Society, everywhere, is often filled with injustices.
Liu Chengjie was one of those oppressed by the injustices. Compared with Zhang Wei, his situation was depicted with a certain sense of drama, particularly where ’luck’ was concerned.
Both were educated to an equivalent level, both were about twenty-seven when they earned their Ph.D. degrees at Yanhua University, then started working at the Biodical Research Institute.
Zhang Wei was lucky. After joining the Biodical Research Institute, she started working on a project with Dai Tianqing. She received a lot of care and attention. She’d initially known nothing and gradually gained experience, produced research results, published several articles, and was then ’promoted’ to Deputy Researcher.
Having been a Deputy Researcher for two years now, working on collaborative projects with others and her personal projects, she has accumulated quite a wealth of experience.
Zhang Wei is only thirty-two, and in the context of the research institute, one could say her future is promising.
Liu Chengjie, on the other hand, is the opposite. After joining the Institute, he went abroad with a researcher. When that researcher returned a year later, he had no ti to take special care of him.
And...
To date, Liu Chengjie has had very limited experience and has achieved little. Soon, his contract is due to expire, and he is facing the dilemma of being forced to leave the institute.
That’s an issue of luck.
Of course.
To so extent, perhaps its also related to appearance. Cheerful and attractive won tend to receive preferential treatnt, and that seems to be accepted as normal.
Liu Chengjie, who is quite average-looking, not good at talking or getting things done, and lacks noticeable skills, finds it hard to attract special attention from others.
Whatever the reasons, Liu Chengjie is the one being ’oppressed by injustice’
Given they have similar educational backgrounds and career experiences, Zhang Wei understands Liu Chengjie and is willing to guide him in his work.
After listening to Zhao Yi’s description of the ’potential process,’ Zhang Wei imdiately realized the ’high likelihood,’ and promptly began designing the experint.
To avoid wasting a lot of ti and money on futile experints, she first designed the simplest experints with a few directly asurable data points for imdiate validation.
While Zhang Wei was designing the experint, she was also explaining to Liu Chengjie why the experint was designed this way.
Liu Chengjie had a strong foundation. He quickly understood, thought through and supplented the experintal design.
Both of them were enthusiastic about their work.
Liu Chengjie was extrely enthusiastic because the success or failure of the research project might directly affect his job. He recorded each data point very carefully, taking the experint very seriously.
Soon...
The calculated data ca out.
"Sister Zhang."
Liu Chengjie, holding the data form and sowhat excited, said, "Look at these data - the protein, T-cells, phagocytic cells, ... all fit our anticipations!"
A smile appeared on Zhang Wei’s solemn face. She took the form, read every data point, and nodded, "In that case, let’s prepare for tomorrow’s experint. By the way, I’ll submit an application to Director Yan later, you go to our partner hospital to get so materials. We need to prepare today for the next round of experints tomorrow morning."
"OK!"
Zhang Wei left the laboratory with her folder and bumped into Dai Tianqing who was coming in.
Dai Tianqing seed a bit excited and quickly asked Zhang Wei, "Has Zhao Yi left?"
"He left a while ago."
"Such a sha, I should have called..." Dai Tianqing seed to regret a bit when he murmured, and then he said to Zhang Wei, "Why don’t you return, and let Xiao Liu handle things here."
Just when Zhang Wei was about to say sothing, Dai Tianqing interrupted, "Isn’t there just an ongoing project here? You can carry that on your own. It’s unlikely to yield results in half a year or a year. We’ve just made a significant breakthrough."
He then took a deep breath and lowered his voice, "Don’t tell anyone, we have found that inhibitor factor released by immune cells that Zhao Yi ntioned."
"You found it?" Zhang Wei was quite surprised.
"Um-hmm."
Dai Tianqing continued, "It was just a coincidence. We found a new substance that was present in very small amounts. We don’t have a confird detection thod or know which specific cell releases it, but we can prove that there is indeed an additional substance. Unless sothing surprising happens, it should be the inhibitor factor."
"You must understand how significant this discovery is. If you co back to join our verification work, within a few months at least, we’ll accumulate enough findings for a high-impact paper."
Zhang Wei nodded as she listened.
If it were in the past, she might have given it so consideration. Papers are important to everyone involved in research. A high-impact paper is virtually equivalent to a work achievent and a crucial factor when it cos to getting promoted to ’Researcher.’
But now things are different.
After hearing Zhao Yi’s deductive analysis, she felt it was more promising to stay in Zhao Yi’s lab and continue the research project, because no one else would share the results.
In Dai Tianqing’s lab, she’s just one of many researchers, and no matter how significant the project, she only gets to present minor results.
But now, only Zhao Yi and Liu Chengjie, along with herself, would share the results. Even if she only got a third of the results, the personal achievent from the whole project would be substantial.
Zhang Wei shook her head and declined, "I’d like to stay. Our project is already making progress."
