The ship left at the morning tide.

A trading vessel — Ampelos had chosen it carefully. Not Troy’s flag, a Carian comrcial mark. The cargo was real: the first shipnt from the second Carian timber contact, legitimate goods moving through a legitimate route. Paris traveled as a factor for the Carian trading house, with docuntation that would withstand inspection by anyone who had not been told specifically what to look for.

Lysander was at the harbor at the second hour.

Paris was already there.

He was standing at the dock with one traveling case — not the kind a prince traveled with, the kind a rchant traveled with, worn at the corners from use, the specific props of a role he had been building since before the frawork existed. He was watching the crew load the timber samples onto the ship.

He looked up when Lysander ca.

"The docuntation," Paris said.

"Ampelos gave it to you yesterday."

"Yes. I read it three tis."

"The check-in word."

"Timber for normal. Grain for changed."

"The return date."

"Six weeks from today."

"The exit condition."

"If I find myself in a situation that creates commitnts I cannot make and cannot deflect — I exit imdiately."

"Yes."

Paris looked at the ship.

"Six weeks," he said.

"Yes."

He did not say: co back safely. He did not say: I believe in you. Both of those things were true and both would have made the mont smaller.

Hector ca at the third hour.

He ca the way he went to important things — directly, without ceremony. He looked at Paris and at the ship.

He said to Paris: "The military numbers I gave you."

"I carry them."

"And you do not say them."

"No."

"Not to reassure soone. Not to impress soone."

"No."

Hector looked at the ship.

"The Argolid king’s grain factors," he said. "When you et them — they will try to understand what you are before they say anything substantial. They will test you with small things first."

"I know."

"Do not try to seem like what they expect. Be what you are."

"And what am I."

Hector looked at him.

"Soone who has been paying attention."

He stepped back.

That was the end of what Hector had to say. He stayed — he did not leave — but the saying was done.

Cassandra ca at the fourth hour.

She ca down to the harbor, which she rarely did. She ca to the dock and stood near Paris and did not speak.

Paris looked at her.

She looked at the ship.

After a while she took sothing from her sleeve and held it out to him. A small piece of clay — marked, a word written in the old script, the one she sotis used for the things she did not want everyone to read.

Paris took it.

He looked at it.

He put it in his traveling case without reading what it said.

She looked at the harbor water.

He looked at her.

"Whatever you feel," he said. "When I am gone."

"Yes."

"Send it to Lysander."

"Yes."

She turned and walked back toward the palace.

Paris watched her go.

He did not say anything about the clay piece. He did not ask what was written on it. He closed the traveling case.

’He is not going to read it,’ Lysander thought. ’Or he will read it in a private mont when he has already decided what he is going to do and the reading will confirm or it will not and either way he will continue.’

’That is how Paris works. The information cos after the decision has ford enough to hold.’

The boy arrived at the fifth hour.

Not alone — with two other settlent children, the ones who had been learning the eastern dialect with Paris in the harbor school. They ca down to the dock the way children ca to important things, in a loose group moving faster than walking but slower than running, aware of the occasion.

The boy — the nine-year-old who had taught Paris the word for return — stopped in front of Paris.

He said sothing.

Paris listened.

He said sothing back, in the eastern dialect. The boy nodded — correct. Said sothing else. Paris tried. The boy shook his head. Said it correctly. Paris tried again.

The boy nodded.

He put his hand out.

Paris shook it — solemnly, the way you shook hands with soone who had given you sothing real.

The boy and the other two children went back toward the gate.

Lysander had not understood what was said. He did not ask.

The ship’s captain called the boarding.

Paris picked up the traveling case.

He looked at Lysander.

"The clay piece on your table," he said.

"Yes."

"It is face up."

"Yes."

"Add a sixth line when I am gone."

"If there is one."

"There will be."

He boarded.

The ship moved out from the dock — slowly at first, the careful navigation of a harbor with barrier pilings and a fleet of coastal freight vessels and the remnants of last week’s wave still in the mooring areas. The crew was efficient. The Carian comrcial mark on the hull was visible as the ship turned.

Hector watched without speaking.

Lysander watched without speaking.

The ship cleared the barrier pilings.

It entered the open water.

The hull caught the morning light for a mont — the specific brightness of a vessel moving from harbor shadow into full sun — and then it was past the headland and gone.

Hector left first.

He turned and walked back toward the palace without ceremony. The way he left things when the thing was done and the next thing was waiting.

Lysander stayed.

He stood at the end of the dock.

The harbor was doing its morning — the sounds of it, the ropes and the calls and the percussion of a working port. The ships coming in from the night watches. The fishing fleet returning. The coastal freight vessels being loaded for the southern run.

’He is gone,’ Lysander thought. ’The thread is pulled. Whatever Cassandra felt she felt it from this mont — the specific mont of departure that makes what was possible actual.’

’I built what I built. I gave him what I had. I trusted the exit condition.’

’Now the waiting.’

He turned from the harbor.

Arsini was at the supply office.

She was at the secondary table with the outer ring supply analysis and the session records from the seventh school and the knowledge catalogue update from Deia. She looked up when he ca in.

She did not ask if Paris had left. She had watched from the school window.

She said: "The outer ring water supply. The southern section. Three days at the current population before we need to expand the source."

"Options."

"Sena identified a secondary groundwater point two hundred ters north of the current source. She and Deia went to look at it this morning."

"At the sixth hour."

"Yes. Before the school session." She looked at her tablet. "Sena says the yield is sufficient. Deia recorded the thod for tapping it."

"Use it."

"Already arranged." She made a note. "The seventh school second session tomorrow. Fifteen children. One more enrolled this morning — a Troy-born family from the outer district, referred by Maea."

"Maea is still sending families."

"Every week." She set the tablet down. "The knowledge catalogue. Shebek’s fishern. Two of them ca to Deia yesterday and offered to describe the sea-reading thods without being asked."

"They ca to her."

"They had heard about the catalogue from soone in the outer ring. They said: we were told there is soone who records what people know."

He looked at her.

"Soone told them."

*"Yes. Deia thinks it was Sena." She almost smiled. "Sena has apparently been talking."

’Sena has been talking,’ he thought. ’A sixty-four-year-old woman who has been carrying forty years of groundwater knowledge through displacent told two fishern from Shebek’s community: there is soone who records what people know. And they ca.’

’The catalogue is finding its own people.’

He sat down.

He looked at the supply office. The table. The coastal watch report. The clay piece face up on the corner.

She was still at the secondary table.

"Arsini," he said.

She looked up.

He held her gaze.

"I want to say sothing," he said. "And I am going to say it once and not repeat it."

She was still.

"What you have built in the past three years — the schools, the catalogue, the mixed sessions, Deia — it is more than what I asked you to build. It is more than what I understood when I asked. I understood a supply problem. You built a city."

She did not look away.

"You built half of it," she said.

"I gave you the resources and the direction. The building was yours."

"The direction ca from you and the building ca from . In a structure that we built together." She looked at her tablet. "There is no version of it that belongs only to one of us."

He looked at her.

"No," he said. "There isn’t."

She held the tablet.

The supply office was quiet.

Outside, the harbor. The morning sounds settling into the rhythm of a city that had absorbed sothing large and was continuing.

She said: "He will co back."

Not a certainty. Still a fact stated in the present tense.

"Yes," he said.

She looked at him for a long mont — the quiet look, the one that existed past recalibration, past the checking for alignnt. Sothing more direct than any of the previous looks.

She said: "Why do you think I do the counting? The lamp refills. The training repetitions."

He looked at her.

"I have been asking myself that," he said.

"I know." She held his gaze. "Because when the information coming in is bad — the four months, the western watch gap, the wave still arriving — I want to know that sothing is still accumulating. Still building." She paused. "You are the thing I watch accumulate."

The supply office was quiet.

He held that.

’You are the thing I watch accumulate.’

’She said it. She said it directly and plainly in the supply office on the morning Paris left and she is still looking at him and waiting to see what he does with it.’

He said: "I know the count."

She looked at him.

"The lamp refills," he said. "The repetitions. I know you count them. I have known for a long ti. I have been—" He stopped. Started again. "I have been grateful for it. That is not the whole truth. The whole truth is that knowing you count them changes how I work. I work differently because soone is counting."

She was very still.

"Yes," she said. "So do I."

They looked at each other.

Outside, the harbor. The city. The morning.

She picked up the tablet.

"The outer ring water supply," she said. "Three days."

"Yes."

"I will send the arrangent to Sena today."

"Yes."

She gathered the tablets and went out.

He sat at the table.

He looked at the clay piece.

He picked up the stylus.

He added a sixth line: The network is the people, not the structure.

He looked at it.

That was the fifth line. He had written it already.

He crossed it out.

He wrote: What you count is what you value.

He looked at the six lines.

He turned the clay face down.

He picked up his shard.
