Chapter 74: Chapter 74: Rescue Center 2

"I’ll just leave the things here. I—" She had wanted to say she would go in and take a look, but the people inside the glass enclosure were bustling about. The small animals were either hanging their heads or lying on the ground. It didn’t seem like there would be much for her to see if she went in alone.

She thought for a mont, then announced she was leaving.

The young man tried to get her to stay, but Jiang Qiuqiu shook her head. "I have sothing to do, so I’ll head back for now. If you’re always in need of food, I can bring another batch in a while."

"We really do. Thank you so much."

"Could you please leave your na?" the young man in green asked, offering his pen.

"There’s no need to leave a na. I’ll be back. Thanks for your help."

The young man in green watched Jiang Qiuqiu’s back as she left, standing there for a long, long ti.

-

"Why are you lugging such a big box? What’s in it?" A gruff-looking man in a loose, long shirt walked over to the young man in green, reaching out to help him with it.

"Brother Leopard, no need to help. I’ve got it." He sidestepped the man and hurried to the office at the back of the rescue center.

The young man in green, Little Qing, pressed the assembly bell. Soon, the five or six employees working at the rescue center had all gathered.

Little Qing opened the insulated container. "Soone ca today and donated a batch of prepared natural food."

"There’s a lot. Let’s divide it up for everyone at the center."

As he started portioning out the food, he punctured the thermal bag. The group, who had been calm just a mont ago, was suddenly hit by an incredibly enticing aroma. The scent wasn’t simple; the vapor that rushed out of the bag was complex, but every one of its rich notes was utterly intoxicating.

...

"Where’d this natural food co from? Did you order it from the Federation’s revolving restaurant?" Brother Leopard asked, a bit dumbfounded. He exclaid, "This is too generous."

"It was indeed a very generous young lady who ca today. We can all eat our fill!"

"Stop talking and let’s hurry up and divide it," a staff mber said, swallowing hard. "This way, everyone can eat sooner, and the brothers outside can get a whiff of it sooner too."

Unexpectedly, the young Little Qing was the one in charge here. He gave the order, "Alright, let’s pick up the pace."

But what was truly astonishing was that while Little Qing had said to divide the food for everyone, and there were only seven or eight people in the office, they ended up portioning out thirty to forty als.

...

Carrying the incredibly fragrant, portioned-out als, Little Qing and Brother Leopard went to deliver the food to the cages outside.

They chatted with the animals in the cages as they handed over the food containers.

It was strange. So of the animals seed to understand them perfectly, as if they were human.

But others were completely feral. Even though the n were there to feed them, they were t with bared fangs.

Whenever they were greeted with such aggression, both Little Qing and Brother Leopard would beco deeply pained.

After all the food containers had been distributed, Little Qing sat on a nearby table and asked dejectedly, "How many lost consciousness today?"

"Two."

"..."

"Two..." Little Qing calculated in his head. ’That ans there are only eleven of us left who are still lucid.’

"Yeah." Brother Leopard gave a bitter laugh. "Sotis I feel like those cages are the final destination for people like us."

"Born to the envy of the masses, inheriting powerful Genes, only to... perish in a cage in the end."

"Don’t say that!" Little Qing slapped Brother Leopard’s arm angrily. "It won’t co to that."

"As long as we keep it under control, it will never be like that."

"I know all that." Brother Leopard was a veteran, after all. "But what if we can’t control it?"

He rolled up his sleeve. His once-smooth left arm was now covered in spotted, orange-yellow fur. "Sotis, the more you try to control it, the less you can."

Little Qing stared at the patch of fur, his heart instantly turning to ice.
