BOOM!!!
Everyone’s mind went blank. Every single person present stared at Lin Xiao, completely petrified. This was especially true for Pei Donglai and Bai Chenglong.
Pei Donglai had followed Lin Xiao for a while, so he knew his identity and background were extraordinary. But he had never imagined, even in his wildest dreams, that Lin Xiao’s background could be so heaven-defying. He actually knew ng Daohuo, and their relationship seed incredibly strong.
Bai Chenglong was completely stunned by the scene. The man before him was clearly just a filthy beggar. How on earth did he know ng Daohuo? And how was their relationship so remarkably close? But that no longer seed to matter. What mattered was that Bai Chenglong knew he was finished—utterly and completely finished. His face ashen, he collapsed to the ground, his eyes filled with nothing but despair.
Lin Xiao ignored their shock, cracking a grin. "I didn’t want to bother you," he said. "Besides, I had no idea you were in the Jinling Military Region!"
"Cut the crap. You just didn’t want to co see ," ng Daohuo chided with a laugh.
Lin Xiao chuckled but didn’t reply.
It was true; Lin Xiao knew ng Daohuo, and their relationship was quite good. But this connection had nothing to do with his senior brother, the Human Emperor. The reason Lin Xiao knew ng Daohuo was because the old man shared a close private friendship with Lin Xiao’s own grandmaster. Lin Xiao rembered that back when the old man was the head of the Western Region, he’d often visited Kunlun to drink with his grandmaster. More than once, he had tried to get Lin Xiao to accept him as an honorary grandfather, but Lin Xiao, rebellious back then, had always refused. Co to think of it, it had been two or three years since they had last seen each other.
"So, you little brat, you’re Su Qingning’s husband?" ng Daohuo asked.
Lin Xiao nodded, beaming. "What do you think? I’m pretty lucky, aren’t I?"
"Humph, then why haven’t you hurried up and brought my granddaughter-in-law over for this old bag of bones to see?" ng Daohuo insisted.
"No rush. Let’s wait a bit longer," Lin Xiao said with a laugh.
ng Daohuo understood the implication in his words and smiled. "Fine. But you have to have a drink with tonight!"
"Can’t do it. I’ve already made plans with soone else tonight. When I have so free ti, I’ll naturally co find you for a drink!" Lin Xiao bluntly turned him down.
"You brat, you’re breaking my heart!"
"Then let it break!"
ng Daohuo glared at Lin Xiao, but there was no trace of genuine anger in his eyes.
"By the way, old man, what brings you here? Didn’t I contact Old Dong from the Western Region?" Lin Xiao asked curiously.
Just a mont ago, Lin Xiao had sent a ssage to Dong Chengzhuo, the commander of the Western Region, explaining the entire situation. Yes, Lin Xiao knew Dong Chengzhuo. He had made the connection a couple of years ago while visiting his senior brother, the Human Emperor. At the ti, Dong Chengzhuo had been discussing matters concerning the Western Region with his senior brother, and the Human Emperor had made the introduction. Later, as Dong Chengzhuo was leaving, he specifically asked Lin Xiao for his phone number.
Lin Xiao had assud Dong Chengzhuo would handle the matter personally, so he was surprised to see ng Daohuo show up instead.
When Bai Chenglong heard Lin Xiao’s words, his already pale face turned completely bloodless, and he stared at Lin Xiao in absolute terror. The fact that Lin Xiao knew ng Daohuo was already astounding enough for him. He never could have imagined that he also knew the commander of the Western Region, and that their relationship was apparently just as remarkable. A mont ago, Bai Chenglong had been secretly trying to figure out Lin Xiao’s origins, but after hearing this, he lost all desire to speculate.
He was beginning to realize who Lin Xiao was. With that realization, his fear suddenly vanished, replaced by an utter, chilling calm. This wasn’t because he thought he was out of trouble. It was the calm that cos from utter hopelessness, a despair that saw no way out.
Pei Donglai was equally shocked. He had thought Lin Xiao knowing ng Daohuo was incredible enough, but he had never expected him to also know the commander of the Western Region. He began to frantically speculate about who Lin Xiao truly was.
Suddenly, an idea flashed through Pei Donglai’s mind like a bolt of lightning. He seed to have realized sothing, and his gaze shot toward Lin Xiao.
Just then, ng Daohuo smiled and said, "Old Dong was worried you might get the short end of the stick, kid, so he specially called to handle this for you!"
"So that’s how it is. Alright, you’ve handled it, so hurry up and take your n and go. Otherwise, people might get the wrong idea about my wife’s bar," Lin Xiao said, telling them it was ti to leave.
"You brat, you don’t need to clean up the ss?"
"No need. It’s all settled!"
ng Daohuo nodded. "Alright, I’ll be going then. Pei Donglai, you’re coming with !"
"No!" Lin Xiao retorted.
"Why not?"
"Pei Donglai is my wife’s number one bodyguard now. If he leaves, who’s going to protect her bar?"
"You little rascal, you think I don’t know what level your cultivation is at?" ng Daohuo scoffed with a laugh.
Lin Xiao said stubbornly, "Old ng, Pei Donglai really can’t go with you. At least not right now!"
ng Daohuo sighed helplessly. "Fine. If you want him to stay, he can stay."
Lin Xiao grinned. "You’re the best, Old ng! Once I have so ti, I’ll co find you for that drink!"
"I’m holding you to that, kid!" ng Daohuo said with a smile.
"Mhm, mhm, you’d better rember!"
Laughing heartily, ng Daohuo left the security office. Yuan Guohai smiled and nodded at Lin Xiao and Pei Donglai, then waved his hand. The uniford n who had co with Bai Chenglong retreated swiftly, vanishing without a trace in an instant.
The large security office fell silent.
Just as Pei Donglai was about to speak, Bai Chenglong burst into tears. "War God, I was wrong! I truly know I was wrong! Please, for the sake of once being your subordinate, help put in a good word! I genuinely want to serve my country! If you just help this one ti, I’ll sever all ties with the Bai family, return to the army, and I’ll never co back again!"
He had wanted to plead with Lin Xiao directly, but ever since realizing who Lin Xiao was, he hadn’t dared to even look at him, let alone speak to him.
Pei Donglai remained silent, his eyes fixed on Lin Xiao, seemingly awaiting his decision.
Lin Xiao suddenly asked, "Pei Donglai, how was he when he served under you?"
"Reporting to the Captain, he was brave and fierce. He lived up to the title of a soldier," Pei Donglai replied in a solemn tone.
Lin Xiao couldn’t tell if Pei Donglai was unable to let go of his past camaraderie with Bai Chenglong or if he simply cherished his talent. But since his words carried a hint of a plea on Bai Chenglong’s behalf, Lin Xiao couldn’t let him down.
"Alright. Go ahead and do as you said. I’ll put in a word for you with the military region."
Bai Chenglong was stunned for a mont, but his shock was imdiately followed by a wave of imnse joy that completely washed over him. Without another word, he kowtowed deeply to Lin Xiao. After getting to his feet, he said respectfully, "Thank you!"
With that, he turned to leave.
"Wait," Lin Xiao said nonchalantly.
