Chapter 554: Chapter 554: There’s News Chapter 554: Chapter 554: There’s News “How did he find out?”

Qiao Yun said, “The organization that had previously invaded the research institute approached him.”

Qiao Xun’s brows tightened at the center, silent on the other end of the phone for quite a while.

It was so long that Qiao Yun thought there might be a problem with the signal.

“Uncle?”

“Hmm…”

Qiao Xun snapped back to attention, inexplicably finding his throat a bit dry. He took a sip of water and, in a joking tone, said, “Qiaoqiao, have you never thought of perfecting this plan? There are many people in the world struggling on the brink of death who need your research.”

Qiao Yun didn’t respond, seemingly in thought.

Qiao Xun continued, “Right now, it’s just the Zhou Family. If more people like that show up later, I’m afraid you will really be in danger. The ‘New Life Project’ might harm you. It might be better to make it public.”

Qiao Yun spoke unhurriedly, “There’s no way to do that.”

Qiao Xun, sowhat puzzled, “Does ‘no way’ an it can’t be made public, or sothing else?”

Qiao Yun, however, said, “I’m not afraid of danger, but it can’t be made public.”

In her mind, she thought that if the plan were truly made public, then ‘Number One’ would have to be cut open, after all, ‘Number One’ was the core of the entire research. But no one should know about ‘Number One’ yet, otherwise they would not be coming to her.

Qiao Yun didn’t share Qiao Xun’s grand ideals; she just wanted to live a good life as a person. As for the troubles that ca knocking, she had never been worried.

Financial resources, intellect, they would be her shield.

Qiao Xun sighed, “It’s fine if you don’t want to make it public. No matter what happens, your uncle will always protect you.”

Qiao Yun was sowhat confused.

This matter really had nothing to do with her uncle; he didn’t need to protect her.

“Thank you, Uncle.”

Qiao Yun still dutifully expressed her gratitude.

Qiao Xun hung up the phone and leaned back in his chair, his gaze dark and steady on the ceiling as if deep in thought or perhaps thinking of nothing at all.

After a while, he mumbled to himself, “Still as stubborn as ever.”

He took out a picture fra from the drawer, his thumb caressing over the face of a youthfully radiant woman clad in mountaineering gear in the photo, and only then did his mood begin to settle.

A mont later, Qiao Xun put down the fra, stood up from his chair, and went to find his father, who was downstairs tending to the garden flowers.

“Dad, let help you.”

He rolled up his sleeves as he spoke, beginning to help the old man shovel soil bit by bit.

Qiao Xun’s hands were very white, appearing even more so against the dark soil.

“You know how to do it right. Others have tried to help before, nearly drove mad,” Qiao Se huffed.

Qiao Xun said with a smile, “They are all just researchers, how could they understand these things.”

“That’s because they are clumsy. You understand; you really are my son,”

Qiao Xun chuckled and shook his head, casually asking, “Dad, how much do you know about the ‘New Life Project’?”

Qiao Se was puzzled, “Why suddenly ask about this?”

“Today, Qiaoqiao went off the grid because soone wanted to cooperate with her on the ‘New Life Project.’ I didn’t hide it from you.”

Qiao Se was surprised, “How did that get leaked?”

“The research institute was invaded, it must have been leaked then.”

“That’s bad, Xiaoqiao was finally leading an ordinary life, looks like it won’t be ordinary anymore.”

“The people around Qiaoqiao are no ordinary people, don’t worry about her.”

“It’s just that I feel sorry for her. She used to be so engrossed in her research, and now that sa research might disrupt her peaceful life again. She’s only eighteen.”

Sympathy filled Qiao Se’s eyes.

Qiao Xun pursed his lips and asked in a low voice, “Is this plan really that miraculous?”

Qiao Se reminisced, “I haven’t told you, have I? I was among the first to participate in the research. At that ti, we actually managed to save a life, and he is still alive and kicking now.”

Qiao Xun paused, “Who else has undergone the experint?”

Realizing he had slipped up, Qiao Se quickly said, “Let’s not talk about this anymore. Let’s talk about you instead. You’re not young anymore, yet you still haven’t married. Didn’t you tell a few years ago that there was soone you liked? What happened to that?”

“Did I? I don’t rember that,” Qiao Xun said with a puzzled look.

Seeing his serious expression, Qiao Se wondered, “Could it be that I rembered it wrong? My mory isn’t what it used to be now that I am old.”

Qiao Xun smiled without saying a word.

He was stooping down, focusing intently on digging the ground, but there was a hint of darkness in his eyes.

The elder of the Zhou family suddenly received a ssage.

It instructed him not to trouble Professor Qiao for now.

He checked the ssage several tis to make sure he wasn’t seeing things, inevitably feeling bewildered.

What is going on?

One mont they want him to look for Professor Qiao, and the next mont they don’t?

Since the organization always contacted him from different numbers, he couldn’t be sure whether it was Qiao Yun playing tricks from her end.

The elder of the Zhou family took a sip of tea, his eyes reflective.

Could it be that they are having an internal dispute?

The expression on his face was unclear, as if he felt soone was toying with him.

Luckily, he hadn’t been counting much on this secretive and elusive organization.

Putting down the teacup, his eyes were dark and inscrutable. Now that he had glimpsed this secret, how could he possibly give up on it?

He considered himself an equal, a collaborator with the organization, not a subordinate, and felt no need to obey their instructions.

Several days later.

Pei Ya arranged a eting with Qiao Yun, and the two t in a secluded café.

Pei Ya got straight to the point, “I have news about the matter concerning the elder Mrs. Zhou you asked to look into.”

“Oh,” indicated Qiao Yun, signaling him to speak quickly.

Without beating around the bush, Pei Ya said, “The elder Mrs. Zhou fell ill a few months ago, just collapsed suddenly. Her condition fluctuated, sotis better, sotis worse.”

No matter how good the health, one cannot escape the inevitability of death.

“There is sothing strange though,” Pei Ya said seriously. “Lately, her condition has been stable, even giving the illusion that she might recover.”

“Hmm?” Qiao Yun motioned for him to continue.

“Not long ago, the elder Mr. Zhou suddenly gathered a lot of people to study a certain drug’s properties, and it seems the elder Mrs. Zhou might have used this drug.”

Pei Ya inford her, “It wasn’t difficult to find out; apparently, the elder Mr. Zhou was in a hurry and didn’t secure the information well. Quite a few people are aware that the elder Mrs. Zhou got better after taking so drug.”

“Is there really a drug that can bring the dead back to life?” A faint confusion surfaced in Qiao Yun’s clear eyes.

“How could that be possible,” Pei Ya shook his head. “At most, it’s life extension. I suspect the drug was from the organization, otherwise he wouldn’t have had it analyzed for its properties before allowing the elder Mrs. Zhou to use it.”

Qiao Yun nodded nonchalantly.

“The Zhou family has had a substantial expenditure recently. Following this clue, I suspect they are secretly conducting research.”

Upon ntioning this, there was an indescribable unease in Pei Ya’s heart.
