Chapter 28
Beatrice~
I was still lost in my thoughts, my mind spiraling through years of tornt and pain, when a sudden knock on the door startled . I froze. My heart pounded against my ribs, a cold wave of fear washing over .
Who could it be?
Slowly, I rose to my feet, wiping my damp palms on the fabric of my dress. Maybe it was just a neighbor. Maybe it was nothing. But as I reached for the doorknob and pulled it open, my breath hitched.
The air was sucked out of my lungs.
Standing on the other side of the door, with his arrogant smirk and piercing gaze, was the devil himself. Declan.
Panic shot through . My instincts scread at to shut the door, to lock him out. I tried—desperately, frantically—but I wasn't fast enough.
With a brutal shove, Declan forced his way inside, slamming the door open so hard that I stumbled backward. The impact sent crashing onto the hard wooden floor, pain shooting up my spine as I gasped.
A low chuckle rumbled from him as he shut the door behind him.
I gritted my teeth, pushing myself up slightly. "What the hell are you doing here?" I demanded, wincing as I clutched my arm. "I did everything you asked. Everything! What more do you want from ?"
He crouched down in front of , his tall fra looming over like a shadow of death. His hand shot out, fingers clamping around my jaw with a painful grip, forcing to look at him.
I flinched, a sharp groan escaping my lips as his nails dug into my skin.
"Let go, Declan!" I spat, trying to pry his hand off my face, but his grip was like iron.
Declan only smirked, tilting his head slightly. "You always look so beautiful when you're afraid, Beatrice," he murmured. "You should know better by now—you don't get to demand anything from ."
Tears burned behind my eyes, but I refused to let them fall. I wouldn't give him that satisfaction.
"I told Tyler to co to your wedding," I said, my voice trembling with fury. "I convinced him to stand as your best man. I made him stop seeing you as a beast —just like you wanted. What else do you want from , Declan?"
He didn't answer imdiately. Instead, he released roughly, sending sprawling backward. My head hit the floor with a dull thud, and a sharp pain radiated through my skull.
I clutched my head, biting back a cry. Why? Why did he always have to use violence? Why did he always have to remind that he was stronger, that I was powerless against him?
My breath ca in ragged gasps as I glared up at him. "You promised," I said through gritted teeth. "You swore you wouldn't hurt again."
Declan laughed. A cold, heartless laugh that sent a chill down my spine.
"You really believed that, didn't you?" He shook his head mockingly. "Oh, Beatrice... you're still so naïve."
My stomach twisted with dread. "What do you want now?" I asked, barely above a whisper.
His expression darkened, his eyes gleaming with a dangerous light. "I want Tyler," he said simply.
The room spun.
My breath caught in my throat. "No," I whispered, shaking my head in disbelief. "No, you can't—you promised—"
"Promises change," Declan cut in sharply. "I want my son. And you're going to make sure he cos with willingly."
My entire body trembled. "I'd rather die."
Declan clicked his tongue. "I thought you'd say that." He sighed as if disappointed, then leaned in closer. "But we both know you're not willing to die, Beatrice. You're too scared. And besides—" he paused, his smirk widening—"you wouldn't leave Tyler behind, would you?"
I clenched my fists, fury and helplessness clawing at my chest. "I raised him," I hissed. "I protected him when you abandoned us! And now you think you can just take him away?"
"Tyler needs now," Declan said, his voice dripping with arrogance. "He has enemies, Beatrice. My enemies. They will co for him. And you? You won't be able to protect him."
I scoffed despite the fear gnawing at . "And you think you can protect him?"
Declan's gaze darkened. "Yes. Because unlike you, I have power. I have connections. I have control."
A bitter laugh escaped my lips. "You don't want to protect him," I accused. "You just want to own him. Like you tried to own ."
Declan said nothing for a long mont. Then, he let out a slow exhale, shaking his head. "It doesn't matter what you think, Beatrice. You have two choices—convince Tyler to leave with , or watch as I take him by force. And trust , if I have to do it my way, you will regret it."
A heavy silence hung between us.
My heart pounded violently, fear choking . But before I could respond, a knock on the door cut through the air.
My stomach dropped.
Tyler.
Declan smirked. "Right on ti."
Panic surged through my veins. I scrambled to my feet, pushing past Declan and rushing to the door. I cracked it open just enough to see Tyler standing there, Amara beside him.
My son's eyes held concern as he took in my appearance. "Thank goodness you aren't asleep."
I swallowed hard, forcing a smile even as my heart shattered inside my chest.
"Yes, sweetheart," I said softly. "I was just... resting but hasn't zoned off.
I stepped aside, letting them in, but my mind was screaming.
I turned around and noticed that Declan was no where to be found.
He must have hide imdiately
At least he made that easy for
Tyler carried Amara in his arms, his steps careful as he brought her into the room. I watched as he gently placed her onto the bed, brushing a stray lock of hair from her face. She stirred slightly but didn't wake, her exhaustion evident.
My heart clenched.
Declan's words echoed in my mind.
"He has enemies now. All my enemies are his."
Tyler wasn't safe.
I squeezed my hands into fists, my nails biting into my palms. I couldn't keep this to myself—not when it involved Tyler's safety. I had to tell him.
I started up a conversation to lighten the mood so Tyler wouldn't notice that sothing was wrong.
I began telling him about his father's enemy so he wouldn't flare up if I tell him his father ca
A heavy silence stretched between us.
Then, after a mont, Tyler let out a slow breath. "We were ambushed."
My stomach dropped.
For a second, I couldn't breathe.
The room blurred, my chest tightening with panic. Ambushed? My worst fears were becoming real.
Declan was right, Tyler wasn't safe here
And no matter how much it broke .....
I had no choice but to let him go.
