Clyde glanced over. Micah sat on the couch, phone in hand, the light from the screen highlighted the frown on his face. His expression had turned solemn, the sparkle from earlier was gone. The corners of his mouth had flattened.

Clyde studied him for a mont longer, then quietly placed his laptop on the coffee table. He stood up and turned toward the kitchen.

"Do you want so sandwiches?" he asked, keeping his voice casual.

Micah blinked and looked up. His fingers loosened around the phone. "No. I ate too much..." he said, rubbing his stomach with his hand.

Clyde nodded thoughtfully. "What about dessert? I can make so egg custard."

"Really?" Micah’s eyes lit up. His phone slipped to the cushion beside him as he straightened his back.

Clyde’s lips curled slightly. "Yeah." He turned and walked into the kitchen.

Micah followed him with his eyes, arms loosely hugging a cushion now. He didn’t say anything, but there was a faint bounce to his knees, a small sign of his returning energy.

In the kitchen, Clyde pulled ingredients one by one, two eggs, one cup of warm milk, sugar and a vanilla bean pod. He moved with calm efficiently, sleeves rolled up neatly to his elbows. He grabbed a bowl and cracked the eggs in. Then he poured in the milk, added a spoonful of sugar, and scraped out the fragrant inside of the vanilla bean. He whisked it all together in a smooth rhythm.

Micah had gotten off the couch and was now leaning against the kitchen doorway, watching curiously. The way Clyde made it seed so easy. Maybe he could try to learn it?

Clyde finished whisking, then picked up a strainer and carefully poured the mixture through it into four little rakins. He covered them with cling wrap and placed them neatly into the stear basket. He put the lid on and started the tir.

Clyde turned to Micah. "It takes ten minutes to be ready. Want so tea while we wait?"

Micah jolted from his daze. "I’ll make it," he said, already reaching for the kettle.

Clyde leaned against the counter and watched the boy moving around the kitchen like he belonged there. Well, he didn’t mind it. Not one bit...

Micah placed the teapot on the table and sat down. He poured two cups and pushed one toward Clyde.

Clyde straightened his back and lifted the lid of the strear. Carefully, he used tongs to take out rakins, peeled off the cling wrap, and placed two of them on small plates. Then he handed one to Micah.

Micah took a small bite. The spoon clicked against the rakin as he scooped up a bit and slid it into his mouth. It was warm and slightly sweet. He began to eat it with more urgency, and his earlier depressed mode vanished completely.

Clyde watched, eyes soft. He didn’t know what to call it, but seeing Micah relaxed like this made him feel strongly at ease.

He put a spoon into his mouth. He never liked sweets. But right now, it didn’t seem so bad.

They ate in silence. Clyde sipped his tea, lost in thought. He was more certain now, there was sothing in Micah’s life weighing him down. A reason for the sudden shift in mood. Was it his family? Or this friend with a sick mother? Whatever the reason was, without it, Micah would probably be a carefree lively boy, grinning that smug smile and causing trouble everywhere. Honestly, Clyde preferred that version.

With the Du Pont family’s power in his hands, he could certainly erase any obstacle Micah was facing. At least until then, he could uphold his status as Patriarch of the family, and after that...

Clyde’s eyes turned empty.

*******

The next morning, Micah stood in the parking lot with a deep sigh. He stared at his car with a helpless look. He rubbed the back of his neck and turned to Clyde, who had just stepped out of the building. Clyde looked completely different now, dressed in a sleek black overcoat, crisp suit underneath, hair combed neatly.

Gone was the casual man from the kitchen last night. Micah sighed. He liked the other version better.

Clyde adjusted his tie when he noticed the boy was fidgeting. "What is it?"

"I’m late...it’s okay if my car stays here for now?" Micah said.

"Why? You don’t plan to use it to co over again, do you?" Clyde asked, raising an eyebrow.

"What? No...I just can’t park it at the dorm. There’s no parking spot there. I don’t want to leave it several blocks away. That’s if I can find a spot!"

"Alright. Get in. I’ll give you a ride." Clyde said flatly.

"Thanks!" Micah said and hopped into the car.

During the ride, Micah warned Clyde multiple tis. "Don’t forget the sketches. I gave them to you last night. Show them to Georgina. Okay?"

"I know." Clyde nodded. "That’s the fifth ti you’ve said that."

"Exactly. It’s that important." Micah huffed.

"Well, the person who is forgetful is not ." Clyde gave Micah a knowing look.

Micah turned his head away, avoiding his look.

Clyde’s lips stretched upward.

Just then, Micah sat up straighter. "Wait, pull over here! Let out."

Clyde signalled the driver.

"Thanks. I just don’t want anyone seeing get out of your car again. Another post and I’m dood," Micah said and got out of the car.

He began walking fast toward the university gates.

Clyde rubbed his forehead and motioned to drive to keep going.

Micah hadn’t gotten far when he heard soone yell his na.

"Micah!"

Micah flinched and turned around. Russell was jogging toward him, all cheerful energy, while next to him stood Archie, quiet and brooding, eyes locked on Micah like a hawk.

Micah’s heart sank. Shit! Did they see him get out of Clyde’s car?!

"Hey," Micah said, trying to act normal.

"Are you coming back from visiting your family?" Russell asked, a little out of breath.

Micah nodded vaguely. "Yeah."

"Ehh! So that blond man is your family?!" Russell blurted out.

Micah tripped on his own foot. Fuck! They saw.

Panic filled his face, but he quickly coughed and looked away. "Umm."

He couldn’t say no. If he denied it, then the rumour would get worse. Wouldn’t that an he was admitting Clyde was his boyfriend?

Archie stood silently, fists clenching at his sides. He watched every twitch of Micah’s face, every pause, every flicker in his eyes. He could see Micah’s dodging eyes when the blond man was brought up. There was sothing fishy there.

When Russell sent him the post, he had been stunned.

He never cared much about relationships before. All he cared about was his team and how they could get to the podium in the international competition. That was all that mattered.

But now, he felt like he had swallowed a fly. Thinking Micah, the silver-haired boy, belonging to soone else, smiling those bright hazel eyes to another man... he didn’t like it. At all.

Micah’s closeness to that black-haired boy seed like friendship... but this blond man...

His instinct said no. It was different. Micah’s reaction was off.

"Why didn’t your family do sothing about the gossip? You know it had gotten out of hand." Archie said.

Micah’s body stiffened. He clenched his fists in his pockets. First thing on Monday morning he had to run to the second male lead! Great!

He really wanted to snap at him but held back. Too much hostility would only backfire. Let’s send this giant twisted male lead away, the sooner, the better. He took a deep breath. "Well, I didn’t tell them. It will pass," he said waving a hand.

Just drop it and go away! Micah thought grimly.

Archie pressed his lips together. Micah wasn’t denying the gossip. Why not? Did that an he was really in a relationship?!

If that old man could have Micah, why couldn’t he? He and Micah had more in common. They could play gas together. Train together. Win competition together.

Archie’s eyes turned dark. He was not the type to sit back quietly. He would get what he wanted.
