Chapter 124: 118: Entering the Fire Scene to Save Changling, the Truth Behind Losing Hearing (Second Update)

Zhai Wenjin didn’t leave downstairs, growing more and more anxious as ti passed. Patients were being evacuated from the building in waves, until finally, the security personnel also ca out.

They put up isolation tape at the door.

“Why is it sealed off?” Zhai Wenjin approached the staff to ask, “Nurse, has everyone co out?”

The nurse was not sure, vaguely saying, “They should all be out.”

“Beihe, has that girl co out?” Zhai Wenjin was frantic with worry, scanning the crowd, “I can’t recognize her; I’ve only seen her photo.”

“Don’t panic, Xie Shang will arrive soon.”

Su Beihe had already called Xie Shang; Xie Shang asked Su Beihe to go directly to the hospital authorities, who would give face to the Su Family and the Xie Family. Rescuers had already been sent in, and the departnt had been checked, but so far, they still hadn’t made contact with Wen Changling.

About ten minutes later, Xie Shang arrived.

Zhai Wenjin hurriedly shouted, “Xingxing!”

Xie Shang ca over.

“Quick, check if the person has co out.”

Wen Changling was not in the group of those evacuated, and her phone couldn’t be reached. Both the head nurse of the VIP building and the head nurse of the oncology departnt had already been contacted by Xie Shang.

He looked at the building enveloped in thick smoke, “She might not have co out yet.”

Zhai Wenjin reassured, “The firefighters have already gone in; she should be fine.”

He walked straight forward.

Zhai Wenjin imdiately grabbed him, “What are you doing?”

Xie Shang appeared very calm, “I’m going to take a look.”

“You can’t go in.” Zhai Wenjin said seriously, not allowing him to act rashly, “Just wait a little longer, the fire isn’t completely out yet.”

“Grandma.”

Xie Shang rarely used such a tone to beg soone.

He was pleading.

No emotions showed on his face; he was always good at restraint, adept at being calm and rational in his madness and gambles, “Don’t stop .”

Zhai Wenjin thought for a mont and then let go of his hand.

He couldn’t be stopped.

And she believed in Xie Shang.

There were hospital security guards at the entrance, allowing exit but not entry, not only to ensure the safety of individuals but also to secure the hospital’s property. The more chaotic it was, the stricter the watch needed to be.

Upon seeing soone approaching, a security guard imdiately stretched out his hand to intercept, “Sir, you cannot enter.”

As soon as he finished speaking, the hand that was intercepting was caught by the other person. The guard hadn’t reacted yet when his wrist was twisted and pinned behind his back, and the intruder pushed him forward.

He had no strength to fight back and stumbled into the glass door. Holding onto his numb shoulder, he turned and yelled, “Sir!”

“Sir!”

Xie Shang crossed the isolation tape and entered the building.

The fire was actually not big and was within control; waiting was completely possible. But Xie Shang couldn’t wait; Wen Changling was different, she might not be able to hear.

Seventh floor, computer room.

The number on the mobile phone screen jumped from 99% to 100%.

The implantation was complete; Wen Changling unplugged the data cable, and after confirming there was no one outside using the machines as cover, she stepped out of her hiding corner.

There was a jacket on the chair; she took it, wet it in the nearby restroom to cover her mouth and nose, and, keeping low, headed towards the ergency exit along the corridor. The computer room was on the north side of the seventh floor, quite far from the point of ignition. There was no open fla in this area, but there was smoke.

The sign for the ergency exit was up ahead, lit with a green light; Wen Changling quickened her steps.

“Changling.”

She couldn’t hear it.

Xie Shang went over and grabbed her hand.

She turned around abruptly; in the swirling smoke, she saw Xie Shang’s face. Why was he here…

His lips moved slowly, forming the words with his mouth, “Let’s get out first.”

Wen Changling was dumbfounded as he pulled her along. Through the smoke, her vision blurry, she fixated on Xie Shang’s back, feeling an odd sense of unreality, as if in an illusion.

Had he co looking for her?

Once on the ground floor, it was safe. Xie Shang first called Su Beihe to report safety and told Su Beihe to take Madam Zhai ho first.

After hanging up, he looked at Wen Changling, “Where’s your phone? Why didn’t you answer the calls?”

Wen Changling stared blankly at him.

He used sign language, while also speaking slowly, “Why didn’t you answer my calls?”

During the trojan implantation, the mobile phone would automatically block incoming calls.

“I didn’t hear it,” Wen Changling took out the broken hearing aid from his pocket, “My hearing aid is broken, I was in the dispensary, I couldn’t hear.”

The alarm in the dispensary had just malfunctioned a few days ago, so she had intentionally stepped on and broken her hearing aid. She couldn’t get out right away; she needed a legitimate and unsuspicious reason.

Xie Shang stepped forward and embraced her.

“As long as you’re okay.”

The tension that had been building for so long suddenly released, causing a slight tremor in her vocal cords.

Held in the embrace, Wen Changling couldn’t hear. She lifted her hand and touched the sweat on Xie Shang’s neck, and sothing pricked her heart.

She rembered a question she had once asked Xie Shang.

[What lengths would you go to if you fell in love with soone?]

The patients from the VIP ward were temporarily moved to the oncology building. The fire hadn’t spread to other floors, so the damage wasn’t severe. The hospital imdiately arranged for repair work and to appease and compensate the VIP patients.

Once Jiahui had so free ti, she imdiately went to look for Wen Changling and wasn’t relieved until she saw he was okay.

“I was startled when Xie Shang called . I wondered why he called , then I realized he couldn’t get a hold of you,” Jiahui said. “He also called our head nurse.” Even she, an outsider, could see how much Xie Shang valued Wen Changling.

Wen Changling stood on the corridor, motionless, looking down.

“Why haven’t you taken so ti off to rest?”

Wen Changling said, “I’m fine.”

“Isn’t your hearing aid broken?” Jiahui looked at her left ear and saw that her hearing aid was okay.

“This one is a spare.”

Jiahui uttered an “Oh,” “I just heard the head nurse saying they found the person who was smoking. It was a family mber of a VIP patient. He was quite arrogant when the police took him away. Luckily the wind was blowing south today. There were no casualties.”

Wen Changling didn’t respond, lost in thought.

“Changling.”

She turned her head, “Hmm?”

Jiahui looked down, “What are you looking at?”

Wen Changling shook her head.

Xie Shang’s car was still parked below.

Wen Changling returned to the oncology departnt to change the dication for the patient she was responsible for. The duty head nurse of the VIP ward called a brief eting to address the incident and then organized everyone to transfer the equipnt from the VIP ward to the oncology building.

By the ti she had finished all this, it was nearly eleven.

Wen Changling passed by the corridor again. Xie Shang’s car was still there.

She called Xie Shang, “Why haven’t you gone back yet?” From where she stood, she could see the front of Xie Shang’s car, “I can see your car.”

Even though it was quite far away, she felt as if she could see Xie Shang lifting his head and looking towards her.

He said, “Changling, I need so ti to calm down.”

Wen Changling hung up the phone and went downstairs.

The car window was tapped.

Xie Shang got out of the car, “Why did you co down here? Aren’t you busy?”

Wen Changling took out a mask and put it on, pretending no one could recognize her intending to slack off, “I feel like you need

more.”

Xie Shang smiled, “No one knows it’s you anyway, give

a hug.”

She had the sa intention and hugged Xie Shang willingly.

“Changling, send

the paraters and test values you need for fitting your hearing aid.”

“What do you need them for?”

Xie Shang held her tightly, “To get you the best hearing aid.” He said, “You’ll have spares in every place you can put them.”

Wen Changling quietly agreed with a yes.

Actually, Jiahui had just asked her sothing.

“Changling,” Jiahui asked tentatively, “Can your ears be treated?”

“No, they can’t.”

She was a patient with severe hearing nerve damage, which was irreversible. She had completely lost hearing in her right ear, and her left had only residual hearing, relying on a hearing aid.

“I rember the head nurse once said you weren’t born unable to hear,” Jiahui inquired, “What happened?”

“When I was twelve, I dived into the water to save soone and lost my hearing.”

That year, Xie Shang was thirteen.

Wen Changling raised her hand and touched his ear.

Xie Shang, if I hadn’t gone into the water back then, would it be you who couldn’t hear?
