After apologizing, Anning practically held her breath for a few seconds. Her fingers fisted the bed spread beneath them but even after a few seconds, the room was still silent.

The only sound in the room ca from the faint chirping of birds in a distance, but Anning didn’t mind. She decided to wait, why? Because she was the one in the wrong.

She was sure Wanqing was going to say sothing, maybe tell her apologizing wasn’t even necessary or that she should stop looking so guilty.

"I’m hungry." Wanqing finally said, snapping Anning out of her thoughts.

Anning raised a brow and blurted, "What?"

Wanqing ran a hand through her hair, closing her eyes as she drew in a small breath.

"I haven’t eaten all day. Go to the kitchen and get so food." Wanqing said softly.

Anning’s mouth fell open in disbelief, for a mont, Anning was totally sure she was hearing things.

"Did you not hear what I just said?" Wanqing snapped, frowning. She cracked open one eyes and looked directly at her.

"I heard you, young miss. I should be the one asking if you heard ." Anning muttered the last part of her sentence under her breath.

But the look Wanqing gave her after she was done speaking said everything. ’I heard you, but do you think I care?’

Anning instantly regretted apologizing. The regret hit her so hard that she nearly choked. It was obvious she wasn’t the type of person who apologized.

In fact, she detested apologizing. Half the ti, she’d rather die than admit she was wrong.

And this was one of the reasons. This woman she had actually felt pity for, had the audacity to ignore her heartfelt apology as though she had just said sothing stupid.

Anning bit hard on her lower lip, then exhaled, "I understand."

She stood up so quickly, the things she placed on the bed including the alcohol nearly tipped over. But she didn’t care.

"You food. Right, I’ll go get that." She glanced at Wanqing one more ti, then with an annoyed huff. She spun around and marched toward the door.

Behind her, Wanqing stared at her back with a blank expression. It wasn’t that she didn’t hear her, she just didn’t have the strength to entertain her.

By the ti Anning reached the kitchen. She was still furious. That feeling you get that makes you want to complain to absolutely anyone willing to listen.

Now, walking into the kitchen didn’t reduce her anger. The kitchen was utterly packed, with servants moving around with diced up at, bowls and pots with steam rising from the pots.

Their voices overlapped each other’s while the sll of broth and other spices filled the air.

Anning barely managed to squeeze through the doorway when soone shoved her to the side with a basket.

"Watch where you are going!" The person yelled, sounding annoyed.

Another unfortunate servant nearly stepped on her foot. Anning glared at the said servant and that had the servant running off before she could even speak.

The urge for her to start a fight was becoming stronger by each second. Fortunately, before she could do anything reckless, the head cook spotted her.

"There you are, I was already considering sending another maid up with these." The head cook said as she hurried over carrying two trays.

One was large and filled with enough food that could actually feed an entire family, while the other was smaller.

The cook shoved both into Anning’s arms before she got to protest. Anning stared at the tray now in her hands and then stared at the head cook.

"Why are you still standing? Young Miss hasn’t eaten anything today, you should hurry." The head cook half yelled with a frown on her face.

Anning adjusted her grip on the trays, realizing they were surprisingly heavy. Then she muttered softly, "I know."

The cook squinted her eyes at Anning before saying, "Get moving. She’s already in a foul mood."

"Trust . She’s not in a foul mood." Anning said, with a forced smile on her lips.

"No?" The cook asked with a brow raised.

"No."

Anning turned and started walking toward the exit before saying, "Sothing just crawled up her ass. I wouldn’t call that being in a foul mood."

The cook gasped behind her while several servants nearby turned to stare at her like she had just grown a second head.

Anning imdiately regretted saying that out loud. But it was too late for her to be thinking that way.

She lowered her head and gradually increased her pace. With the trays in her hand, the kitchen felt even more crowded.

People bumped into her shoulder, soone elbowed her in the stomach, another servant nearly knocked one of the trays from her grip.

At that point, she couldn’t help but wonder if they were doing all this out of spite or even jealousy.

By the ti she finally reached the door she was exhausted.

’Thank heavens’ She thought, exhaling in relief.

She had just straightened up when the door suddenly swung open.

Bang!

The door in the kitchen was different from those used in the Gu family’s chambers. That resulted in the wooden door slamming directly into the tray.

Everything happened too fast that Anning could only watch in horror.

The trays fell out of her hand, bowls flew, food scattered everywhere. The sound of one of the ceramic plates shattering echoed through the kitchen.

Anning remained standing. Well it might look like she was standing but she was currently frozen from shock.

Sauce from one of the dishes dripped from the edge of her dress, sothing warm soaked her sleeve too.

Her nose throbbed painfully but she didn’t react. She simply stood there staring down at the disaster surrounding her.

After a few seconds, the panic finally hit her.

"Can’t you freaking see?" Anning found herself yelling without any form of restraint.

A petite girl with brown hair stood on the opposite side of the doorway. Her eyes widened so much they looked like they might actually fall out.

The girl stared down at the food on the floor. Then at Anning. Then back to the food before she imdiately bowed.

"I-i’m sorry!" The girl said, her voice coming out a tad bit soft and squeaky. "I didn’t know soone was stepping out of the kitchen, I’m so sorry."

Anning stared at her, then she suddenly rembered what wanqing did to her earlier. How she had blatantly ignored her apology and finally understood sothing.

Sorry doesn’t exactly fix anything.

With a strange expression on her face, she said, "You’re right."

"Excuse ?" The poor girl said, frowning at Anning.

"Sorry can’t make all this right. It can’t fix what just happened." The words slipped out before Anning could stop herself.

But her words weren’t for the girl, she was actually referring to them herself.

The girl’s face imdiately turned pale and before Anning knew it, she dropped to her knees. "I-I can help clean it up. We can even ask the cooks to prepare another al."

Anning pressed a hand over her forehead then said, "The food was for the young miss, Gu Wanqing. So you think she’s willing to wait?"

The girl’s face instantly turned pale. Around them, several maids gasped in surprise.

"Young Miss Wanqing?"

A maid nearby let out a snort, "The cooks won’t be able to remake all that quickly."

"Everyone knows she hates waiting."

The brown haired girl looked like she might burst into tears at any mont and Anning suddenly found herself feeling bad.

Honestly, today was already awful for her. She had no plans or reasons to make it worse.

"It’s fine." Anning said, then pointed to the ss. "Just get that cleaned up."

The girl’s eyes brightened as she nodded aggressively, her hair bouncing slightly.

Without saying anything else, Anning stepped over the food and the girl, before walking out of the kitchen.

But then she found herself imdiately walking into sothing solid.

Thud.

She took several steps backward, frowning. "What the—"

She looked up and found herself staring at an unfamiliar guard. He was huge, probably even larger than Han Luo.

He had broad shoulders and his entire body was covered in armor. To top that off, he had a face that mirrored his irritation.

"Watch where you’re going." He said in a gruff voice.

Anning pulled her gaze away from his face, allowing it to travel down his body. When her gaze landed on his chest, she was instantly reminded of a large brick wall.

"If you don’t want people bumping into you," She replied, brushing a spec of rice off her sleeve. "Maybe you could cut down on the whole workout thing?"

She then gestured toward his body, making the guard frown.

Her words only made the look on his face turn uglier.

"Step aside." The guard ordered but Anning didn’t even flinch. "Do you know a maid nad Lin Anning?"

The guard asked just as she opened her mouth to speak. Anning froze for a few seconds, the gears in her brain already moving faster than it ever had before.

Why was he looking for her? Co to think of it, who exactly was this man?

"What if he worked for the imperial princess?"

Was she about to get kidnapped?

No, absolutely not.

Anning instantly made a decision, a terrible one at that. The kind she always found herself making to avoid any form of drama.

"No, I haven’t heard of anyone bearing that na." She said, shrugging.

She smiled at the guard, turned around and started walking away.

Unfortunately, she had only taken three steps forward when a hand suddenly grabbed her wrist.

Anning bit on her lower lip in frustration, before slowly turning around.

The guard had stepped close enough that his armored chest was touching her back. His grip tightened slightly around her wrist, then he leaned down.

"I’d take it that you’re Anning?"
