Nicklaus picked up his phone the mont he stepped out of his bathroom. The tight cold unpleasant scowl on his face softened into a peaceful smile the mont he saw Arissa’s na displayed on his phone.
He listened to his ringing phone from the bathroom and hated the sound of it, thinking it might be a call from one of his business partners.
Not wasting a second more, he went into his call log and called Arissa. Sitting on his bed drying his hair with a towel, he patiently waited for her to pick up.
"Nick," Arissa replied from the other end after a ring.
"Love," her quick reply made Nicklaus’ lips curl upward into a calm smile. His face softened the more when he heard her soothing voice.
Arissa sniffed from the other end. She stood up from the hammock chair and found her way back into the nursery room.
"Love_"
"Nick are you all right?" Arissa cut him off. Her voice trembled and Nicklaus caught the sound. His peaceful expression returned to a slight frown.
His eyes turned shades darker and he balled his fist, "Arissa, speak to . What happened?" his voice ca out soft but firm. He stood up from the bed walked towards his floor-to-ceiling window and set his deep dark eyes into the streets of China.
Arissa’s legs wobbled where she stood. Unable to keep up with her scattered emotions, she relaxed on the nearby couch and took in a deep breath.
"Love?" Nicklaus’ voice ca out gently, "Why can’t you sleep? Tell , what bothers you?"
Arissa smiled, "It’s nothing. Why do you think I’m bothered?" She asked, sounding chill while trying to bring up a ans to ask him about what that voice note said.
Nicklaus’s brows tightened, "I don’t think you’re bothered baby, I know you are. Tell what disturbs the queen herself, and be rest assured that this loyal knight of hers would make sure to take it away," he tried his best to coax her into opening up to him.
Arissa chuckled. Her eyes brightened, relieving a bit of the stress the voicemail ca with.
Arissa looked down at her stomach. She rubbed her stomach gently and smiled, "I’m fine," she assured him.
Nicklaus’s brows raised in suspicion. This wasn’t how she sounded earlier and now, she sounded as if she was trying to move them out of the main topic.
"You sound as if you want to be sure of sothing," Nicklaus said retiring to his bed. He flipped back into his seat, patiently waiting.
"Nothing. I," Arissa stamred, "Nothing. I just wanted to hear your voice once more before I end the day," she said, trying to take Nicklaus’s mind off his growing suspicion.
"Arissa?" Frustration welled up in Nicklaus’s eyes, and he tightened his grip on his phone. She was hiding sothing from him. The emotions he felt from her sold her off.
"I...." Arissa attempted to speak but ended up shutting up instead. She took notice of his voice, especially how he called her na so sternly.
Nicklaus’s eyes fell when she cut herself off so quickly. Prerelaxed by her actions, he tried to calm her down, "It’s okay Love. I want you to take a deep breath before saying any other word. I’ll be here waiting until you’re ready to talk to . And mind you I won’t hang up. I’ll wait on this call until you’re ready,"
Arissa went silent and so did everything around them. She tried to smile but rather, she ended up letting a tear escape her eyes.
"Is there sothing you want and you think I can’t do it? What’s that thing you want?" He went on to ask.
Arissa shook her head at the other end but said nothing. More tears rolled down from her eyes as the words from the phone call replayed in her mory.
"Or do you want to co down to China?" Nicklaus joked. A small smile graced his face at the thought of her being beside him.
Arissa laughed.
Nicklaus laughed with her, "And there she goes. The most beautiful queen to ever Grace the world is laughing again. And you know what they say... if you can make her smile and laugh, you can make her ass_"
"Stop," Arissa cut him off. She laughed hard at the thought of what he was about to say. She can’t stand listening to him being so cheesy tonight.
Nicklaus chuckled, "Are you ready now?"
Arissa shut her eyes. She tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear and smiled, "I am," she agreed and parted her eyes.
Nicklaus’s heart rejoiced at the growing progress. His heart lted as happiness covered him. He couldn’t help it as he muttered softly under his breath.
He smiled. "Okay, let’s go,"
Deciding to trust him as she should, Arissa went on to tell him about everything. She planned to keep everything away from him so he would relax but this wasn’t what she should keep away from him.
Nicklaus’s jaw clenched when he heard everything Arissa said. His expression went back from calm to cold, and from dark to blank.
The blood in his veins ran cold. His thinking beca straight and his eyes calculating. His mind forgot who he was speaking to and he ended up using a cold voice on her. "Did you plan to co to China? Was that why you refused to tell at first?"
Arissa gulped, "Nick,"
Nicklaus imagined sothing bad happened to her and he beca more furious. His blood boiled and he thundered at her, "TALK TO , ARISSA. DID YOU FORGET ABOUT KEEPING YOURSELF SAFE? HOW ABOUT OUR CHILD? HAVE YOU FORGOTTEN THAT YOU’RE PREGNANT_"
"Don’t speak to that way," Arissa cut him off, "I am the one carrying our child and I can never forget I’m pregnant when the baby grows in ."
Nicklaus swallowed. He ran his fingers through his hair and tears left his eyes, "I’m sorry," he apologized imdiately.
He wiped his tears from his eyes and forced himself to be okay again.
"Nick," Arissa’s voice softened, "I love you and I want you to know I always will. I can’t stay in peace knowing you’re out there," she let out a sigh at the end.
Nicklaus’s eyes reddened as he fought back his tears. He folded his lips to force out s smile of comfort for her... and for himself.
"Shuu baby. You’re fine and that’s all that matters. Now go to bed. You have to sleep and so do my little princess. I promise to return ho as early as possible," he tried comforting her
"What about your c_"
"Take a rest Love. We’ll talk about that tomorrow," he promised, "How about that?"
"Okay," Arissa forcefully nodded in agreent. She believed him more than she would ever believe herself.
