Not a request, but a command.
The fiery lasso tightened, drawing in closer and closer. The trapped house-elf demon let out a sharp, agonized scream.
Though Dumbledore’s flas left no visible burns on his body, he writhed and convulsed, looking very painful, uncomfortable, and cruelly tortured.
For a mont, Evan, Harry, Hermione, Elaine, and Ron exchanged uncertain glances.
This was a demon?
Where was the fear? Where was the power? Where was the majesty of the demon?
This thing was so weak. Pathetically weak.
Faced with Dumbledore’s fla bondage, he didn’t even offer a token resistance.
It was surprising, considering this wasn’t so powerful magic.
And yet, Evan had another asure by which to prove he was indeed weak: magic power.
Summoning him had taken so little energy that, for Evan, it barely registered as a drain at all. It was no more taxing than casting two or three Disarming Charms. If such a weak expenditure of magic could summon this creature, then how strong could he possibly be?!
“Damn it, damn it, stop, stop this magic, what do you want to ask? I’ll tell you everything.”
Under Dumbledore’s control, the golden-red flas retreated slightly, expanding outward to grant the demon so space.
“Damn wizards, it’s always been like this, that’s why I hate you,” said the demon angrily, his face twisted. “What do you greedy guys want to ask? Let go back quickly, I don’t want to stay here.”
“We want to know sothing about Hufflepuff,” said Evan, “about the ssage she left behind…”
Before he could finish, the demon’s hateful expression shifted abruptly to one of surprise.
“Hufflepuff? You an Helga Hufflepuff?!”
“Yes,” said Evan. This guy’s reaction was strange. “You know her?”
“Of course I know her. Headmistress of Hogwarts, renowned witch, famous Seer. Who doesn’t know her?” The demon replied irritably. “I must admit that she did help us a lot at that ti, but if you want to know about her from , you have found the wrong person. You should be asking her pitiful friend instead, not .”
Pitiful friend?
“Who is this friend you’re talking about?” Evan asked.
“The elf traitor, of course. That disgraceful coward. He has long since surrendered to the wizards. He wanted to stop because I have been calling on the elves to rebel against the wizards. We could fight…” He began to talk about the war between house-elves and wizards that had taken place a thousand years ago.
Because of how much ti had passed, and because not many wizards were concerned with the history of house-elves, there was only a small description of this period in the history of magic: wizards had conquered house-elves through external expansion, and since then, elves had beco a subordinate race of wizards. The magic and servility in their blood had made them serve their masters from generation to generation.
There was no record of the details of the war.
Although the words spoken by this house-elf demon were incoherent and the main points were unclear, it could be barely heard that he was an eyewitness to this ancient war and advocated fighting against wizards. To be precise, he was a hero, a hero belonging to the house-elves.
In the war with wizards, the house-elves eventually lost their hos, and many of them beca captives of wizards.
Hufflepuff took in so house-elves. This demon seed to have found so powerful magic item in the castle. He thought he could change the outco of the war, but at the last mont, he was betrayed by the traitor he ntioned and was kept in Hogwarts forever in the form of a demon.
He didn’t say exactly what that magic item was, but it was clearly the source of his power to transform into a demon.
This period of history was quite interesting, and Hermione listened very carefully.
Dumbledore seed to be interested in the topic as well and did not interrupt him.
Elaine, however, was a little impatient. This house-elf demon had overturned her understanding of demons. She no longer felt any fear or nervousness. She had no interest in this history at all. This place was so cold and she wanted to go back.
Finally, she asked impatiently, “Who is this he you keep talking about?”
“I told you, it’s that traitor, that coward…”
“What’s his na?”
There was a mont of silence.
The long passage of ti seed to have eroded the demon’s mory of his enemy’s na. He could only hurl insults … traitor, coward … spitting out his old hatred with venomous loathing.
Soon, the demon seed to think of sothing.
His expression beca distorted again, “Of course it’s Dodo, that traitor, I will never forget him!”
“Dodo…” Evan had an impression of this na. When he had first traveled back in ti to Hogwarts a thousand years ago, Hufflepuff had once asked her house-elf, Dodo, to bring him an assortnt of treats she had made herself — strange, unforgettable snacks with flavors so peculiar they had been burned into his mory.
Following his taste mory, Evan rembered a house elf: he was very neatly dressed, unusually wearing an actual outfit, and…
“It is Dodo! That traitor, that coward! Who else would willingly serve wizards as their servant?!” said the house-elf demon indignantly. “He simply regarded Hufflepuff as everything. Even after her death, he chose to stay in this wretched place. Then he spread his twisted philosophy to the others, brainwashing them into volunteering their labor for the castle’s wizards! Have you heard the nonsense he preached?! What did he turn house-elves into?!”
The only house-elf who willingly served wizards? Who encouraged others to do the sa?
That would be nothing unusual today, would it?
Today’s house-elves were not just servants, but slaves and private property of their wizards. Not to ntion serving the wizards, they were willing to devote everything they had. They did not need wages, holidays, or any benefits. They took pride in their labor and saw freedom as disgraceful.
So even wished for their masters to cut off their heads after death and mount them on the wall as decorations.
Inside the fire-ring before Evan, the house-elf demon continued his furious tirade against Dodo, cursing him for betraying house-elf dignity and serving Hufflepuff and the other wizards of Hogwarts.
Clearly, the hatred ran deep. Even after a thousand years, the grudge had not faded.
To be honest, the demon should take a trip upstairs. He needed to see for himself what house-elves had beco.
