Chapter 50: Lack of Experience
Luellen flinched and found Leander sitting on the side of her bed. She gasped and chuckled, her hands waving. "Please ignore that! But yes! I’m also happy I managed to knock him off me. I was so scared... What if he beat me up for kicking him?"
A familiar voice then chuckled with her. He didn’t even care if he felt pain from it. "Oh, he’d be a dead man walking if he did that."
The maiden gasped and looked past Leander’s face. Her face brightened. "Mr Beckett! You’re awake!"
"Hey, I heard many things from Madam Henny." Beckett flashed a big smile. He would have jumped around in his usual enthusiasm, but his body had no extra energy. It just sounded like he was so calm about it. "You plan on marrying Andy for real, no? Hey, congratulations..."
"Thank you..." Luellen blushed, soon moving to sit up on the couch, where she lay. She dusted her skirt and made sure she looked presentable. She then moved to sit on the edge of Beckett’s bed. "How are you feeling, Mr Beckett? You almost drowned, and I could have caused your stitches to come undone. I’m so sorry..."
"I want to say it’s okay... but you still call me Mr Beckett..." The man laughed, his hand pressed on the wound on his abdomen. He then looked up at Leander. "Andy, I’m jealous..."
Luellen glanced at Leander’s frowning face. She then chuckled and patted Beckett’s shoulder. "All right. Beckett... I’ll get used to that."
Beckett turned to her and showed a foxy smile despite his visible weakness. "I also heard something weird. I was your first—"
The maiden pressed a palm on Beckett’s face. "Don’t tease me about it. I had no time for men while working at my father’s office. He also didn’t allow men to woo me when they saw me at a gala. So I’m sorry if I look too innocent. Don’t tease me about that, please."
’A normal kiss gave me 100 EXP. I wonder how much that kiss is.’
Luellen secretly twisted her lips.
"Then again, it’s not like I would have done everything differently if I could turn back time. Mr Beckett is more important than my EXP..."
Before she could speak again, a hand cupped under her chin. Luellen felt the owner turn her face toward him. Without another word, Leander pecked at Luellen’s lips as if it were a normal occurrence. Since it wasn’t, Luellen froze. Her eyes grew wide at a visible pace, just as slow as heat crawled all over her face.
Her hands shot to hide her face from Leander. She didn’t even realize when Leander sat on the space next to Beckett’s pillows. She stuttered her words. "Mr... No, Leander! Why would you do that all of a sudden?"
"Hmm, I wonder."
Luellen spied a glare through the cracks of her fingers. Leander only chuckled and stroked her chin again. "You seem troubled by your lack of experience. I can help you with that..."
Leander brought his hand down, his teasing smile morphing into a frown. "Unfortunately, I have to address that man’s audacity to harm you first. Tell me more about his crime against you, Luellen. I doubt the restaurant has cameras in the restroom. Let me hear about it. I want to know what I must bill him for."
The maiden brought her hands down as well. However, she somewhat picked up Leander’s hand by the fingers. "He talks about offering the merger to me. I think he held those guys by the neck just so..."
Her lips pursed. Luellen looked up at Leander. "You won’t mind me saying what I think, right? I don’t have faith in people who pull off stunts like that."
"Not at all. I want to know what you think, truly." Leander didn’t deepen his frown. He just curled his fingers as if it counted as holding her hands.
"He’s trying to play me." Luellen stared at Leander’s hand again. "He tried to kiss me when we first met. I just stepped away in time. The next, he was only watching me the whole time we were at the farewell party. What happened in the restaurant was our third... meeting? No matter. I don’t like what he wants to do. He probably knows my father..."
"Why? Who is your father?"
Luellen flinched as she heard Beckett ask. She cleared her ugly expression and smiled at him. "Uhm... His name is Weyland Piper. He has a small antique-selling business and an auction house. He doesn’t have enemies, but his brother is a gambler. I only heard about a few bad things my uncle did that my father had to fix. My father likes to keep me out of their relationship."
Beckett frowned and held his chin. "Weyland Piper...? Why does that name sound familiar? Do we know him, Andy?"
Instead of an answer, Leander only narrowed his gaze at Beckett. His brother then pouted.
Luellen figured that was a ’no’...
"In any case, that man has no right to trap you in a bad situation." Leander used his other hand to stroke Luellen’s head. "Let me sort out everything for you. Then, let’s ask. Don’t worry, I won’t do anything illegal as part of my promise to you."
"I’m really sorry about that..."
Luellen didn’t have to apologize. She just felt like Leander was used to handling it as any powerful man would. Then again, she didn’t want to gain her inheritance in a way that someone else could contest it again.
As if thinking about her situation reminded her of the heartache she’d felt back in the restaurant. Right, she was supposed to be in the restaurant earlier. She frowned a little before looking up at Leander again, clearing her frown.
Luellen asked, "Uhm, Leander, did you carry me here? Did I black out in the restaurant?"
"Yes, you fainted." Leander hummed with a small smile. "I carried you to the car and took you here since Henny called. I figured you’d want to speak to him at first notice. Don’t worry. The nurses looked you over before leaving you alone to sleep on the couch."
"That must have been so inconvenient. I’m sorry about that." Luellen sighed and massaged her forehead. "I’ll try not to cause you any trouble again."
Beckett laughed as if something caught his amusement. When Luellen looked at him, he pointed at her lightly. "Does that mean you get to plan your wedding alone? You don’t want to bother him, right?"
Luellen gasped and quickly turned to Leander. "I swear I wasn’t trying to forget about it! I just... I have so much work since we fired Ms Gala and Shirley. Wait, should I be looking into magazines now? Wait, I messed up the merger? Are we pulling out for real? Uhm, I forgot I still have to forward a few more emails..."
"Don’t worry about the wedding. Miss Bloomfield seems to know what you like." Leander hummed, stroking Luellen’s head again. He even used a thumb to keep her from massaging her temples. "Why don’t you speak to her about it? She might have gotten a few things wrong."
