After Russell’s incident, the rest of the military training passed by without any more drama. Just ten days of sweat, yelling and sunburn. But finally, it was over.

Micah stood in front of the mirror, lifting his shirt slightly to check his body. That nasty bruise on his abdon had faded completely, leaving just a faint shadow where it used to be. The burn scar on his hand had shrunk too, only a thin line now, and the knife wound on his upper arm no longer throbbed when he moved. All in all, he was healing up pretty well.

But what he couldn’t ignore was his skin. His face, neck, and arms were several shades darker than before. A deep tan had taken over, despite his applying sunscreen like a maniac every single day.

All that marching and standing in the sun had done its job. At least his skin had not been burned like when he was eight years old.

He squinted closer at his reflection, grimacing. "Ugh... I look like the lost sister of Asena, who was left behind in the desert!"

Micah didn’t care much about his looks. Not usually. But right now, all he could think about was that this tan might ruin his plan, disguising himself as a girl if the situation ever called for it. With this tan, there was no way he could pass for Asena or SugerFairyPlum. Not with all the girls in their freshman year, still pale and glowing like porcelain dolls.

He rembered how the girls had the advantage of using shades, how the instructor didn’t force them to march under the sun.

This was blatant discrimination!

"I hope Big sister won’t call until my tan fades!" Micah mumbled, his gaze drifting to the empty container on his desk.

He let out a dramatic sigh and pulled on his green hoodie. The sleeves felt a bit tight, maybe from all the push-ups he had done during training. He shoved his legs into a pair of worn jeans, yanked on his sneakers, and left the room.

Outside, Darcy was waiting.

"Hey, I told you not to wait for . Our departnts are in the opposite direction." Micah said as he approached.

Darcy looked over, walking beside him toward the cafeteria. "I know. But we can have breakfast together."

"Ha! Just say you want to monitor !" Micah snorted, rolling his eyes. "You’re afraid I’ll eat sothing oily or spicy! I am an adult, not a kid! I know how to take care of myself!"

"Two days ago, who was sneaking around to eat chips?" Darcy said, raising an eyebrow.

"That was not sneaking! I just went to check on Russell. It wasn’t my fault he offered chips! I was just being polite." Micah replied.

"Mmmm..." the corner of Darcy’s lips stretched upward in amusent. His eyes clearly said: I don’t buy that for a second.

Micah threw his hands up in the air. "I am telling the truth! Ah, where is Russell when I need him? He could vouch for !"

Micah looked around, searching for Russell in the cafeteria.

Before he could spot Russell, a sharp smack landed on his back. "Traitor!" Nick shouted. "Why didn’t you wake us up?! I didn’t even have ti to take a quick shower!"

Micah stumbled forward a bit. "I tried! You guys stayed up half the night, rember? I gave up after the third attempt! And besides, Darcy was already waiting ."

Emile stepped inside, rubbing his eyes. "I need coffee! I’m dying."

"You’ll have to buy it outside. The cafeteria doesn’t serve it anymore after training." Darcy replied flatly.

"Ah... everything has gone wrong today!" Emile said, holding his head.

Eddie returned with his tray full of food. "Why are you standing here? Good stuff is running out."

Micah quickly walked forward and ordered a bowl of porridge and two boiled eggs. With Darcy standing beside him, staring at him like a hawk, he couldn’t order anything else, even if he wanted.

He sat down and stuffed a spoonful of porridge into his mouth, asking Darcy. "Right, when do your classes end? Last night, we decided to go out to celebrate."

Darcy sipped his soup calmly. "At 2pm. But I have to et with my professor and tour the lab..."

"Fine, I get it. You are busy. Text when you’re done, and I’ll tell you where we are." Micah said.

"Shit, I am late!" Eddie said, suddenly jumped up and strode toward the door. "See ya."

Micah checked his watch. Fortunately, his departnt was nearby. But he finished his breakfast quickly, not wanting to delay soone sitting across from him.

"Slow down. I won’t be late." Darcy said.

"I always eat like that," Micah said with a straight face.

Darcy gave a quiet chuckle and stood. "Sure. Let’s go."

They walked together out of the cafeteria, and after one turn, they went in separate directions. Darcy headed off to the science wing, and Micah walked through a small garden toward the design departnt.

Micah quickly found his building. His first class was DesignFoundations, and he had heard that the dean personally taught this course.

He was excited. The dean, Georgina Malleti, was a fashion icon. Her designs had graced red carpets and magazine covers all over the world.

Micah quickened his steps and entered the class. So students looked familiar from their unit training, while others didn’t.

After a quick greeting, Micah sat down in the middle.

At first, no one sat beside him. But one by one, the seats around him filled up. People greeted him with smiles, and a few even asked about how he was feeling. Soone leaned over and joked about how he looked less scary now that he wasn’t glaring at the sun 24/7.

Micah blinked and just offered so nods and smiles. It didn’t occur to him that these people liked him. Not out of politeness or formality, but because they actually wanted to talk to him. (or because the power of plot was decreasing? Not that Micah realised it.)

He wasn’t used to that.

Growing up surrounded by power, money, and fake smiles had taught him to expect the worst from people. That if soone ca close, it was usually for a reason. Like Evan, Jullian and others. So when people sat near him, he figured it was just because the room was filling up.

Then a voice ca. "Micah Ramsy! You jerk! You didn’t wait for !" Russell shouted in the class.

Micah flinched so hard his pen nearly flew out of his hand. He turned toward the voice, eyes wide. "What? When did you say that? Wait, hold on! Are you also a fashion design major?!"

Russell stord in, waving off the person beside Micah with zero sha, and plopped into the seat. "Duh! I told you that in the dorm! I knew you weren’t listening!!"

Russell had long been used to seeing people flocking toward Micah like bees to a flower these past days. He had learned to be pushy; otherwise, he couldn’t even get a glimpse of Micah, let alone talk to him.

Micah rubbed the back of his neck. "Sorry... I think I was distracted."

By ’distracted’, he ant focused entirely on that forbidden bag of chips Russell had offered him that night. He had nodded and smiled at everything Russell said just to get that salty reward.
