Ty fell through cold paperwork.

Forms snapped past him in the dark: intake, property, consent, specin, transfer, witness. Each one tried to catch on his bones. Each one tore when blue fire touched it.

He landed on tile.

The others hit around him in ugly pieces of sound. Yun-Jin rolled and ca up with her sword already raised. JJ landed on her side, cursed into the floor, then slapped her panel until it brightened. Omina landed on one knee with her cuffs pressed to the tile. Heissman arrived last, flat on his back, staring at the ceiling like it had personally disappointed him.

"I prefer stairs," he said.

JJ groaned. "You prefer complaining."

"Also true."

They were back in the freezer corridor, but B-3 had changed.

The drawer stood open all the way now. The empty tray held the specin cup, Mara's cancelled copy, Jade's contested statent, and the black gap mark burned into the steel under all of it.

Omina pushed herself up.

"Do not touch the mark."

Ty had already stopped.

The missing finger sat in his palm, no longer scratching. It pointed at the black circle without moving, the way a wound pointed at the knife.

The freezer speaker crackled.

This ti, the voice was not hospital-flat.

It was pleasant.

Familiar.

Wrong because it sounded almost kind.

"Human institutions are so fragile," Erebos said. "You do not need to break them. You wait beside them with a pen."

JJ's face went white with anger. "Oh, I hate him."

Heissman sat up slowly. "The worst part is that he makes accurate statents before committing moral cris."

Ty stared at the speaker.

"Show yourself."

"I am showing you the part that matters."

The black mark ward.

The scene appeared above the open drawer.

rcy General, years ago.

Jade stood in a hallway with rain in her hair and blood on her sleeve. Younger. Smaller than Ty rembered because grief had made her hold herself upright with effort instead of strength. Rose Vale passed behind her with a chart. At the records counter, Mara Whitlock argued with a man whose face the mory refused to keep.

E. Ross signed the visitor log.

The mory refused to show Erebos's face.

That made it worse.

Mara said, "This is not enough consent."

The man beside her replied, "It is enough for a clerk who wants the shift to end."

Mara stayed planted.

The mory skipped.

Jade signed a property release with a hand that could barely hold the pen.

The mory skipped again.

The signature copied itself onto a second form.

Then Erebos's mark appeared beside the copied field, dark and small, like a witness who had arrived without knocking.

Ty watched the mark enter the gap between human failure and route law.

Omina spoke first.

"He ca after the copied consent."

"No," Heissman said. "He certified its usefulness."

JJ looked sick. "That is supposed to be better?"

"It is legally different and emotionally disgusting."

The mory froze on the copied signature.

Erebos's voice ca again.

"People always want gods to be the source of their cruelty. It flatters them. It makes repair theatrical. In truth, I often find the work already done."

Ty's fingers closed around the missing bone.

"You used it."

"Yes."

"You used Jade."

"I used a signature field attached to grief. That is more precise."

Ty lifted his sickle.

The freezer lights dimd.

"Precision will not save you," Ty said.

Erebos gave a soft laugh through the speaker. "No. But it may save the record from your anger."

On JJ's panel, Jade's connection flashed.

The screen split.

Jade's face appeared, pale under shelter lights, mouth set hard. Mara stood beside her with the cancelled form held in both hands. Rose Vale was behind them. Waddell hovered at the edge of fra like a man trying to be useful without breathing too loud.

Jade's hearing still failed the room. Ty saw that before anyone said it. She watched captions and faces, not sound.

That made what ca next harder.

Erebos's mark brightened.

The freezer printed:

CONSENT SOURCE: JADE

GAP WITNESS: E. ROSS

REMOVAL TRANSFER: VALID

Ty saw Jade read it.

Jade held steady.

She picked up Waddell's pad and wrote.

COPIED GRIEF IS NOT CONSENT.

Mara read the line on her side. Her mouth trembled once, then steadied.

She held up her cancelled form.

"Contact signature copied from property release," she said. "Insufficient for tissue removal. Requires nad witness."

Rose stepped closer.

"I witnessed Mara refuse it."

Waddell, after one frantic second of looking for permission from nobody useful, leaned into fra.

"Earth field office records Jade's statent, Mara's cancelled form, and Rose Vale's witness as active challenge to copied consent."

Caelin's voice ca from off-screen, caught by captions.

"Director's office accepts challenge pending full review."

Heissman whispered, "The phrase pending full review has never sounded so romantic."

JJ almost laughed. It broke before it beca sound.

Ty looked at Jade through the panel.

She lifted the pad again.

I GAVE TY AWAY TO NO ONE.

The freezer paper shook hard enough to rattle the open drawer.

Erebos's mark stayed on the page. Innocence had never been part of its defense.

But the mark changed category.

GAP WITNESS: UNDISCLOSED HIGHER INTEREST

TRANSFER VALID beca TRANSFER CONTESTED.

REMOVAL OWNERSHIP beca REMOVAL UNDER REVIEW.

SPECIN STATUS beca ACTIVE ABSENCE WITNESS.

JJ read the last line. "Active absence witness. That is horrifyingly bureaucratic and sohow good."

Omina's cuffs brightened. "It ans the missing piece can testify by refusing placent."

Yun-Jin gave the specin cup a narrow look. "So the finger staying missing matters."

Ty opened his hand.

The bone lay against his palm, curved toward the empty joint.

It wanted ho.

He wanted it ho.

The freezer wanted that want on record.

Ty understood the next trap before it printed.

If he reattached it now, Zunoder could argue the specin returned to the body dispute. If he left it separate, the absence stayed a witness. A small piece of him had to remain unrestored because the truth needed the wound visible.

Jade watched him through the panel.

Her expression changed.

She understood too.

She wrote slowly this ti.

DO NOT FIX IT WRONG.

Ty looked at the missing joint.

The ache there was not physical. Physical would have been easier.

"I know."

JJ's voice softened. "Ty..."

"I know."

He placed the finger beside the empty cup instead of against his hand.

Blue fire coiled between bone and cup. The space between them beca a line on the record.

ACTIVE ABSENCE WITNESS: PRESERVED.

The freezer corridor exhaled.

Drawer B-3 shut halfway, then stopped. The black gap mark remained visible under the folder, but it no longer sat on top of the consent field. It had been pushed to the margin.

Erebos humd through the speaker.

"Good. You are learning to leave useful pain alone."

Ty's sickle snapped into his hand.

"Keep talking."

"No. That would beco indulgent."

The speaker clicked.

For a few breaths, only the freezer ran.

Then the wall behind B-3 printed a new line in gray.

FIRST REMOVAL: TISSUE.

STATUS: CONTESTED.

The words waited until everyone had read them.

Then another line appeared.

SECOND REMOVAL: MORY.

STATUS: UNCONTESTED.

JJ's panel went cold in her hands.

Yun-Jin swore under her breath.

Heissman stood too quickly and nearly lost balance. "mory of what?"

The freezer answered by opening the drawer above B-3.

Inside sat a visitor badge, old and cracked.

MARA WHITLOCK - TEMPORARY ESCORT

Behind the badge lay a child's plastic bracelet from rcy General pediatrics. Pink. Small. Still carrying a printed na.

KIERAN STAHL.

Jade's screen froze.

For one second, even the captions stopped.

Then Mara Whitlock, on the shelter side, made a sound so raw the tablet failed to translate it.

Ty looked from the bracelet to Jade.

Jade's face had gone still in the way people went still when the floor they trusted beca water.

Mara whispered, readable even through the bad feed.

"I forgot the child."

The freezer printed one final line.

SECOND WITNESS LOCATED.

Sowhere beyond the morgue walls, Zunoder began laughing again.
