Chapter 2 : Observe and Adapt

· · ─ ·✶· ─ · ·

Arios leaned back in his chair, his arms folded across his chest, his eyes thodically scanning the classroom. The first day of school wasn’t over yet, and he was already feeling the weight of Class D’s reputation. The afternoon sun stread through the window beside him, painting a lazy golden haze over the room. The air inside felt... well, a little too relaxed. No one seed to take this place seriously, and that bothered him.

A few students were laughing loudly in the back. A couple more were already asleep, their heads resting on their desks. One group had their school-issued tablets out, watching videos instead of paying attention. It was pure chaos, and what was worse, nobody seed to mind.

So this is the bottom of the barrel, Arios thought, a bitter taste in his mouth. It wasn’t a surprise. He’d seen it all before in the ani—Class D was always a collection of the unmotivated, the unfocused, and the people who just didn’t care. But seeing it firsthand, feeling the palpable lack of ambition, made it feel so much more real. And so much worse.

[Quest: Observe and Adapt – Day 1][Progress: 0%]

[Objective: Build a profile on five classmates.]

[Tip: Start simple. Watch. Listen. Don’t rush.]

Fine. He’d play along. He was a new student in a new school, and he had to start sowhere. Arios began with the closest student, the one at the front. The guy wore square glasses, had gelled hair, and was constantly twitching, typing furiously on his tablet as if his life depended on it. Arios rembered him—Greg Tunley. Smart, but completely spineless. He was the type to crumble under pressure and always agreed with whoever spoke the loudest.

Too easy to manipulate. Obviously won’t be reliable.

Next, he shifted his focus to the right, across two rows, where a tall guy sat with his feet up on the desk, his hands behind his head. He had an athletic build and looked half-asleep. This was Rian Blake. A natural athlete who relied on raw talent but was a disaster when it ca to academics. He was known for his short temper and for breaking every school rule he could find.

He’s Strong, pretty predictable and desperataly in need of directions.

Two seats down and one row up, he spotted a girl with bright orange hair styled in two thick braids. She was chewing gum with a ferocity that seed personal, whispering nonstop to the friend beside her. Liza Garnet. Loud, gossipy, and always at the center of any drama. But Arios noticed sothing else. Every so often, she would stop her chatter and her eyes would flick around the room, lingering on certain people—Kyousuke, Elisa, even the teacher—for a second longer than necessary.

She’s not dumb. Just loud on purpose.

Then, his gaze fell on the girl by the window. Long, silver hair. Perfect posture. She wasn’t talking to anyone, just staring out the window with a quiet intensity. Elisa Ravencroft.

In the ani, she was the heroine with a mysterious air and hints of a deep backstory, but her potential was never fully explored. Rumors said she ca from a noble background. She was cold and blunt, the kind of person who spoke only when it was absolutely necessary.

Finally, Arios looked to the back corner. There was a guy hunched over a sketchpad, headphones in, barely moving.

I don’t rember him at all, Arios thought, a genuine flicker of confusion crossing his face. He’d watched the ani twice, morizing every detail he could. Background characters were usually irrelevant, but he couldn’t recall seeing this student.

[Target: Unknown. No profile found.]

The system hadn’t logged anything. Strange. He made a ntal note to keep an eye on him and then looked away.

Mr. Calborne returned a mont later, dropping a thick stack of booklets on the front desk with a heavy thud. "Alright," he announced, his voice echoing in the sudden silence. "Ti for a little academic reality check."

A few students groaned in unison.

"These are placent tests. They aren’t for a grade, just to show us what you know. Or, more likely, what you don’t."

Greg nervously raised his hand. "Um, sir, will this affect our monthly points?"

"No," Calborne said flatly, already handing out the booklets. "But it will determine how seriously I treat you."

That was enough to make Greg shut up.

Arios accepted the booklet without a word. Fifty questions. A mix of subjects. No calculators allowed. He flipped through the pages, his eyes scanning the questions. It wasn’t hard—at least, not if you’d paid attention in junior classes. But he knew that for half of the students in this room, it would be an impossible task. They probably wouldn’t even finish.

· · ─ ·✶· ─ · ·

Ti crawled by, marked only by the scratching of pens, a few sneezes, and the occasional creak of a chair. Arios focused, answering each question thodically.

Let’s not stand out too fast, he cautioned himself. There was no need to show his full hand on the very first day. He finished with a respectable 80% accuracy, closed the booklet, and waited patiently for the others to finish.

When the test was finally over, Mr. Calborne collected everything and stuffed them into a satchel. "Get used to this," he said, his gaze sweeping across the class. "Every week, you’ll be tested, ranked, and judged. You want to get to Class A? Then start acting like it. Otherwise, enjoy your current position."

With that final, dismissive statent, he left the room.

The tension broke instantly. Students began to chat, their voices filling the silence. Rian leaned back and playfully threw a paper ball at Greg, who flinched. Elisa stood up, quietly and efficiently packing her bag without a single wasted motion.

Below average all around. He wasn’t a genius, a sports star, or a natural leader. He was just... average. But he’d take it. At least the numbers were honest. There was no point in starting with a lie.

The final bell of the day rang, a loud, jarring sound that signaled the end of the first day. Arios stood, grabbed his bag, and headed for the door. Just as he stepped into the hallway, a voice stopped him.

"Hey," a cool, clear voice said from behind him.

He turned. Elisa Ravencroft was standing by the doorway, her arms crossed. Her expression was unreadable, but her tone held a hint of genuine curiosity. "You spent all day without saying a word."

Arios t her gaze without flinching. "Neither did you."

The faintest hint of a smile touched her lips. "Fair point," she replied. She held his gaze for another mont, as if she were trying to solve a puzzle, before she turned and walked away without another word.

Arios stepped outside, the late afternoon sun a warm relief on his skin.

So it begins, he thought, a sense of purpose settling over him. He wasn’t here to be a side character, a background face in soone else’s story. He would climb, slowly and quietly, learning every detail of this new world. And when the ti ca, he’d take the spotlight.
