Since Li Qiang discovered that Lu Lin liked Zhou Yuwen, he had given up on pursuing her. However, when he heard in the dorm that Zhou Yuwen and Shen Yu would sing a duet during the military training performance, he couldn't help but worry about Lu Lin. With so many girls chasing after Zhou Yuwen, could she succeed?
He opened WeChat and found Lu Lin's profile. Logically, Li Qiang knew he should delete her and let them beco strangers. Many nights, he had thought about doing just that. But in the end, he couldn't bring himself to do it. All he could manage was to clear their chat history, hoping to erase the mories of his humiliation.
But it didn't help much.
After staring at their chat window for a long ti, Li Qiang finally couldn't resist typing a ssage: "Shen Yu ca looking for Zhou Yuwen today. It seems they're going to sing a duet at the military training performance."
Li Qiang's judgnt was spot on. Shen Yu hadn't ntioned this to her dormmates, so Lu Lin was taken aback when she received the ssage. But then she realized what Li Qiang was trying to do.
She couldn't help but feel it was a bit ridiculous.
Was he really trying to give her a heads-up?
"Thanks."
"You're welco."
Li Qiang had matured a lot; he didn't try to pester Lu Lin anymore. But even just seeing her respond with a "thanks" made his heart flutter.
If he couldn't have her, at least he could help her in other ways, right?
Lu Lin wasn't concerned about who Zhou Yuwen sang with. She didn't have any strong feelings for him—at most, she didn't dislike him. The first ti they t, Li Qiang had told her that Zhou Yuwen was involved with gangsters. Later, Lu Lin saw posts about Zhou Yuwen on the forum, with claims that he had scared a senior so badly at a barbecue stall that the guy wet his pants, complete with pictures as proof.
In those pictures, Zhou Yuwen is surrounded by a group of heavy-set students, and he does look sowhat like a gangster.
Lu Lin wasn't sure if the stories were true, but she thought Zhou Yuwen seed impressive. That was why she had impulsively asked him for the 2,000 yuan. She planned to repay him once she started earning money. And if Zhou Yuwen wanted to be repaid in another way, Lu Lin wouldn't mind.
In the dorm, each girl was busy with her own thing. Su Qing, who was well-regarded by the counselor, was handling all sorts of tasks. Zheng Yanyan was admiring herself in the mirror while changing clothes. Shen Yu had just returned from outside.
Zheng Yanyan asked Shen Yu where she had been.
Shen Yu smiled and said, "Nowhere, just went for a walk."
Zheng Yanyan teased, "You didn't secretly go see Zhou Yuwen, did you?"
Su Qing looked up at Shen Yu.
Shen Yu blushed and playfully scolded, "Of course not."
Su Qing, being soone who had been reborn, had hoped to rekindle her relationship with Zhou Yuwen. But it was clear that it wouldn't happen, especially since they had agreed not to date in college. After the initial urgency she felt at the beginning of the sester, Su Qing had settled down. No matter how much Zheng Yanyan or Shen Yu flirted with Zhou Yuwen, Su Qing remained calm and focused on her own affairs.
Zheng Yanyan laughed and said, "Alright, we've agreed—fair competition, no cheating!"
"Boring," Su Qing muttered as she worked on a spreadsheet.
Shen Yu, too, seed unconcerned. "If you like Zhou Yuwen, go ahead and chase him. It's all the sa to ."
"Co on! If you guys act like this, I'll lose my motivation!" Zheng Yanyan had hoped to stand out in their rivalry, but seeing both Shen Yu and Su Qing so indifferent, she lost interest.
While the dorm was buzzing with activity, Lu Lin preferred to be alone on the balcony. She watched the sunset turn the horizon red, casting its glow over the playground below, where boys and girls passed by.
The day passed like this, and the next afternoon, the military parade took place, marking the end of the training. The second company's fourth class won second prize. After the parade, it was officially the end of military training. From that mont on, the distinction between students and instructors vanished.
That evening, students and instructors mingled at the bonfire party on the playground, chatting and dancing together. Many students joked and played around with their instructors. Initially, the students were excited, lifting their instructor into the air in celebration. But then soone shouted, "Aruba! Aruba!"
The instructor, terrified, tumbled out of the students' hands. "Who said Aruba?!"
The students laughed, but no one dared to admit who it was.
The bonfire party was organized by each class, bringing together boys and girls who hadn't seen much of each other for a month.
"Long ti no see, class representative," said Gu Yaoyao, her military uniform making her look a bit thinner, but her skin still as fair as ever, her double eyelids especially striking in the firelight.
"Not for long," Zhou Yuwen replied.
"Why not?"
"Take a look."
Zhou Yuwen pointed ahead, where a group of students was chasing after Chang Hao, shouting "Aruba."
During the month of military training, Chang Hao had gotten along well with his classmates, making him a strong candidate for class representative.
Gu Yaoyao watched the scene with amusent. "Don't sell yourself short. You've done a lot of good for us."
Zhou Yuwen glanced at her and asked with a grin, "Does that count as bribery?"
"Kind of," Gu Yaoyao giggled.
A group of students continued to play around, eventually catching up to Chang Hao and carrying out the "Aruba" ritual. While there were no poles on the playground, a sturdy steel lamp post was nearby, gray and thick.
Li Qiang grabbed one of Chang Hao's legs, grinning. "Over there!"
"Co on, guys! Let
go!" Chang Hao struggled, laughing despite himself. He wasn't truly angry; he knew that having classmates willing to play with him ant he had solid support.
Chang Hao had been riding high lately. That afternoon, the second company's fourth class won second prize, and as a class representative, Chang Hao went on stage to accept the award on behalf of the class. His military training performance was rated as excellent, and he even received a dal. It was a mont of glory, but he felt guilty about Zhou Yuwen.
With military training over, the role of class representative would undoubtedly go to Chang Hao. There was no question about it. Zhou Yuwen's unauthorized delivery of hamburgers to the camp, while not reported to the school, hadn't gone unnoticed by the counselor, who had already spoken to him.
Zhou Yuwen didn't mind losing the role.
However, Zheng Yanyan felt guilty, thinking it was her fault that Zhou Yuwen had lost his position.
"Should I ask Chang Hao to give the class representative position back to you?" she naively asked Zhou Yuwen online.
"Don't bother."
Zheng Yanyan wasn't completely clueless. She had already caused trouble for Zhou Yuwen once and hadn't told Chang Hao that she liked Zhou Yuwen. If Chang Hao knew, he'd probably lose his mind.
She even suggested to Zhou Yuwen that they had a secret relationship.
"What if we date in secret, without telling anyone?"
Zhou Yuwen didn't respond to this idea, leaving Zheng Yanyan unsure whether he agreed.
"Aruba! Aruba!"
Li Qiang held Chang Hao's left leg, while Jiang Chao held his right. Despite Chang Hao's struggles, it was no use.
Eventually, Chang Hao gave up and resigned himself to the inevitable, thinking it wasn't painful.
Aruba isn't painful unless the person doing it is really out to get you.
However, Chang Hao underestimated Li Qiang's grudge and Jiang Chao disliked him. Jiang Chao saw Chang Hao as an arrogant guy from Beijing who couldn't do anything right but loved to show off.
The two exchanged glances, and then, "Oh~," they slamd Chang Hao's legs into the lamp post.
Chang Hao, smiling just a mont ago, felt a sharp pain below and let out a whimper.
The crowd scattered, leaving Chang Hao clutching himself, his face red and veins bulging as he rolled on the track in agony.
For a long ti, he writhed and thrashed on the ground.
The students playing around nearby were shocked. "Hey, Chang Hao! Don't scare us!"
Fortunately, it was nothing serious, just incredibly painful.
"Li Qiang, I'll kill you!"
When Chang Hao finally managed to stand, the first thing he did was shout at Li Qiang, who quickly ran off, calling out as he fled, "It wasn't , it was Jiang Chao!"
The bonfire party continued with performances starting at 8 PM. The military training show was a mix of acts by instructors and students. The instructors' first acts were military-thed dances—tall, muscular n beat drums and danced, showcasing their masculine beauty.
Many second- and third-year students also watched from the sidelines.
The instructors prepared many acts, including group dances and individual talent performances, such as harmonica and guitar playing.
After the instructors finished, it was ti for the students to perform.
The first student performance was a duet dance by Zheng Yanyan and Lu Lin. Zheng Yanyan had been preparing for this performance for a long ti. During rehearsals, she would even send Zhou Yuwen pictures of her legs and ask him to guess what kind of dance they practiced.
When Zhou Yuwen asked, she wouldn't tell him, saying it was a secret.
"You'll find out when the ti cos. Don't forget to record a video for !"
By now, Zheng Yanyan and Lu Lin were on stage.
Zheng Yanyan wore a pink sweatshirt with a white pleated skirt. Her long, straight legs were clad in white knee-high socks. Her outfit alone drew a lot of attention.
"Wow, who's that girl?"
"She's the one who danced the other day!"
"Oh, I know who you an!"
Lu Lin was dressed just as stylishly, wearing a loose-fitting casual blazer over a black tube top, revealing her slim waist. Her lower half was clad in a leather skirt and black over-the-knee boots. This was the first ti anyone had seen Lu Lin show off her legs, even if it was just a glimpse of her thighs. Her legs were slimr and whiter than Zheng Yanyan's, possibly because they had been hidden under jeans for so long.
The two girls were about the sa height, with Lu Lin in tall boots and Zheng Yanyan in red-soled high heels. With these two beauties on stage, the dance they were about to perform hardly mattered.
When the music started, the crowd was already buzzing with excitent. They were performing the popular K-pop dance "Trouble Maker," originally a duet between a man and a woman. Here, Lu Lin took on the male role, while Zheng Yanyan perford the female part.
The dance began with each dancing solo from opposite sides of the stage.
As the spotlight hit them, they started moving to the music.
As ntioned earlier, the actual dance steps hardly mattered. Watching them in their outfits was enough to get the crowd fired up.
Zheng Yanyan's every move, from hip sways to backbends, was full of seductive charm.
As the music built up, Lu Lin grabbed Zheng Yanyan, pulled her close, and wrapped an arm around her waist.
Zheng Yanyan responded by gently cupping Lu Lin's face.
