Ben grabbed his grandson and hugged him tight. "You keep doing exactly what you and Hyden are doing. Don’t let it go—help Allison survive."
Ed walked in and listened to the story from afar, then took a seat beside Daniel. "Young man, you and Hyden will have the complete cooperation of this entire dical facility, and what you have done will never be forgotten. Hopefully this will build a bridge between humans and Genn so that they can work together as a team." His voice grew firm. "And don’t worry about the board mbers because I’ll throw their asses off the board if they don’t like it."
"Now this brings to another thing since you are all here. Leo and Emma have not asked for anything, but talking to Leo I have discovered that they are in a very difficult position because of Allison’s birth."
"Emma lost her job as assistant curator at the tropolis Museum of Natural History and Science. Just yesterday Leo found out that he has been terminated from his employnt as one of the top landscape architects and design engineers in the city. Hell, he designed Center City’s Botanical Gardens and they had no problem just kicking him out the door when he had a family ergency." Ed’s anger was evident in his voice. "And to make things even worse, they got behind on the rent. He was late—thanks to the tram system—in paying the back amount by 30 minutes. The landlord took the paynt as being late but it still didn’t catch them up and inford Leo that their apartnt had been cleared out. All their stuff had been thrown out on the streets and they have no place to live."
"If they don’t have a place to live when Allison is discharged, social services will not allow her to be released and they will put her in the system according to law. Hyden and I have decided we cannot let that happen to our friends. They’ve been through too much, so I’m asking for help from the three most important people I know."
Daniel’s voice grew heavy with emotion. "Emma doesn’t know anything other than she lost her job. She has no idea about Leo or even their ho. Grandfather, don’t we have a spare ho for this family? Even though they are humans, no child deserves this."
Ben picked up his cell and made a phone call. "Roy, this is Ben. Drop everything—contact Robbie, pull n out of the warehouse if you have to. Unit 17 needs to be transford from top to bottom, inside and out. Get everything replaced, everything. The small room shall be painted a pale pink for a young lady, and go back to section 71 and pull out the finest furnishings we have and put in that unit. We have a new employee and his family, and they are VIPs." His tone beca threatening. "And Roy, don’t drop the ball on this one or soone’s going to co hit you in the head, if my son-in-law has anything to say about it. I told you to do this and to keep it to yourself until he sees , then I’ll tell him personally."
"Yes, sir Mr. Ben, I’m right on it. Your VIPs will not be disappointed and the house will be ready in two days tops."
Ben closed his phone and smiled. "That’s done now. Zack, it’s up to you to hire them. Seems like you could use a curator such as Emma Rich, and the place could definitely use Leo because it doesn’t look that great yet. The main gate, the main area of the house that Jared has taken over looks nice, but everyone deserves that in life."
Ed looked shocked. "You an that Emma is the Emma Rich? Carter is going to have a breakdown when he finds out that the tropolitan Museum of Natural History and Science terminated her and we are blessed enough to offer her a job. I have to make a call."
Carter’s phone was ringing when he picked it up and it was Ed on the other end of the line. "Honey, are you sitting down?"
"Yes, why? Ed, what is it this ti?"
"Carter, does the na Emma Rich an anything to you?"
"Emma Rich from the tropolitan Museum of Natural History and Science? You better believe it ans sothing to . She is the assistant curator of that place—she runs it. They have an asswipe that takes all of her credit, but she runs it. She is the museum. Why, what happened?"
"You know the young lady that is in the NNICU with the baby that’s not doing good—or correction, that was not doing good? She’s one and the sa. That is Emma Rich and her husband Leo is with her. How would you like to offer her a job of a lifeti running the new Museum and Interactive Learning Center at the Z-1? I don’t think that Zack would have a problem with you approaching her."
Zack spoke up. "Carter, it’s all yours. Go secure her employnt because we’re going to hire her husband Leo also. The job cos with housing at the Z-1—in fact, unit #17 is being gutted as we speak and totally redone with the finest of everything that we have in the warehouse to be put into the ho. She doesn’t know it, but they lost everything. Her husband lost his job and thanks to an unscrupulous landlord, they lost their ho because they chose their child over everything else in the world."
"Okay, this is no disrespect, but Zack, you, Ed and whoever’s with you don’t approach them and don’t say a word. I’m on my way, and this buggy better be as fast as Ed says it is or he’s going to have to redesign another one that’s a lot faster. I’m on my way."
Carter walked into the hospital and took the express elevator to the NNICU waiting room. He got off the elevator and was walking by the windows when Emma saw him. Emma elbowed Leo in his side to get his attention.
"Oh my gosh," she said in a hushed tone, "that’s Carter Hawthorne. What in the world is he doing here? I know him and his partner built and funded this place, but what’s he doing on this floor?"
She almost passed out when he opened the door and walked in.
Carter, never one to be shy, walked right up to Emma. "I’d like to introduce myself to you. My na is Carter Hawthorne and it’s very nice to have you here in the hospital. I understand that you’ve been having a little bit of trouble and your daughter is not doing so well."
Emma was at a loss for words. "She’s doing better now thanks to so friends, and I want to thank you and your husband Ed for building this wonderful place for premature babies."
