however, appeared to believe that she had spoken out of conscience. He even gave her a gentle, reassuring smile.
Harry smiled helplessly.
Pure Darren.
He was just about to warn him—
When Umbridge suddenly grabbed Marietta and shook her violently.
Darren angrily flicked his wand, blasting Umbridge away.
"What are you doing?" he snapped. "Bullying an unard girl just because she spoke in our favor?"
Umbridge opened her mouth to retort.
But when she saw Darren raise his wand again, she subconsciously staggered back in fear.
Even the Aurors present fell silent.
"Well, Dolores, I think we still have other evidence. As long as we can prove they were gathering here tonight!"
Fudge said briskly.
Umbridge imdiately looked startled—then her face twisted into a look of glee.
She pulled a piece of parchnt from her pocket and handed it to Fudge.
"I asked Mr. Filch to check for anything missing," she said smugly. "And he found this."
"Just this list—nas included—should be enough to send soone to Azkaban!"
Fudge took the parchnt.
He grinned broadly and passed it to Dumbledore.
"D.A. … Dumbledore's Army…"
Darren imdiately said, "It's Darren's Army. It's my army. It has nothing to do with Headmaster Dumbledore!"
Dumbledore laughed.
He patted Darren on the shoulder.
"Don't be afraid."
Then he looked at Fudge.
"That's right. Dumbledore's Army—it's my army."
Fudge's eyes lit up.
He turned to Kingsley and Dawlish beside him and exclaid,
"You hear that? He admitted it! Take him to Azkaban!"
The man called Dawlish quietly reached for his wand.
Dumbledore scoffed.
"Dawlish, you're a fine Auror. Do you really think you can catch ?"
"And do you think you can handle all of us—, Dolores, Kingsley, and Dawlish?"
Fudge sneered.
Darren stepped in front of Dumbledore.
He said softly but firmly,
"Then there's still ."
"Enough!"
Fudge shouted.
A flash of silver light erupted.
Darren stunned Fudge.
Then he dashed in front of Harry, knocking him aside, and another jet of red light struck Umbridge.
Umbridge collapsed. Dumbledore had already dealt with Dawlish.
Darren looked toward Marietta.
She was being escorted by Professor McGonagall, her expression still dazed and confused.
Darren hesitated.
"Didn't she… speak out of conscience?"
"How could she possibly do that?" Kingsley said, walking over with admiration in his eyes. "I modified her mory. Good boy—you were incredible."
Dumbledore laughed.
Grinning as if he were praising himself, he said cheerfully,
"Powerful, yes—but far too trusting. You really believed soone would suddenly confess out of conscience. This child… I worry that one day he'll die because he trusted others too much."
Dumbledore continued, then turned to Kingsley.
"Looks like I'll need to give you a little spell as well."
Kingsley resisted a few tis—then collapsed to the ground.
Dumbledore went on,
"In a mont, you'll all pretend to be unconscious. I'll also need to adjust their mories."
"They can't rember that Darren was involved. He still needs to stay at Hogwarts. I, on the other hand, will have to leave the school—but don't worry. They'll beg to co back eventually."
"I won't be idle while I'm gone. I'll simply find a reason to leave."
"Take care. Be careful."
Dumbledore hugged Darren.
Then he looked at Harry.
"Harry, you must learn Occluncy as soon as possible. I know you're still having nightmares—you need to control yourself."
"And also, I've known for a long ti that you were holding D.A. etings. After all, Darren and I practiced Occluncy together for quite so ti."
Harry nodded.
At that mont, he felt his scar flare with sharp pain.
Sothing was trying to reach Dumbledore.
He finally understood why Dumbledore hadn't hugged him…
