Approximately ninety minutes into their cultivation, Raena stirred.
"Azrail," she said quietly, her voice pitched to reach only their group. "Three individuals approaching from the western path. Cultivation levels: Heaven Core Early, Qi Refinent Peak, Qi Refinent Peak. Affiliation based on robes: Burning Sky family. Deanour suggests official capacity rather than random wandering."
Azrail opened his eyes partially, his gaze tracking the indicated direction.
Three figures in red-trimd robes walked along the main path through the cultivation grounds, their movents purposeful. The lead figure was a man in his thirties with sharp features and eyes that catalogued everything they passed. Heaven Core Realm Early—respectable power for an outer sect elder. Behind him, two younger disciples flanked him, their posture attentive and subordinate.
’All-Seer, identify them,’ Azrail commanded.
[Scanning... Lead figure: Elder Zhao Chen, Burning Sky family outer elder, Heaven Core Realm, Early stage, fire-attribute cultivation, specialising in explosive techniques. Personality profile based on body language and micro-expressions: ambitious, resentful of current rank, prone to brown-nosing superiors while bullying subordinates. Left disciple: Han Wu, outer disciple, Qi Refinent Peak, unremarkable. Right disciple: Liu Feng, outer disciple, Qi Refinent Peak, slightly more talented than Han Wu. Purpose of current patrol: surveillance of Lin i under orders from Vice Master Luo’s faction.]
’So they’re keeping tabs on her,’ Azrail thought. ’Probably reporting her movents to ensure she’s where she’s supposed to be tomorrow night.’
The three Burning Sky family mbers continued their path through the grounds, ostensibly conducting a routine inspection. Elder Zhao’s eyes passed over various platforms, offering perfunctory nods to cultivators who greeted him respectfully.
Then his gaze landed on Lin i’s platform.
His expression shifted—subtle, quickly controlled, but Azrail caught it. Satisfaction mixed with sothing darker. The elder’s eyes lingered on Lin i’s ditating form for several seconds longer than necessary, his lips curving into the faintest smirk.
’He knows about the assassination plan,’ Azrail thought. ’He’s enjoying the sight of a victim who doesn’t know she’s already dead.’
Then Elder Zhao’s attention shifted to the adjacent platform—Azrail’s group.
The smirk vanished instantly, replaced by wariness that flashed through his eyes before professional neutrality reasserted itself. The elder’s spiritual sense extended toward them in an investigative probe—
And bounced off the defensive formations Azrail had quietly activated around their platform the mont the family mbers appeared.
Elder Zhao’s expression flickered with surprise, then calculation. His eyes moved from person to person: Azrail, whose beauty even in ditation drew the eye; Valencia, whose pink hair and veiled face suggested high status; Raena, whose red eyes and dangerous aura scread power; Xuanyin, whose cold presence created visible frost; Huifen, whose calm competence marked her as soone important.
The elder’s gaze returned to Azrail, and recognition dawned—not specific recognition, but classification. The Ai family symbol on their chariot is visible in the landing area. The cultivation levels that even suppressed suggested extraordinary talent. The way they carried themselves with unconscious authority.
This was not a group to casually offend.
Elder Zhao altered his trajectory slightly, angling away from a direct approach to Azrail’s platform. His disciples, taking the cue, adjusted their own paths. The elder offered a respectful bow in Azrail’s direction—not too deep to suggest fear, but deep enough to acknowledge status.
"This humble one greets honoured guests," Elder Zhao called out, his tone professionally courteous. "I am Elder Zhao of the Burning Sky family conducting a routine grounds inspection. I hope your cultivation session has been productive."
It was formulaic politeness, the kind of greeting that satisfied propriety without demanding real interaction.
Azrail opened his eyes fully, eting the elder’s gaze with calm indifference.
"Elder Zhao," he acknowledged with a slight nod. "Your cultivation grounds are impressive. Scarlet Peak City maintains them well."
"You honour us with your presence," Elder Zhao replied, the words automatic. His eyes, however, continued their assessnt. "Might I inquire why soone as exalted as you is here?"
It was a probe disguised as courtesy, trying to determine why they are here, in such a backward place.
"Just ca for so sightseeing," Azrail said, his tone implying that further elaboration was unnecessary.
Elder Zhao’s eyes widened fractionally.
"Then Scarlet Peak City is truly fortunate to host such distinguished guests. If there is anything our humble sect can provide to make your stay more comfortable, please do not hesitate to inform us."
"Your hospitality is appreciated," Azrail replied, his tone making it clear the conversation was concluded.
Elder Zhao took the dismissal with practised grace, bowing once more before continuing his patrol. As he moved away, Azrail noticed the elder’s gaze flick once more toward Lin i’s platform, his expression unreadable.
The mont the Burning Sky Sect group passed out of comfortable hearing range, Xiao Yuan’s whisper carried clearly in the relative quiet.
"i’er, did you see that? Even Elder Zhao looked nervous talking to them! I told you they were important!"
Lin i’s response was too quiet to hear naturally, but Azrail’s enhanced senses caught it: "Yuan’er, lower your voice. Don’t draw attention."
"But—"
"Yuan’er." Lin i’s tone, while still gentle, carried an edge that made her friend imdiately fall silent. "Sotis the most dangerous thing you can do is seem too interested in dangerous people."
’Smart girl,’ Azrail thought again. ’She understands that showing too much curiosity about us could put her on soone’s radar—probably the Burning Sky family’s.’
The cultivation session continued for another thirty minutes before Lin i concluded hers. She rose gracefully, her movents carrying no hint of stiffness despite sitting in ditation for nearly two hours. Her servants imdiately began gathering the cultivation resources, packing everything with practised efficiency.
As they prepared to leave, Lin i’s eyes t Azrail’s one final ti. She offered a polite bow—appropriate for a lesser noble acknowledging a greater one—and spoke in that soft, gentle voice that had fooled so many.
"Thank you for sharing the cultivation grounds today, Young Master Azrail. Your presence made for an... instructive session."
The words were proper and unremarkable. But the brief flicker in her eyes, visible for just a fraction of a second, said sothing entirely different: ’I see you. And you see . And now we both know it.’
Azrail inclined his head in acknowledgent. "The pleasure was mutual, Lady Lin. May we et again under auspicious circumstances."
"May it be so," Lin i replied.
And then she was leaving, Xiao Yuan chattering beside her, servants following with bags of resources, the picture of an ordinary noble daughter concluding an ordinary cultivation session.
But Azrail knew—, and she knew he knew—that there was nothing ordinary about what had just transpired.
As Lin i’s group disappeared down the pathway back toward the city, Valencia opened her eyes fully and turned to Azrail.
"She’s remarkable," Valencia said, genuine admiration in her voice. "I’ve seen countless so-called geniuses, but very few at her age with that level of... I don’t even know what to call it. Strategic patience? Survival instinct?"
"Both," Raena answered, having listened to the entire exchange through her own thods. "That girl has been playing survival gas for a very long ti. Probably most of her life. You don’t develop those kinds of reflexes without necessity."
Adria’s phantom drifted closer, her eyes thoughtful. "She reminds of soone I knew long ago. I hope this one’s story has a better ending."
"It will," Azrail said quietly. "Because this ti, she won’t be alone when the knives co out."
Huifen, who had been silently observing the entire interaction, spoke up. "Azrail, shall I arrange accommodations for tonight? I took the liberty of reserving rooms at the Crimson Ember Pavilion—the sa establishnt we visited yesterday. It will place us within rapid response distance of the Lin Clan compound should... events... require our attention."
Azrail smiled. "Excellent foresight, Huifen. Yes, make the arrangents. Also, see if you can obtain a copy of tomorrow night’s banquet guest list for the Lin Clan. I want to know exactly who will be present when things go wrong."
"Already acquired, young master," Huifen replied, producing a jade slip from her storage ring. "The guest list, seating arrangents, nu, and security detail assignnts. I thought it prudent to gather comprehensive information."
Raena laughed, the sound both delighted and slightly awed. "Azrail wasn’t exaggerating about you. You’re frighteningly competent."
Huifen’s lips curved in a small, shy smile. "My mother has taught that proper preparation prevents most problems."
"Only the interesting ones," Azrail confird.
They concluded their own cultivation session and made their way back to the chariot. As they lifted off from the cultivation grounds, Azrail cast one final glance toward the city below, his eyes tracking the direction of the Lin Clan compound.
Tomorrow night, blood would spill. Power would awaken. And a gentle flower would reveal the thorns it had been hiding for so very long.
Azrail found himself genuinely looking forward to it.
