Voldemort wanted to kill his captive, Charity Burbage.
She is the Muggle Studies professor at Hogwarts.
He wanted to kill her for teaching the subject and penning an article suggesting that Muggles should be treated as equals to pure bloods.
Right at that ti John appeared on the long table in front of Voldemort and other death eaters.
