A sonic boom, also known as a sound explosion or boom, is the explosive noise created when shock waves from a supersonic aircraft reach the ground.
As an aircraft flies, it compresses and pushes away the air in front. When the flight velocity exceeds the speed of sound, a shock wave forms at the front of the aircraft, while at the tail, a shock wave forms as the displaced air cos back together.
A sonic boom occurs the instant a fighter jet exceeds the speed of sound.
Hearing the sonic boom ant the J-8B had flown faster than the speed of sound (Mach 1).
At that mont, the J-8B in the eyes of the observers was just a tiny black dot. Fortunately, it wasn’t long before the black dot turned around and flew back, its speed no longer as fast as before.
As it approached the airport, the J-8B perford several difficult maneuvers, including rapid ascents and descents, wide-arc turns, and a semi-low-level flight.

The person in charge of the test departnt notified the pilot to prepare for landing.
The J-8B executed a quick landing and then taxied slowly back to the starting point.
The cockpit opened.
