Morgan Hayes was just about to go to sleep when he received a call from Shane Sterling.
Shane Sterling said over the phone, "Officer Hayes, I found soone at a bar."
’Finding soone isn’t my jurisdiction,’ Morgan Hayes thought. ’Besides, I’m on vacation.’
A mont later, he heard Shane Sterling add, "It’s Annabelle Leighton."
Morgan Hayes imdiately asked, "What happened to her?"
"She’s drunk."
"Where is she?"
"I already took her ho, but there’s no one else here. My wife told to call you. She said you’d probably be willing to step in. So, Officer Hayes, will you?"
"What’s her address? I’m on my way."
Upon hearing that, Shane Sterling thought, ’Heh, this might actually work.’
He imdiately sent Annabelle Leighton’s address to Morgan Hayes.
Twenty minutes later, Morgan Hayes arrived at Annabelle Leighton’s ho.
Seeing that soone had finally co to take over, Shane Sterling quickly made his exit.
"Officer Hayes, I’ve got to get ho to my wife. I’ll be leaving her in your hands."
As Morgan Hayes walked Shane Sterling to the door, he said, "Mr. Sterling, I never got the chance to congratulate you and Miss Prescott in person. Congratulations, and I wish you both a lifeti of happiness together."
"Thank you." Shane Sterling glanced at Annabelle Leighton on the sofa and offered Morgan Hayes so encouragent. "You too. I hope to hear good news from you two soon."
Morgan Hayes instantly blushed.
After Shane Sterling left, Morgan Hayes and Annabelle Leighton were the only ones left in the living room.
Annabelle Leighton was asleep on the sofa, with only a trench coat draped over her.
’Morgan Hayes guessed Shane Sterling hadn’t gotten her a blanket because he felt it would be improper to enter her bedroom. But it would be just as improper for him.’
’What should I do?’
He hesitated by the sofa for a mont. But when he saw Annabelle shivering in her sleep, burrowing into a throw pillow for warmth, he hesitated no more. He turned and began trying one door after another, searching for her bedroom.
Annabelle Leighton’s bedroom was on the easternmost side of the large apartnt.
She’d been busy recently, often working late, so the bedroom was a little ssy.
The mont Morgan Hayes pushed the door open, he saw the duvet on her bed bunched up like a small hill. At the foot of the bed, two nightgowns were tossed in a heap.
They were new purchases, the tags still attached. The style was racy and sensual.
His eyes fell on them by accident, and he imdiately looked away. But that single glance at those two garnts was enough to make heat rush to one place.
’He felt like he was going crazy.’
’This had never happened in his twenty-plus years of being single.’
Morgan Hayes quickly grabbed a blanket and backed out of Annabelle Leighton’s bedroom.
On the sofa, Annabelle Leighton was sleeping restlessly.
When Morgan Hayes returned with the blanket, he heard her sobbing softly. One mont she’d call out for "Grandma," the next, for "Morgan Hayes."
She was apparently having a dream, and not a pleasant one at that.
Morgan Hayes covered her with the blanket, then heard her mumble his na again.
"Morgan Hayes... Morgan Hayes..."
Morgan Hayes was touched. He couldn’t resist reaching out to stroke her head. "I’m here."
As if she had really heard him, Annabelle Leighton suddenly opened her eyes.
Her eyes were brimming with tears. The mont they opened, they fell like pearls, splashing onto the back of Morgan Hayes’s hand.
Morgan Hayes felt as if he’d been scalded.
He rembered Levi Quinn telling him how, when he was injured, Annabelle had been so frantic outside the operating room she was on the verge of tears. Back then, he couldn’t imagine her crying. Now, he was seeing it with his own eyes.
When she cried, she looked so achingly vulnerable—a complete departure from her usual sharp, confident self. It was like she was a different person.
Morgan Hayes’s heart clenched.
"What happened?" he asked.
Suddenly, Annabelle Leighton wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him in for a kiss.
Morgan Hayes froze, completely caught off guard. By the ti he processed what was happening and moved to push her away, her tongue had already darted into his mouth, nimble as a little snake...
