"Madam Yu, this was not our intention," Murong Tai said to Yu Dong who continued smiling.
She did not care whether or not the Murong family had this intention or not, it remained a fact that neither of them ca to relay the information to Yu Tong until the rumour was spread all over the village, even Murong Si who ca to look for Yu Tong could feel that sothing weird was going on, how co Old madam Murong and Murong Tai couldn't?
They knew that there was a possibility that Yu Tong was not aware of the engagent but they stayed quiet until Yu Tong couldn't refuse the engagent anymore. If Murong Si was not worried about Yu Tong not turning up on the day of the wedding, Yu Dong was certain that Yu Tong would have found out about her being engaged and a wedding being held a week or two before.
Yu Dong was not a fool who couldn't understand sothing so simple. The Murong family and Second Madam Yu thought that they were too smart, they never expected that Murong Si would make a move on his own, which led to their plans being thrown into a ss. Of course, Yu Dong was worried about getting a r as smart and quick-witted as Murong Si in her family.
He was the one who created this ss and yet no one found out until the last mont, that it was Murong Si who delivered the news to Yu Tong.
'He is really smart. Even now, I have no idea what that r is planning,' Yu Dong thought worriedly. She truly wanted to interrogate Murong Si but she couldn't as it might cause more disruption.
The fact that he relayed the information of the engagent was nagging in Yu Dong's head. Was it because he wanted to tell Yu Tong about their engagent or was there so other reason?
However, Yu Dong did not have the ti to worry about Murong Si.
She raised her head and said, "Old Madam Murong, I am not refusing to accept responsibility. But you have to know that none of the betrothal gifts reached Ah Tong, so how could we even consider them getting engaged? If you do not believe us then you can question the villagers. We did not even see a needle much less a childhood mory being handed down to Yu Tong as a confirmation of the engagent."
"My sister and Brother Hanjing have long established their relationship, everyone in the village knows that my sister likes Brother Hanjing more than anything. If we stop her from marrying Brother Hanjing then it will only cause a rift between your son and Ah Tong. At least if you accept this arrangent, your son will be treated well rather than an enemy by my cousin.
You do want a grandchild right?"
"Moreover we are not in the wrong. Since the engagent gifts were not delivered to us, we can always refuse this arrangent. However, a r's reputation is at stake and this is the only reason why we are willing to accept the arrangent. I think that this should be enough for you to be happy."
Old Madam Murong was quite livid when she heard that the betrothal gifts never reached Yu Tong. It seed like Second Madam Yu and her son had fooled them all! One acted all sweet and innocent while the other one fueled their desires with her glib tongue!
When Yu Dong saw Old Madam Murong's expression she knew that he was angry. However, she had no intentions of calming the old woman down, Yu Cheng needed to learn a lesson or two as well. That man thought that he could do anything just because his family doted on him and it was certainly not a good thing. If this went on then Yu Cheng might cause so big trouble for them.
At least with this trouble that she was sending his mother's way, Yu Cheng would learn how to keep his greed in check at least.
"But we have handed the gifts to Madam Yu," Old Madam Murong said to Yu Dong who casually lifted a shoulder and then said to the latter, "This has nothing to do with us. We found out about this engagent through a stroke of luck, if we didn't then Ah Tong would have found out about the engagent a day or two before. I am not blaming anyone but Ah Tong is also a victim in this scenario."
Yu Dong then splayed her hand in front of her and said, "Of course, if you want to cancel the engagent then you would have to take this matter to Second Madam Yu, who is responsible for it."
Yu Dong dared to say this because she knew that Old Madam Murong would definitely not agree to break off the engagent. Sure enough, no sooner did Yu Dong finish speaking, than Old Madam Murong's expression changed. She agitatedly said, "No, the engagent cannot be broken!" Explore more stories at empire
Murong Si was her oldest and most beautiful son, if he was killed then what would happen to all the plans she had for him? The benefits does she plan to get through this marriage? What about them? The engagent could never be broken!
"Our Murong village does not accept rs who have broken off their engagent. If you refuse to accept my son then, the only path that he will have in front of him would be death! How can that be allowed?" Old Madsm Murong said to Yu Dong who was already aware of the fact that if the r from the Murong village was to break off their engagent, they would be killed.
Though she did not want an innocent r to die, Yu Dong pretended as if she did not care about the life and death of Murong Si. She shrugged and remarked, "I believe that this is more of your loss than mine. So, should you not be agreeing to whatever conditions we put in front of you?"
