When Special Assistant Langley arrived, he was t with the sight of Caleb Sinclair looking lost and disheartened.
Startled by the scene, he quickly walked in and asked, "Mr. Sinclair, are you alright? Are you feeling unwell? Should I get a doctor to take a look at you?"
At the sound of his voice, Caleb Sinclair looked up at him, pausing in a daze as sensation gradually returned to his body.
The darkness surrounding him seed to dissipate in the bright light of the office area.
In just that mont, he felt utterly exhausted.
Removing his glasses, he pinched the bridge of his nose, and his usually gentle and pleasant voice now sounded as if it had rolled over rough gravel.
Conveying a hint of weariness, "No need."
With that, he made his way toward the office.
Special Assistant Langley followed him, and once they were inside the office, he closed the door and locked it, speaking up, "Mr. Sinclair, I’ve made progress on the two matters you asked to investigate."
Caleb Sinclair was montarily startled, his eyes trembled, and his heart pounded.
He spoke in a hoarse voice, "Tell ."
Special Assistant Langley said, "The owner of that string of numbers is indeed a seventy-so-year-old elderly person who passed away half a month ago. She was living in a high-end nursing ho and suffered from Alzheir’s, sotis lucid, sotis confused."
Caleb Sinclair found it unbelievable and looked up at him, "Are you trying to tell that the person who sent those ssages is dead? And was a madwoman before she died?"
Special Assistant Langley was also very surprised when he discovered this.
It felt eerily unsettling.
After a mont of contemplation, he said, "That hacker didn’t find any encryption on that number. There’s only one explanation then; soone found the elderly woman’s phone card. But..."
There was a flaw in this explanation.
The elderly woman had always stayed in the high-end nursing ho, never went out, and was only taken to the funeral ho for cremation after her death by her family.
Caleb Sinclair furrowed his brows, "What’s the na of this elderly woman?"
Special Assistant Langley shook his head, "The nursing ho has her listed as Grandma Grant. It seems she didn’t have any children; the ones who visited her and handled her affairs were her two nieces and nephews."
Caleb Sinclair rubbed his fingers, "Then look into her nieces and nephews, mainly to find out what happened to her phone after she died. It’s also possible she dropped it at the nursing ho, and soone picked it up there."
"Yes, I understand."
Caleb Sinclair clenched his fist tighter, his eyes darkening, reluctant to face another piece of information, yet eager for Special Assistant Langley’s investigation result.
His throat rolled, and he finally squeezed out so notes, "Anything on the whistleblower’s matter?"
Special Assistant Langley’s expression was complex. After hesitating for a few seconds, he took out his phone, tapped it a few tis, and held it out in front of him.
In a low voice, he said, "The hacker sent a recording."
Caleb Sinclair’s brow furrowed deeper as he lightly touched the play button.
Three or four seconds later, a familiar female voice erged, "Hello, I’m formally reporting that the Radiance Beauty Spa on Prosperity Avenue in the city center is involved in organized prostitution activities underground."
This voice...
Caleb Sinclair’s pupils froze, and his chest felt as if a heavy hamr had struck it, shaking his internal organs out of place.
After the recording ended, he remained stiff for a full minute before holding his breath and shakily replaying the recording.
He seed to spiral into endless madness, or perhaps self-torture, replaying the recording over and over again.
For about five minutes, every word in that recording poured into his veins like scorching lava, burning his flesh and soul endlessly.
Special Assistant Langley could hardly bear to watch, pulling him back to rationality from his emotional state, "Mr. Sinclair, the hacker ntioned that the source of this recording is a trade secret of theirs,
and they are unwilling to disclose it, so this recording still needs further verification. It’s possible... it just sounds similar to..."
Similar?
How could it be just similar?
This voice was clearly Sienna Monroe’s herself.
They had been in love for six years. How could he not recognize her voice?
Whether she was happy, angry, or sad, he could always tell.
He rembered those two strange text ssages again.
So, everything ntioned in the texts was true...
It was all true...
He unconsciously murmured these words, his heart suddenly ached, and his limbs went cold, as though he had been thrown into a bottomless ice pit.
In an instant, his body lost balance, and his knees felt as if they had been drained of bones, while the ground turned into a slanting deck.
He lost control and fell off the chair, kneeling on the floor.
The one who reported the Radiance Beauty Spa was really her.
She had been deceiving him all along.
She had been acting.
She had been using him.
She knew everything.
It was all fake.
Fake...
A sharp pain suddenly pierced his chest as if a blade had run through it, and a burst of rusty sweetness surged in his throat.
Cough—
His face flushed crimson as he let out a heavy cough, and a trace of blood spattered on the floor, resembling a red plum blossom in the winter snow.
So... this is what it feels like to be betrayed and deceived by the person you love most.
So... when the heart is in extre pain, you really do cough up blood.
Special Assistant Langley was shocked, calling "Mr. Sinclair" several tis, but in Caleb Sinclair’s ears, all he heard was indistinct tinnitus.
Just as he was about to call an ambulance, Caleb Sinclair suddenly grabbed his hand.
"Don’t call, I want to be alone for a while."
He struggled to push out a difficult sound from his shattered throat, mingled with heavy panting.
Special Assistant Langley was worried, "Mr. Sinclair..."
The veins on Caleb Sinclair’s forehead bulged as he lost patience, like he was about to unleash the anger compressed in his chest.
"Don’t you understand? I want you to leave! I want to be alone! Or do you want to stay here and continue watching make a fool of myself?!"
Special Assistant Langley opened his mouth, knowing it was hard for him to accept this fact right now, said nothing in the end, nodded slightly, and took his phone before leaving.
Just as he reached the door, a hoarse, tearing voice ca from behind, "Send the recording. Buy the recording from the hacker; delete the one in your phone too."
Special Assistant Langley froze for a mont, not seeing anyone when he looked back, but he replied, "Yes."
Once he left, the vast office quieted down.
Caleb Sinclair lay numb, remaining in a kneeling position, his eyes dulled and painful as he stared at the trace of blood on the floor.
What should he do now?
Take the recording back and confront Sienna Monroe?
Ask whether the one who reported Radiance Beauty Spa was really her? And then why she did this?
What if she admitted?
What decision should he make then?
And what if she took the opportunity to co clean and filed for divorce?
[She and Sebastian Prescott have long had a different kind of relationship, waiting for her goals to be achieved before she would abandon you without hesitation.]
This sentence suddenly flashed in his mind.
His heart abruptly halted.
Goals?
What would her goal be?
To send mom to jail, then divorce him and be with Sebastian Prescott?
